A large discount is only a good deal when the exact item is genuine, fits your needs, and still represents good value after shipping, taxes, return costs and risk. Before paying, match the product and variant across sellers, verify who is responsible for the listing, read reviews for the same version, check the sale-specific return terms, confirm delivery promises, and save every record. Use a payment method with dispute protections where available.
The checks below apply to clothing, shoes, accessories, beauty products, homeware and other lifestyle goods sold during flash sales, clearance events and seasonal promotions. Consumer rights, delivery rules and payment remedies depend on your country, the seller’s location and the payment method.

- Calculate the all-in price: item price plus delivery, handling, taxes, duties and any mandatory fees.
- Check the seller: legal or trading name, contact details, policies, marketplace status and authenticity evidence.
- Read the right reviews: reviews for the same product and variant, from more than one source, with concrete comments.
- Read returns and delivery terms: deadline, costs, exclusions, remedy and promised arrival date.
- Pay and preserve evidence: use a safer payment method, save the offer and keep order, payment and communication records.
Do not treat a large percentage-off label as proof of a bargain. A claimed “was” price may not reflect a verified historic selling price, and a lower headline price can disappear after fees or an expensive return.

1. Compare the real offer, not just the discount badge
Match the exact item and variant
Open the product details on each seller’s site and confirm that you are comparing the same model or product code. For fashion, match size, colour, fabric, cut and collection. For accessories or home goods, check dimensions, materials, included parts and whether the listing is for one item or a set. A similar photograph can hide a different version, capacity or condition.
Record whether each offer is for a new, used, refurbished, vintage, open-box, “as is” or close-out item. A clearance listing may have different defects, packaging or warranty terms from the full-price version.
Work out the all-in total
Put every unavoidable charge into one comparison. Include standard or expedited delivery, handling, sales tax, VAT, customs or import duty, service fees and any required membership. Check whether the displayed price applies only after a code, minimum spend or automatic subscription.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s online-shopping guidance advises checking more than one retailer because prices can change during major sales. Comparison sites can help locate alternatives, but rankings may be affected by paid placement. Read how a comparison service orders results and verify the final price and terms on the retailer’s own page. The CMA also recommends checking AI-generated comparisons against the retailer’s current information.
Why a “70% off” claim is not enough
There is no universal test in the available official guidance that proves a displayed “was” price is a genuine saving for every product. A percentage discount can be calculated from a short-lived or rarely used reference price. Treat it as a marketing claim until you have compared the same item’s current prices and the total cost elsewhere.
Be especially cautious when an expensive branded product appears at an implausibly low price. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that a bargain-priced brand-name product could be counterfeit or stolen. A low price is a reason to investigate authenticity and the seller, not a reason to skip those checks.
2. Verify the seller and the listing
Find out who is actually selling
On a marketplace, the platform may host the page while an independent business fulfils the order. Look for the seller’s trading name, physical or mailing address, customer-service email, telephone number and country. Open the seller profile and read its terms rather than assuming the marketplace’s reputation covers every listing.
The FTC’s marketplace guidance recommends checking contact information, shipping fees, return rules and the marketplace’s refund process. Platform protections, claim deadlines and eligibility can differ by seller, product category and payment route.

