A low price is a good deal only when the exact device, its condition, seller, protections, support life and likely repair cost all make sense together. Before paying, calculate the delivered cost, verify who is responsible for the sale, get the condition and warranty in writing, confirm the return deadline, and check software-update and parts support for that specific model.
The consumer guidance linked in this article is primarily from US agencies. Return rights, warranty transfer, refurbished definitions, taxes and payment remedies can differ by country, state, marketplace and seller, so confirm the terms that apply to your location.

1. Calculate the real price, not the advertised percentage
A “50% off” label says nothing about whether the offer is cheaper than a comparable, fully supported device. Start with the exact model number and configuration, then calculate what you will actually pay and what you must keep paying.
Identify the exact product
- Record the manufacturer model number, storage capacity, memory, processor, radio or cellular version, color and included accessories.
- Check whether the listing is for a single unit, an open-box return, a bundle, a carrier-locked version or a device that requires activation.
- Compare like-for-like specifications with other offers. A lower price for less storage, a regional variant or a missing charger is not the same discount.
Add every unavoidable cost

2. Establish who is selling, shipping and standing behind the transaction
On a marketplace, the website displaying the listing may not be the seller, shipper or warranty provider. Those roles determine where you seek help when the device is defective or the listing is inaccurate.
Verify the seller
- Capture the seller’s legal or trading name, physical or mailing address, telephone number and customer-service channel.
- Read recent, independent feedback for this seller, paying attention to complaints about counterfeit goods, wrong models, grading, refunds and unresponsive support.
- Check whether the seller is an authorized dealer for the manufacturer when that matters to warranty eligibility or authenticity.
- Use the marketplace’s seller-information and disclosure tools. The FTC’s INFORM Consumers Act guidance explains why identifying high-volume marketplace sellers and their contact information matters to buyers.
Map the protection path
Before checkout, locate the marketplace’s dispute, “item not as described” and buyer-protection rules. Note whether the protection applies to this seller, product category and condition. Find the deadline for opening a claim; it may be shorter than the manufacturer’s warranty period.
Save a PDF or screenshots of the listing, photographs, condition grade, promised accessories, delivery estimate, seller messages and applicable policy. If a representative promises a repair, refund or accessory, obtain that promise in writing through a channel you can retain.

Pay through the marketplace where possible, and choose a payment method that offers a documented dispute process. Avoid payment methods that are difficult or impossible to reverse if the item never arrives or is materially different from the listing. The FTC’s online-marketplace advice recommends checking refund rules, knowing who can help with a problem and using a safe payment method.

3. Translate the condition label into specific facts
“New,” “open box,” “used,” “refurbished,” “clearance,” “close-out” and “as is” are not interchangeable guarantees. A label may describe sales status rather than the device’s cosmetic, functional or battery condition.
Ask what happened to this unit
- Was it returned by a customer, used as a display model, repaired, recertified or simply cleared from inventory?
- Which functions were tested, and by whom? Ask specifically about cameras, speakers, microphones, ports, wireless radios, biometric sensors, displays, buttons and charging.
- What parts were repaired or replaced? For a battery-powered device, ask for battery-health information or the seller’s minimum capacity, if one is promised.
- Which cosmetic defects remain: scratches, dents, screen marks, missing labels or worn finishes?
- Are all accessories, manuals, software licenses, remote controls and proprietary cables included?
Request photographs of the actual unit rather than only stock images. Keep the written answers. If the seller will not state what was tested or what is missing, price the offer as an unknown-risk purchase rather than assuming factory-like condition.
Check authenticity and ownership signals
Unusually cheap branded electronics can be counterfeit or stolen. The FTC warns buyers to scrutinize seller identity and authenticity when an expensive branded product is offered at an unusually low price. Compare serial-number format, packaging, security seals and included documentation with the manufacturer’s information, and ask whether the serial number can be checked before purchase. Do not buy if the seller cannot explain provenance or refuses to provide a verifiable serial number when one is normally available.
4. Read the return policy before you place the order
A return right is useful only if you can use it within the stated period and afford the required process. Open the policy from the specific listing or seller page; do not rely on a general marketplace summary.

Record these terms
- The exact number of calendar or business days, and when the clock starts: order, shipment, delivery or activation.
- Whether sale, clearance, open-box, used or refurbished items are excluded or subject to a shorter window.
- Whether the device must be unopened, reset, complete with accessories or free of account locks.
- Who pays return postage and whether an international return requires customs paperwork.
- Any restocking, inspection or cancellation fee.
- Whether the remedy is a refund to the original payment method, store credit, exchange or repair.
- How you obtain a return authorization, shipping label and proof of receipt.
Save the policy and the claim deadline on the day you buy. The FTC’s marketplace guidance and online-shopping guidance both stress checking the seller’s refund and return rules rather than assuming ordinary merchandise terms apply.
Plan an arrival inspection
- Record the package and device condition as you open it, including the serial number and included accessories.
- Check that the model and storage or memory configuration match the order.
- Test charging, startup, display, controls, ports, connectivity and the features you need before installing personal data.
- Check for activation locks, previous accounts, mobile-device-management enrollment or region restrictions.
- Initiate a return promptly if the device fails the listing’s promises; do not wait until the last day.
5. Evaluate the written warranty, not a seller’s promise
A warranty is a specific commitment from a manufacturer, seller or other provider. Its value depends on who provides it, how much time remains and what remedy is available.
Extract the operative terms
- Provider and contact details.
- Original duration and the remaining period for this unit.
- Failures covered, and exclusions for batteries, accidental damage, liquid, consumables, software or unauthorized repair.
- Repair, replacement, refund or prorated remedy.
- Registration, proof-of-purchase, serial-number or diagnostic requirements.
- Labor, shipping, inspection and cross-border charges.
- Whether coverage transfers to a second owner and applies in your country or sales region.
- Claim steps, expected turnaround and what happens if the provider cannot repair the device.
Under the FTC’s warranty guidance, warranty terms must be available before purchase. Save the warranty, receipt, listing and any condition statement together. A seller’s “tested” claim is not a substitute for written warranty coverage.

