1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a detachable when you will regularly remove the keyboard and use the screen as a tablet. Choose a convertible when the keyboard should stay attached and most of your time will be spent in notebook mode, with occasional tent, stand or tablet positions. Before paying, verify the exact model and generation: package contents, keyboard and pen compatibility, complete carry weight, display and input quality, ports, software support, realistic battery evidence, total accessory cost, warranty and repair options.
Detachable or convertible: which form fits your routine?
“Hybrid laptop” is a broad shopping term. The useful distinction is how the keyboard is attached. A detachable has a tablet-style display and a keyboard attachment that comes off. A convertible keeps the keyboard attached while its display folds through different positions. Microsoft Learn describes a 2-in-1 as an evolution of the notebook “also know as a convertible notebook” that comes in detachable and convertible styles. HP uses the same practical distinction: the detachable separates the screen from its keyboard, while the convertible folds without removing it.

| Characteristic | Detachable | Convertible |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard | Removable attachment; tablet can be used alone | Permanently attached; folds behind or beneath the display |
| Best match | Frequent tablet, handwriting, reading or presentation use | Mostly notebook work with occasional tent, stand or tablet use |
| Desk footprint | Often needs a kickstand or separate support when detached | Hinge supplies the support in every mode |
| Lap use | Depends heavily on the kickstand, keyboard cover and surface | Usually behaves more like a conventional laptop, but hinge design still matters |
| Internal hardware | More components must fit behind the display | Base generally provides more room for cooling, ports and other components |
Choose a detachable when tablet mode is a real activity
A detachable makes sense if you expect to remove the keyboard several times a week for reading, handwritten notes, sketching, signing documents, field work or carrying only the screen to a meeting. Removing the keyboard can make the device feel more like a tablet, but you must accept that the display contains the computer and may need a kickstand for comfortable desk use.
Choose a convertible when typing dominates
A convertible is the safer choice when you write for long periods, work from your lap, use a full-size keyboard and trackpad, or need ports and cooling hardware housed in the base. Tent and stand modes are useful for video calls, recipes and presentations without requiring a separate keyboard decision. The attached keyboard remains part of the device’s size and weight in every mode.

1. Start with a use-case inventory, not a processor name
Write down what you will do during a normal week and how often each task happens. Separate “must work” applications from activities that can be done in a browser. This prevents a premium-looking 2-in-1 from being rejected for the wrong reason—or purchased for a workload it cannot support.
- Office documents, spreadsheets, email and browser tabs
- Video meetings with camera, microphone and external display requirements
- Handwriting, drawing or annotation with an active pen
- Photo or video editing and the graphics performance those programs require
- Software development, virtual machines or local databases
- Specialist business, engineering, medical, education or industrial applications
For each task, record the operating system, plug-ins, peripherals, file formats and security requirements. A device can have an impressive specification and still fail if the publisher does not support its processor platform or operating-system edition.
2. Verify the complete model and generation
Product families often contain several screen sizes, processors, memory capacities, storage options and regional bundles. Retail pages may shorten the model name, so copy the full model number or part number and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification page, invoice and box label.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Capture the exact identifier. Include generation, screen size, processor family, memory, storage, wireless option and regional keyboard layout.
- Open the specification for that identifier. Do not rely on a family-level page that combines several configurations.
- Check what is in the box. Look for the keyboard, charger, pen, pen loop or storage, and any proprietary adapter.
- Check compatibility separately. A keyboard or pen that fits one generation may not fit another, even when the product names look similar.
- Save the specification and warranty pages. Bundles, service terms and component availability can change after purchase.
Lenovo’s ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2 specification illustrates why this matters: it lists keyboard and no-keyboard configurations and identifies an option with no pen bundled. Treat that as a model-specific example, not a rule for every detachable.
3. Treat the keyboard and pen as configuration decisions
Keyboard checks
Confirm whether the keyboard is included, optional or sold in multiple versions. Check the language layout, key travel, backlighting, trackpad size, pointing-device support and whether the attachment supplies a stable angle. A detachable cover that is comfortable on a desk may flex on a lap; a kickstand that works in landscape may be awkward for typing in a cramped seat.