Test whether the information is usable
Ask a written question when an answer affects your decision—for example, whether a jacket is unworn, whether a watch includes its original parts, or whether a cosmetic item is sealed. Keep the response. A seller who will not answer basic questions, gives contradictory details or pushes you to pay outside the platform creates avoidable risk.
For a seller you have never used, search the name together with words such as “review,” “complaint” or “scam.” Check several independent results and the dates. A listing on a well-known marketplace does not itself verify the seller, authenticity, condition or buyer protection for that particular transaction.
Inspect photos and descriptions
- Determine whether photos show the actual item or generic stock images.
- Look for close-ups of labels, serial or model numbers, fabric, stitching, seals, soles and damage where relevant.
- Read the entire description for words such as “inspired,” “replica,” “grade,” “as is,” “minor flaw” or “no returns.”
- Confirm what is included: boxes, straps, chargers, spare parts, certificates or matching pieces.
- Check that the size chart belongs to this item, not merely to the seller’s general catalogue.
Save screenshots or a PDF of the listing before checkout. Sale pages can change after an order, and the original wording may be important if the item differs from the description.
3. Read reviews as evidence, not as a score
Start with the same product and variant
Filter reviews to the exact model, colour and size when the site allows it. A review for a different fabric, generation or seller may say little about the item in your basket. For clothing, comments about sleeve length, stretch, opacity, shrinkage and fit are more useful than a single star rating. For shoes, look for width, break-in time and sole wear; for beauty or household products, note batch, formulation or capacity differences.
Look for concrete, repeatable details
Prioritise reviews that explain what was measured or observed: a person’s height and usual size, garment measurements, material feel, packaging condition, delivery date or a specific defect. Several independent comments describing the same issue are more informative than hundreds of one-line ratings.
Read reviews on multiple sites and consider the reviewer’s history. The FTC warns that ratings and reviews can be fake or misleading, and it may not be obvious when a reviewer received an incentive. Treat badges such as “verified” as one signal, not proof that every statement is independent or that the item is authentic.
Watch for patterns that distort the average
- A sudden cluster of five-star posts with similar wording or no product detail.
- Reviews that clearly describe another item, colour, size or an earlier version.
- Complaints about the seller’s service mixed with praise for a product bought elsewhere.
- Ratings that changed sharply after a listing was merged with other products.
- Photos that do not match the current design, packaging or specifications.
Use the review record to identify questions to ask the seller, not to outsource the decision to an aggregate number.

Read the product-specific terms
Open the return or refund policy linked to the sale listing, not only the site-wide policy. Confirm:

- the number of days to request a return and whether the clock starts at purchase or delivery;
- whether clearance, outlet, personalised, hygiene-sensitive or opened items are excluded;
- who pays return postage and whether an international return is required;
- whether a restocking, handling or label fee is deducted;
- the condition required, including tags, packaging and protective seals;
- whether the remedy is a refund, exchange, credit or repair;
- how long the seller takes to issue a refund after receiving the parcel.
Save the policy with the offer. A return promise made in a chat or email should be retained alongside the order confirmation.
Separate voluntary policies from legal rights
Sellers may choose shorter or stricter policies for sale and clearance goods, but a voluntary “change of mind” policy is not the same as statutory rights. Your legal protections depend on where you live, where the seller is established and the type of product.
For UK shoppers, government guidance states: “Customers have exactly the same rights to refunds when they buy items in a sale as when they buy them at full price.” The UK page also explains that online cancellation rights can apply, subject to conditions and exceptions. Read the current UK Government returns guidance for the product and transaction you are considering. Do not apply that UK rule automatically in another country.
Calculate the cost of a wrong fit
For clothing or shoes, estimate the downside if the item does not fit: outbound postage, return postage, customs, a non-refundable fee and the time needed to repackage it. A slightly higher price from a seller with a free, practical return route may be cheaper overall than the lowest headline offer.
5. Confirm shipping, stock and delivery promises
Distinguish dispatch from arrival
“Ships in three days” usually describes when the seller hands the parcel to a carrier, not when it reaches you. Check processing time, carrier service, estimated arrival window, tracking, weekend or holiday exclusions and the destination country. During a major sale, inventory can be allocated after payment, so note whether the item is genuinely in stock or marked as a preorder.
The FTC’s online-shopping guidance says a seller must ship as promised in its advertising. If no shipping time is promised, the FTC rule described there requires shipment within 30 days after the seller receives the order information and payment or authorization. This is US guidance, not a worldwide delivery deadline.
Save the evidence that fixes the promise
Keep the product page, delivery estimate, order confirmation, receipt, tracking history, return policy and all messages. Record the time zone if a countdown timer or promotion end time matters. If the seller changes the delivery date, save that notice rather than relying on memory.

6. Choose a safer payment method and protect your data
Use payment with a realistic dispute route
For US shoppers, the FTC generally favors credit cards where possible because they offer legal protections and may allow a charge dispute when goods do not arrive or are not as described. Actual remedies depend on the issuer, the transaction and the circumstances. Read your card issuer’s dispute deadline and follow its instructions.

