Before you buy, check whether the game’s themes and play style suit you, whether your computer and operating system meet its listed requirements, what content it discloses, and what recent players say. Also confirm whether it is in Early Access and understand Steam’s refund policy. These checks help you judge fit; they cannot guarantee performance or enjoyment.
1. Check the game’s themes and play style
Dark fantasy can describe very different experiences. A store page may point to grim action combat, survival horror, exploration, or a story-led adventure. Read the description and look at tags for clues about themes, genre, camera perspective, and gameplay before you buy.

Steam tags help people browse games, search by tag, and get recommendations. Developers, players, and moderators may apply them, so treat tags as useful signals rather than a complete or definitive account of a game. Read the description and inspect screenshots or other store-page material alongside them. Steamworks’ explanation of Steam Tags

2. Compare system requirements with your computer
On each game’s Steam store page, check the requirements for your operating system. Compare the listed processor, memory, graphics hardware, and storage with your computer, and confirm that the game supports your platform. Requirements can differ between operating systems; for example, Steam pages may list separate specifications for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
Use the game’s own page for the current requirements. Blade of Darkness and Lust for Darkness illustrate the kinds of system details Steam may list. Meeting the minimum specification is not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth experience; actual results depend on the game and the computer.

3. Read content disclosures and relevant tags
Check the store page’s mature-content description and content-related tags against your own boundaries. Depending on what you want to avoid or are comfortable with, look for disclosures about violence, blood, gore, sexual content, or nudity. A game’s disclosure applies to that game, not to dark fantasy titles as a whole.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, Blade of Darkness’ Steam page describes animated violence, blood, and gore, while Lust for Darkness’ page includes sexual content and nudity among its tags. Read the specific game’s page rather than inferring its content from genre labels.

4. Look beyond the review percentage
Steam’s review score summarizes the proportion of positive reviews, but how reviews are calculated and displayed can be affected by factors such as purchase status, filtering of off-topic reviews, and whether reviews are available in your language. Treat the percentage as a starting point, not a verdict. Steam Support explains how user reviews work.
Read recent reviews and look for recurring comments related to your priorities. Players may discuss performance, difficulty, controls, or story; a repeated, specific concern is more useful for your decision than a score alone. Review summaries and recent feedback can change, so check the live page for the game you are considering.

5. Find out whether the game is in Early Access
If the store page identifies a game as Early Access, read what is playable now, what the developer says remains unfinished, and how development is progressing. Valve’s guidance says, “With Early Access games, you are going to be playing a work-in-progress.” Read Steam Support’s Early Access guidance and decide whether the current state—not only the planned final game—meets your expectations.
6. Understand Steam’s refund terms
Steam Support’s common refund guidance says Valve will, on request, refund a title requested within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours. You may still submit a request outside those conditions, but it will be reviewed rather than automatically covered by the standard terms. Check the current Steam refund policy and the terms that apply to your purchase; these thresholds are not a guarantee that every request will be approved.

Compare candidates using the same checks
When weighing two or more games, use the same criteria for each so that a striking trailer or high review percentage does not distract from a practical mismatch.
- Experience: compare tone, combat, difficulty, and narrative emphasis.
- Compatibility: check platform support and the requirements for your operating system.
- Content: read each game’s own content disclosures and relevant tags.
- Player feedback: inspect recent reviews for recurring issues that matter to you.
- Development state: check whether the game is Early Access and what is playable now.
- Purchase details: compare the price shown for your region and review the applicable refund terms.
Store tags and reviews can help you assess fit, but neither guarantees that a game will suit you. Prices, availability, requirements, tags, and review summaries can change; check each game’s live Steam page before purchasing. Darkwood’s Steam page is another example of a store page with tags and a review summary, not a recommendation or ranking.