Microsoft’s keyboard documentation distinguishes Surface Pro generations and separates keyboards with pen storage and charging from models without those features. Use the exact device generation when checking compatibility; do not assume that a keyboard advertised for a similarly named model will connect or charge a pen.
Pen checks
If handwriting or drawing is central, verify the exact active-pen model, pressure and tilt features claimed for that device, supported applications, charging method and storage location. Determine whether the pen is bundled, needs a separate charger or uses replaceable batteries. A specification can establish compatibility, but it cannot tell you whether the tip, glass surface, palm rejection and latency feel right for your writing style. Try the exact combination when possible.
4. Compare the weight you will actually carry
Tablet-only weight is useful only when you genuinely leave the keyboard behind. Add the keyboard, pen, charger, protective case and any USB-C hub or dock that travels with you. Also consider the thickness of the complete package in a sleeve or bag.
| Component | Mass | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2 tablet | 0.76 kg (1.67 lb) | Configuration-specific figure in Lenovo’s 2026 PSREF |
| Folio keyboard | 0.34 kg (0.75 lb) | Same specified configuration |
| Tablet plus folio keyboard | 1.1 kg (2.42 lb) | Combined figure for that configuration, not all detachable computers |
The 0.34 kg keyboard adds roughly 45 percent to the tablet’s listed mass. Your own charger, pen and hub increase it further, so compare the complete travel kit with the weight of a convertible and its charger.
5. Inspect the display for the way you will use it
Compare screen size, resolution, aspect ratio, brightness, reflectivity and touch response on the exact configuration. A larger panel can make documents and timelines easier to view but may be less comfortable as a handheld tablet. A glossy touch surface can improve perceived contrast while producing reflections near windows.

- Reading and documents: check text sharpness, scaling options and portrait usability.
- Drawing: check active-pen support, palm rejection, surface friction and the angle at which the kickstand or hinge holds the screen.
- Outdoor or bright-room work: look for measured brightness and the panel’s reflectivity, not only a “touch display” label.
- Video calls: verify camera position in laptop and tablet orientations, microphone placement and whether the display can be positioned without blocking the camera.
Manufacturer specifications can confirm resolution and supported input, but writing feel, glare and hinge stability are hands-on observations. Treat a reviewer’s impression as configuration-specific rather than a universal property of the product family.

6. Audit ports, displays and docking before you buy
Make a list of every accessory you use: external monitors, USB-A devices, card readers, wired headphones, Ethernet, external storage, printer, camera or presentation adapter. Compare that list with the ports on the exact model. For each USB-C port, confirm whether it supports charging, data, video output or all three; identical-looking ports can have different capabilities.
HP notes that many hybrid designs sacrifice legacy ports and recommends checking the specifications. A hub or dock can restore missing connections, but it adds cost, occupies a port and becomes another item to carry. Confirm that it supports your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, the required USB speeds, network connection and power delivery. Microsoft lists wired or wireless docking and casting among relevant 2-in-1 considerations, but those capabilities still depend on the particular hardware and operating system.
7. Match performance and software support to named workloads
Evaluate processor platform, memory, storage and graphics together. Browser-heavy office work may be comfortable with a different configuration than video editing, code compilation or a virtual machine. Check whether memory is soldered, whether storage can be replaced and how much free space remains after the operating system and recovery partition.
Specialist software requires publisher confirmation
Do not assume ARM or x86 is universally faster or more compatible. For specialist applications, contact the software publisher or consult its current support matrix for the exact operating system, processor architecture, drivers, plug-ins and required security components. Do the same for hardware that connects through a driver, license dongle or proprietary interface.

There is no independent, current cross-platform compatibility matrix or comparative benchmark set established for all detachable and convertible models. Treat retailer performance labels as starting points, not proof that your application will run correctly.
8. Read battery claims as estimates, not guarantees
Find the manufacturer’s test method, stated configuration and workload behind any runtime figure. Compare independent reviews that test a workload resembling yours: browser tabs and video calls, local video playback, drawing, compiling or editing. Note screen brightness, wireless settings, performance mode and whether the test measured until shutdown or a specified remaining charge.
Microsoft’s Surface guide uses “all-day battery life” as a manufacturer product claim, and HP discusses battery claims for its own examples. Those statements do not establish an independent, comparable result across detachable and convertible models. No suitable independent cross-model battery statistic is established here, so do not convert marketing maximums into a guaranteed number of hours.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Calculate total ownership cost
Compare the price of a usable system, not a bare tablet. Add the keyboard, compatible pen, charger if it is not included, protective case, USB-C hub or dock and any service plan you would actually buy. Regional taxes, currency, education discounts and temporary bundles can change the final amount, so record the date and region of each quote.
Recommended Free Tools
Check whether the keyboard and pen are sold separately and whether buying them later costs more or risks a generation mismatch. If you need a dock for work, include it in the first-year budget rather than treating it as an optional luxury. A lower tablet price can disappear once the required accessories are added.

