Before buying a Fitbit, confirm your phone can run the Google Health app, check whether you need its paid Premium features, and make sure your Fitbit history is accessible under the Google Account you plan to use. As of October 7, 2026, Fitbit account sign-in has ended and Google’s July 15 data-deletion date has passed, so anyone with an unmigrated account should check their access promptly rather than assume their old data is still available.
Will a Fitbit work with your phone?
Google’s current Google Health app requirements are Android 11 or later, or iOS 16.4 or later. Those minimums are necessary, but they do not guarantee that every handset will work properly. Google specifically warns that the Huawei P8 Lite, Huawei P9 Lite, Xiaomi Mi 6, and Huawei P20 Lite may have compatibility issues even when they meet the operating-system requirement. This is not a complete list of unsupported phones. Check Google’s current device and app requirements for your exact model before buying, particularly if your phone is older.

Check the phone and setup requirements
- Confirm the phone meets the current Android or iOS minimum and can install the Google Health app.
- Check the handset model itself against Google’s compatibility notes; meeting the OS floor alone is not enough.
- Make sure Bluetooth and the app permissions needed for pairing are available. On Android, setup may also require location services and related permissions.
- If automatic syncing or phone notifications matter to you, review Android battery, background-activity, data-use, and permission settings. Restrictions can interfere with syncing or notifications.
Google says current Fitbit devices require an iPhone or Android phone, and initial setup is completed in the Google Health app—not from the phone’s Bluetooth settings screen. Follow the app’s pairing prompts and Google’s setup instructions.

What app and account do you need now?
Google says the Fitbit app became Google Health on May 19, 2026. Fitbit account sign-in ended on that date; a Google Account is now required to use Google Health. If you are buying a Fitbit for the first time, plan to set it up with the Google Account you intend to keep using. See Google’s account and app requirements.

Will you lose your old Fitbit data?
Fitbit history is tied to the account, not simply stored on the old phone. Google’s migration instructions say users can review which Fitbit data and setup information to move, and keep the historical data they choose to move. The move cannot be undone: Google states, “Once you move Fitbit to your Google Account, you can not undo this action.” Review the choices carefully before confirming the transfer. Google’s Fitbit-to-Google Account migration instructions explain the process.
If you have not moved your Fitbit account
Google said users could download or delete their data before it began processing data deletions on July 15, 2026. That date has passed. The available guidance does not establish that every account that was not moved still has recoverable data. Check whether you can access Google Health with your Google Account and contact current Google support promptly if your history is missing or you cannot sign in. Do not assume an old Fitbit login still works.

If you are changing phones
After your data is available in Google Health, Google says to install the app on the new phone, sign in with the same Google Account, and follow the pairing and permission prompts. Google explains, “Your data in Google Health is stored in the cloud, so it’s automatically backed up.” That covers account data; it is not a promise that every device setting, connected app, or third-party record will transfer exactly. See Google’s instructions for using Google Health on a new phone.

Google says users can export account data, including categories such as activities, body, food, and sleep, through Google Account data and privacy settings. Google Health also documents connections through Health Connect, Apple Health, and direct third-party services. A connection does not guarantee that every partner supports every data type or that older records transfer seamlessly. Google notes that some partners using the Fitbit Web API need to update or reconnect; check the third-party app connection guidance for your specific service.

Do you need Fitbit Premium?
Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium on May 19, 2026. Google describes paid benefits such as Google Health Coach, personalized recommendations, workouts, and wellness content; some features require Premium. Whether the subscription is useful depends on whether you want those features, rather than on whether the tracker itself can record basic activity. Google says eligibility can depend on being over 18, having a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, living in a supported country, and having a compatible phone with internet access. Review Google’s Premium feature and eligibility information before counting a particular feature as included.
Some new or returning Google Account users may be offered a three-month trial after updating, but the offer is not guaranteed for every buyer or device. The official help information reviewed does not establish one universal current subscription price. At checkout, check the price for your region, trial end date, renewal schedule, and billing provider. Google says you can cancel a subscription and retain access through the current billing period; uninstalling the app does not cancel it. See Google Health Premium subscription details.