6. Check software and security support for connected devices
For phones, tablets, computers, routers, cameras, wearables, appliances and other connected products, the purchase decision includes future software support. An older device may work today but lose security fixes, bug fixes, operating-system compatibility or advertised features sooner than a newer model.

Find a model-specific support commitment
- Search the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model or model family, not merely the product line.
- Look for a stated update-support duration, end date or minimum number of operating-system and security updates.
- Distinguish operating-system upgrades, firmware updates, security patches, application support and cloud-service availability.
- Check whether support begins at launch, first sale, activation or another date, and whether regional variants receive the same updates.
Do not infer remaining support from the device’s age or from an older model’s policy. In a 2024 FTC review of smart-product disclosures, staff observed that manufacturers often did not tell prospective buyers how long updates would be provided. The FTC’s staff paper, “Smart Device Makers’ Failure to Provide Updates May Leave You Smarting,” explains why an undisclosed support horizon can create a costly ownership risk.
If no support end date is published, treat that uncertainty as a disadvantage. Ask the seller or manufacturer in writing, and decide whether the device remains acceptable if security updates stop earlier than expected.

A discounted device can become expensive when its battery, screen, storage or other wear part fails. Check the repair path before buying, not after the first breakdown.
Questions to answer
- Can the battery or other likely wear parts be replaced without destructive disassembly?
- Are genuine or compatible parts available in your region, and for how long?
- Are repair manuals, diagnostic software and calibration tools available to authorized or independent technicians?
- What is the quoted labor and parts cost for common failures, and who pays shipping?
- Will opening the device or using an independent repairer affect the remaining warranty?
The FTC’s discussion of repair restrictions identifies glued-in batteries, limited spare parts, missing repair instructions and unavailable diagnostic software as barriers. A low purchase price does not offset a predictable replacement cost if the device cannot be serviced economically.
8. Treat extended coverage as a separate purchase
An add-on service contract is not automatically an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty. Compare it with the coverage already included or still remaining on the discounted device.
Compare the contract line by line
- Who is the provider, and who performs repairs?
- Does coverage overlap the manufacturer or seller warranty?
- Which failures are excluded, including accidental damage, batteries, cosmetic defects, data loss and pre-existing problems?
- Are there deductibles, service fees, shipping charges, claim limits or depreciation?
- Must you use a particular repair center, and can you receive a replacement instead of a repair?
- How do you cancel, and how are complaints handled?
The FTC’s extended-warranty and service-contract guidance recommends checking overlap, exclusions, costs, claim procedures and the provider’s complaint record. Buy the contract only if its additional protection addresses a realistic risk at a price that fits the device’s replacement cost.
9. Compare competing offers on the same decision grid
When two or more listings seem attractive, put their differences in one table. The largest percentage discount is not necessarily the best value.

A larger discount may not compensate for uncertain authenticity, a short return window, expired software support or a repair that costs nearly as much as replacement.
10. Use this pre-payment checklist
- Write down the exact model and configuration.
- Calculate the delivered cost, including taxes, shipping, plans and required accessories.
- Identify the legal seller, shipper and warranty provider.
- Read independent feedback and confirm marketplace dispute coverage.
- Get condition, testing, repairs, battery status and included accessories in writing.
- Check authenticity signals and obtain a verifiable serial number when appropriate.
- Record the return deadline, exclusions, postage responsibility, fees and refund method.
- Save the written warranty and verify remaining, transferable coverage.
- Find the exact model’s software-update and security-support end date.
- Estimate parts availability and common repair costs.
- Evaluate any service contract separately from the included warranty.
- Pay through a protected route and save the listing, policies, receipt and messages.
When to walk away
Do not proceed when the seller will not identify itself, the device’s model or condition is unclear, the price requires an unexplained payment route, the return policy is unavailable, the serial number appears altered, or the warranty and support status cannot be verified. Also reconsider when a short return period leaves too little time to test the device, or when a nonreplaceable wear part and scarce repairs make an early failure financially unacceptable.
Bottom line
Buy the discounted device only after the full cost, seller protections, actual condition, return path, remaining warranty, software-support horizon and repair options are documented. If any of those remain unknown, the discount is compensation for risk—not proof of value.