Do not buy from a seller that insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or a payment app when those methods remove normal purchase protections. A request to move payment outside the marketplace is a major warning sign. Never share a one-time passcode or approve an unexpected payment request.
Review app permissions
Shopping apps may collect contact and purchase information and may use location data. Before installing one, read its privacy information and check device permissions. Disable location, contacts or notification access that the app does not need for the transaction. Use a unique password and multi-factor authentication for the shopping account, especially if it stores payment details.
7. Use a side-by-side decision sheet
When two offers look similar, fill in the same fields for both. This prevents a low item price from dominating your decision.

Choose the offer that best balances these factors. If a critical cell is unknown—such as who pays international return postage—ask before ordering or treat the uncertainty as a cost.

Measure against the listing
Use a flexible sewing measuring tape to compare your body or a well-fitting garment with the seller’s size chart. Measure at the points the chart specifies and note whether measurements are body dimensions or finished-garment dimensions. This reduces guesswork but cannot guarantee fit because fabric stretch, cut, posture and personal preference vary.
Check materials and care
Read the fibre composition, lining, transparency, stretch percentage and care instructions. A very low price may reflect a thinner fabric, missing lining, factory seconds or a colour that differs from the screen. For cosmetics, skincare and other products applied to the body, check the seal, ingredients, expiry or batch information and any allergy-relevant warnings.
Inspect condition on arrival
Photograph the unopened parcel and the item before removing tags. Check seams, stains, odour, scratches, missing components, labels and the actual colour in daylight. If there is a defect or the item is materially different, contact the seller through the official channel promptly and keep the packaging until the dispute is resolved.

- The seller has no usable contact details or refuses written answers.
- The item is dramatically cheaper than comparable offers with no credible explanation.
- Photos, specifications and condition statements conflict.
- The listing uses only stock images for a supposedly unique or high-value item.
- Reviews appear copied, concern a different product or are overwhelmingly vague.
- Returns are excluded but the seller will not explain defects, sizing or condition.
- The delivery promise is missing, contradictory or changes at checkout.
- You are pressured to pay by gift card, wire, cryptocurrency or an off-platform link.
- A countdown, low-stock message or coupon is used to stop you from checking terms.
Any one signal may have an innocent explanation; several together make the apparent saving less important than the risk.

10. If the order goes wrong
Document first
Save the listing, receipt, payment confirmation, tracking page, photographs and messages. Write a short timeline with the order date, promised delivery, actual events and what you are requesting.
Contact the correct party
Use the seller’s official support channel and, on a marketplace, open the platform’s formal claim before its deadline. State whether the item never arrived, arrived damaged, differs from the description or is counterfeit, and request the remedy allowed by the policy or law. Keep communication factual and do not close a claim until the refund or replacement is confirmed.
Escalate through payment protections
If a US credit-card purchase does not arrive, FTC guidance says you can dispute the charge. Follow your issuer’s time limits and provide the saved evidence. Other payment methods and countries have different procedures, so check the provider’s terms and local consumer agency rather than assuming the same remedy applies.
The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to it in 2022, according to its 2023 consumer alert at Shopping online? Here’s what to do when things go wrong. That is a historical 2022 count, not a current rate or percentage, but it illustrates why records and payment choice matter.
11. Match the advice to your jurisdiction
Before relying on a deadline, refund rule or dispute right, identify:
- your country or state and the seller’s business location;
- whether the seller is a business or a private individual;
- the product category and any hygiene, personalised or digital-content exception;
- the payment method and its claim deadline;
- whether the marketplace offers an additional guarantee and its eligibility rules.
The FTC pages linked above describe US consumer guidance. The CMA article and UK Government returns page describe UK information. They are useful reference points, not a single worldwide rulebook.
A practical go/no-go rule
Buy only when you can identify the exact item, explain the all-in price, contact the responsible seller, find credible evidence about condition and authenticity, understand the return route, and see a plausible delivery promise. If one of those facts is material and cannot be confirmed, the discount is not yet a demonstrated saving. Save the offer and payment records before you place the order; they are part of the protection you are buying with the product.