10. Check warranty, repairability and parts access
Read the warranty duration, country coverage, accidental-damage exclusions, battery treatment and repair process for the exact model. Ask how shipping, data loss and turnaround are handled if the device fails.
Microsoft publishes a self-repair list showing replaceable components for particular Surface models and provides a service-guide directory with device-level procedures. Consult the materials for your exact model before buying parts or attempting a repair. A component appearing on a replaceable-parts list does not mean the job is simple, inexpensive or suitable for every owner; battery safety and adhesive removal can require specialized tools and training.
Do not generalize Microsoft’s repair information to another manufacturer. For any brand, look for model-specific guides, legitimate parts channels and local service terms. If a detachable’s computer is inside the display, a damaged screen can affect both the tablet and the complete laptop, making repair pricing especially important.
11. Use a side-by-side decision worksheet
When two or more candidates remain, record facts and observations separately. Facts come from the exact specification and warranty documents; observations come from hands-on use or a review that tested the same configuration.
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Mode frequency | How often you will remove the keyboard or fold the screen |
| Travel weight | Tablet or base alone, complete keyboard setup, charger, pen and hub |
| Typing | Key feel, flex, trackpad size, lap stability and layout |
| Support | Kickstand or hinge positions, desk footprint and lap comfort |
| Display | Size, resolution, aspect ratio, brightness, reflections and touch response |
| Pen | Supported model, bundle status, storage, charging and writing feel |
| Performance | Processor platform, memory, storage, graphics and named application support |
| Connectivity | USB-C charging/data/video, USB-A, audio, card reader, display and dock support |
| Battery | Test method, configuration and independent result for a comparable workload |
| Ownership | Complete purchase cost, warranty, repair guides and parts availability |
If a value is not stated for a candidate, mark it “not stated” and seek the model’s documentation rather than inferring it from a similar configuration.
12. Follow this pre-purchase verification sequence
- Describe your routine. Decide whether tablet-only work, typing, drawing, lap use or ports is the dominant requirement.
- List non-negotiable software. Confirm operating-system, architecture, driver and plug-in support with each publisher.
- Identify the exact configuration. Record model number, generation, processor, memory, storage, display and regional layout.
- Validate the package. Confirm keyboard, pen, charger and any storage or charging accessory in the box.
- Build the travel weight. Add all accessories you will carry, not just the headline tablet or laptop mass.
- Map the ports. Match every monitor and peripheral to the ports or to a compatible hub or dock.
- Check battery evidence. Read the test conditions and find an independent result that resembles your workload.
- Price the complete system. Include accessories, taxes or regional differences, service plans and likely replacement items.
- Read service terms. Save warranty coverage, repair instructions and parts information for the exact model.
- Test the physical experience. If possible, type on the keyboard, use the trackpad, write with the pen, switch modes and place the device on your usual desk or lap.
13. Red flags that should pause the purchase
- The listing shows a family name but no generation or full part number.
- The product image includes a keyboard or pen that the package list does not mention.
- A compatible accessory is described only by a broad family name, with no generation reference.
- The quoted weight applies to the tablet or base alone, while the keyboard and charger are omitted.
- Ports are shown in a photograph but their charging, data and video functions are not specified.
- Battery life is presented as “all day” or a maximum figure without test conditions.
- Your specialist software publisher does not confirm support for the processor platform and operating system.
- Warranty coverage, regional service and repair-part access are unclear.
How to make the final choice
Select the detachable if removing the keyboard is a frequent, valuable part of your routine and you accept the trade-offs of a kickstand-based setup, accessory-dependent typing and tablet-contained hardware. Select the convertible if you mostly need a dependable notebook, want the keyboard always available, use the device on your lap or need the base’s space for ports and components.
Neither form is automatically superior. The right purchase is the exact configuration whose complete weight, input devices, screen, ports, software support, battery evidence, cost and service terms match the way you will use it.
