The reviewed manufacturer documentation supports two adjacent examples rather than a confirmed product category: Adafruit’s MacroPad RP2040 Starter Kit combines twelve mechanical switch sockets, a monochrome OLED and an 8 mm sounder; Trash Amps’ DIY Speaker Kit v4 is an audio project with a 2-inch full-range driver and 2.4 W amplifier. The EVO70 R2 is a display-equipped keyboard kit, but its documentation does not establish speaker hardware. Use the checks below to separate these use cases.

Start by identifying the product’s main job
“Speaker” can mean either a listening speaker or a small transducer used for interface feedback. Those are not interchangeable. A listening speaker is designed to reproduce music or instrument audio through a driver and amplifier. A feedback sounder produces beeps, alerts and simple tones while a controller performs another job.

Adafruit describes the MacroPad RP2040 Starter Kit as a programmable keyboard controller. It has twelve sockets for mechanical switches, a 128×64 SH1106 monochrome OLED, an encoder and an 8 mm speaker/buzzer driven by a Class D amplifier with an RC filter. That output is documented for beeps and sound effects. It should not be evaluated as a full-range music speaker simply because the product page uses the word “speaker.”

DIY audio speaker
Trash Amps’ DIY Speaker Kit v4 is built around a 2-inch full-range driver and a 2.4 W amplifier. Its listed features include 3.5 mm connections, a stated 140 to 20 kHz frequency range, a guitar mode and daisy-chain connections. The maker’s page does not document a display or mechanical keyboard keys. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent listening-test results.
Display keyboard kit
The EVO70 R2 documentation describes a keyboard kit with Kailh hot-swap sockets and a choice of a 0.91-inch 128×32 monochrome OLED or a 0.96-inch 160×80 color LCD. The listing does not establish a speaker or buzzer. Treat it as a keyboard/display project unless the exact revision’s bill of materials says otherwise.
The sources reviewed do not establish a single, standard product category that combines a full-range speaker, display and mechanical keys. A product may exist elsewhere, but you should verify the exact model rather than assume that one feature implies the others.

What the MacroPad starter kit lists
- The controller board.
- Twelve Kailh linear red mechanical switches.
- Twelve MX-compatible clear keycaps.
- An enclosure and hardware.
- The OLED, rotary encoder and buzzer.
Its sockets accept compatible switches by snapping them into place, so switch installation is described as solder-free. That statement applies to installing switches in the provided sockets; it does not promise that every modification, repair or accessory will avoid soldering.
What the EVO70 R2 listing excludes
- Mechanical switches.
- Stabilizers.
- Keycaps.
- A USB-C cable.
Those omissions can change the real cost substantially. Confirm whether the selected display is the monochrome OLED or color LCD version and whether the case, plate, controller and mounting hardware are included in that particular configuration.
What the Trash Amps kit lists and omits
The listed kit contents include the speaker driver, PCB, battery holder, hardware and other project parts. The maker explicitly says batteries and assembly tools are not included. Plan for three AAA batteries and for the tools listed in the assembly instructions.
Turn the listing into a purchase worksheet
- Copy every included component into one column.
- Copy every exclusion and “required separately” item into a second column.
- Add quantities: one missing stabilizer set or twelve missing switches can be more important than a small price difference.
- Check the exact revision, color and display option; photographs may show parts from a different configuration.
- Price the complete working build, including power, cable, batteries, tools and replacement parts.
Evaluate sound hardware instead of the word “speaker”
Questions for a listening speaker
- What is the driver size and type?
- What amplifier power is specified, and under what conditions?
- Is a frequency response or range provided?
- Which inputs are supported?
- What is the power source and expected battery arrangement?
- Are the figures manufacturer claims or independent measurements?
For the Trash Amps kit, the documented answers are a 2-inch full-range driver, 2.4 W amplifier, stated 140–20 kHz range, 3.5 mm connections and three AAA batteries. The same page describes guitar mode and daisy-chain connections. The figures come from the maker’s product page; no independent acoustic test is supplied.
Questions for a feedback sounder
For a macropad, ask what the sounder is intended to do rather than expecting a frequency-response chart. The MacroPad’s 8 mm component is described as a speaker/buzzer for simple beeps and sound effects. Its Class D amplifier and RC filter support that interface role. There is no basis in the cited documentation for treating it as a small hi-fi speaker.

Do not infer missing audio features
If a keyboard listing does not state a driver, amplifier, input jack or power arrangement, mark each item “not stated.” Do not infer audio playback from a product photograph, a grille-shaped opening or a microcontroller board. Ask the seller for a schematic or bill of materials before buying.
Check assembly difficulty and tools
Solder-required audio build
Trash Amps describes its project as requiring soldering and simple assembly. The maker’s tool and supply list includes a fine-tip electronics soldering iron, solder, a Phillips screwdriver, three AAA batteries and wire clippers or scissors. The stated build estimate is approximately 45 minutes for beginners and 10 minutes for experienced builders. Those are the manufacturer’s estimates, not independently measured times.
- Read the assembly instructions before opening the kit and identify polarity marks on the battery holder and board.
- Confirm that your soldering iron has a fine tip and that you have suitable electronics solder.
- Sort hardware and wires before soldering; photograph the layout if the instructions show multiple similar leads.
- Inspect every joint for bridges, cold solder or an untrimmed wire strand.
- Install batteries only after checking polarity and completing a continuity inspection.
- Test at low volume first, then verify the input, guitar mode and any daisy-chain connection.
Socketed switch installation
The MacroPad documentation says compatible switches snap into sockets without soldering. This is a useful distinction for beginners who want mechanical keys but do not want to solder twelve switch connections. You may still need soldering equipment for a damaged socket, an undocumented modification or an add-on that is not part of the starter kit.
Keyboard-kit assembly
For the EVO70, the absence of switches, stabilizers, keycaps and a USB-C cable means assembly starts with parts selection. Confirm switch orientation, stabilizer type and plate compatibility before ordering. A display choice also affects firmware and enclosure fit, so do not buy the screen separately until the revision documentation confirms the connector and mounting dimensions.
Verify what the display can actually do
MacroPad OLED and firmware
“Includes an OLED” describes hardware, not automatic software support. Adafruit states that early QMK support for the board does not include the OLED. The documented development paths are Arduino or CircuitPython. If your goal is a live key legend, meter or status screen, confirm that the example code and library for your chosen environment expose the display before purchase.

EVO70 display options
The EVO70 offers either a 0.91-inch 128×32 monochrome OLED or a 0.96-inch 160×80 color LCD. The display choice is therefore a real configuration decision, not merely a cosmetic option.
customMK notes that the EVO70’s QMK firmware does not yet support dynamic LCD image loading over USB, memory-card access or onboard flash access. Custom graphics currently require compiling new firmware. If you need to change images frequently without rebuilding firmware, this limitation rules out that workflow unless a later firmware release changes it.
Questions to ask before ordering
- Which firmware environments support the display in the exact revision?
- Can the firmware update images at runtime, or only after recompilation?
- Is the display monochrome or color, and what are its resolution and dimensions?
- Are example projects supplied for the screen, encoder and keys?
- Does the display consume a port or memory resource needed by another accessory?
Check power, inputs and physical compatibility
Power and connectors determine whether a kit works on your desk, in a portable enclosure or as an instrument accessory. The Trash Amps documentation specifies three AAA batteries and 3.5 mm connections. Confirm whether batteries are sold separately in your region and whether the intended source uses the same connector.
The EVO70 listing excludes its USB-C cable, so include a known-good data cable in the build plan; a charge-only cable may not support firmware flashing. For any product whose power input is not clearly stated, ask for voltage, current and polarity information rather than guessing from a similar board.
For mechanical keys, verify switch format, socket type, keycap profile and stabilizer spacing. “MX-compatible” does not guarantee that every low-profile, optical or nonstandard switch will fit. Match the exact socket and plate information in the revision documentation.

Calculate total cost and availability at checkout
No reliable universal price can be assigned from the cited pages because configurations and stock change. Build a total-cost line item for the kit, missing parts, shipping, tax, batteries, cable and tools. A cheaper bare keyboard kit can cost more after adding switches, stabilizers, keycaps and a cable; a solder-required speaker kit can require a tool purchase before assembly.
Availability also needs a final check. The Adafruit MacroPad starter-kit page showed the kit out of stock when checked in 2026, and the Trash Amps kit page showed sold out at that time. Stock status is temporary, so confirm the current manufacturer listing, expected restock information and whether the displayed revision is still supported.
Use this decision framework before choosing
| Your priority | Evidence to require | Reject the listing when |
|---|---|---|
| Music, podcasts or guitar | Driver size, amplifier rating, input type, power source and frequency information | It only lists an 8 mm buzzer or gives no audio path |
| Programmable keys with audible feedback | Switch socket type, firmware examples and sounder control | The “speaker” is the only evidence and firmware cannot address it |
| Live status or graphics | Display resolution, connector, supported firmware and update method | Images require an impractical rebuild for your intended workflow |
| No-solder beginner build | Hot-swap sockets, preassembled boards and an explicit tool list | The instructions require soldering or omit required tools |
| Portable operation | Battery type, holder, runtime information and enclosure clearance | Power requirements or battery exclusion are unclear |
Common buying mistakes and how to prevent them
Mistaking a buzzer for a speaker system
Read the intended-use sentence beside the component name. “Beep,” “feedback” and “sound effects” indicate an interface sounder. Look for driver, amplifier, input and power specifications before expecting music playback.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Assuming the photograph shows the shipped kit
Photographs often show a fully assembled sample. Compare every visible switch, keycap, cable, battery and tool against the written contents. For the EVO70, several prominent keyboard parts are explicitly excluded.
Assuming a display is fully supported
Check firmware notes, not just the screen resolution. The MacroPad’s early QMK path omits OLED support, while the EVO70’s QMK implementation lacks dynamic image loading, memory-card access and onboard-flash access.
Ignoring stock and revision changes
Record the exact product revision and check availability immediately before payment. An out-of-stock or sold-out page may later return with a different bundle, display option or firmware status.
Budgeting only the kit price
Add every excluded item and consumable. For a soldered audio project, include the iron, solder, screwdriver, wire cutters and batteries. For the EVO70, include switches, stabilizers, keycaps and a USB-C cable.
