What to Check Before Buying a Custom-Built Multi-GPU AI Workstation

Before paying for a custom multi-GPU AI workstation, make the builder prove that the proposed machine fits your actual models and software. Check, in order, the workload and per-GPU memory, framework support, PCIe slot wiring, system RAM, storage lane sharing, power delivery, physical spacing, cooling, and documented acceptance tests. A machine with more GPUs is not automatically faster or more useful if the software cannot distribute work across them or the platform throttles under sustained load.

Start with the workload, not the GPU count

The right configuration depends on the models, datasets, applications, context sizes, image or video pipelines, and training jobs you intend to run. NVIDIA’s certified configuration guidance puts the principle plainly: “The size of your application workload, datasets, models, and specific use case will impact your hardware selections and deployment considerations.” Treat that as the first buying question, not a footnote after a parts list.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Give the builder a written workload brief. Include the largest model you expect to run, quantization format, context length, batch size, whether you fine-tune, the number of simultaneous users, and whether jobs run continuously or only in short bursts. For image and video work, list the workflows and output resolutions. For training, include dataset size, checkpoint frequency, and whether the job must fit in one machine.

  • Inference: identify the model, quantization, context window, and target concurrency.
  • Fine-tuning or training: identify parameter count, sequence length, batch size, optimizer, and checkpoint storage needs.
  • Generative image or video: list the applications, models, resolutions, and whether multiple jobs must run at once.
  • Development and testing: state which frameworks and GPU backends your team will use.

Ask the builder to map each requirement to a component and to mark assumptions that still need confirmation. A proposal that only says “four high-end GPUs” has not demonstrated suitability.

Check VRAM per GPU and how software uses it

GPU memory is usually the limiting resource for local AI work. Check the memory on each card separately, then ask how your software will use multiple cards. Adding their capacities together does not guarantee that a program will pool the memory or run efficiently across them.

Use model size as an initial capacity check

NVIDIA’s multi-GPU AI PC guide gives these illustrative estimates for quantized large language models:

Approximate model size Illustrative VRAM estimate What can change the result
30 billion parameters About 24GB Quantization, context length, batch size, runtime overhead
70 billion parameters 40GB or more Quantization, context length, batch size, runtime overhead
120 billion parameters About 70GB when context is included Quantization, context length, batch size, runtime overhead

These are guide estimates, not guarantees for every model or runtime. Have the builder calculate the memory requirement for your exact model and settings, and leave headroom for the operating system, framework allocations, longer contexts, and concurrent workloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the multi-GPU software path

Multi-GPU behavior is framework-specific. NVIDIA documents supported approaches for llama.cpp and ComfyUI and states that the GPU pairs used in those paths must be homogeneous. That does not establish compatibility for every framework, model, or mixed-card combination.

Ask for four concrete answers:

  1. Which framework and version will be used?
  2. Does it split a model across GPUs, replicate a model on each GPU, or assign separate jobs to separate cards?
  3. Must the cards be identical, or are different models and memory sizes supported?
  4. What exact configuration will the builder verify before delivery?

If the answer is “the operating system sees all the GPUs,” that is not enough. Detection proves that the hardware is visible; it does not prove that your application can load a model across the cards or achieve useful utilization.

Consider professional cards only when their trade-offs fit

NVIDIA lists the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell family with 96GB of ECC GDDR7 memory and a PCIe Gen 5 x16 interface. The Workstation Edition is listed at 600W. The Max-Q Workstation Edition is listed at 300W and described as optimized for dense workstation configurations of up to four GPUs. The lower-power Max-Q design can simplify density and thermal planning, while the 600W Workstation Edition offers a different power and cooling profile. Neither specification alone makes a card the right choice; match the edition to your airflow, slot spacing, workload, and budget.

Inspect the motherboard’s real PCIe topology

Do not rely on a motherboard product page that merely says “multi-GPU support.” Open the exact manual and inspect the slot map, CPU lane count, chipset connections, and lane-sharing rules with every planned drive and expansion card installed.

Require a lane-width map

For its two-GPU configuration examples, NVIDIA recommends at least PCIe Gen 5 x8 per GPU. Ask the builder to provide a table showing the expected negotiated link for every GPU under the final configuration. The answer should name the physical slot, electrical width, PCIe generation, and any device that shares those lanes.

Item to verify Question for the builder Why it matters
GPU slot wiring Which CPU-connected slots will the cards occupy? Physical slot position does not always equal full electrical bandwidth.
Lane width Will each GPU negotiate at the intended x8 or x16 width? Reduced lanes can limit transfer bandwidth and may signal an unsuitable layout.
PCIe generation Which generation will each slot actually use? Generation and lane width together determine link bandwidth.
Storage sharing Does an M.2 socket disable or reduce a GPU slot? Adding storage can change GPU allocation after the original proposal is written.
Other expansion cards Do network, capture, or controller cards consume CPU lanes? Every added device can alter the final topology.

Check the effect of M.2 drives before ordering storage

NVIDIA specifically warns that adding an M.2 drive can reduce GPU slot lanes. A board may offer several sockets, but not all sockets are independent. Have the builder install the intended drives first, then verify the lane assignment in BIOS. If a second or third drive changes a GPU from the planned width, choose a different socket, a different storage arrangement, or a board with more CPU-connected lanes.

Match the CPU and board to the lane requirement

The CPU platform must supply enough lanes for the proposed GPU arrangement and any essential storage or networking. In workstation and server guidance, NVIDIA recommends matching GPU connections to the specific GPU’s PCIe specification and balancing GPUs across CPU sockets and PCIe root ports. That advice applies to those platforms; it is not a universal desktop rule. Ask which platform rule the builder is applying and why.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request a BIOS screenshot, diagnostic report, or equivalent evidence after assembly. The document should show every GPU, its negotiated link width and generation, and the installed M.2 devices. “Supports four GPUs” without this evidence leaves the most important topology question unanswered.

Size system memory for the workload and platform

System RAM holds datasets, model files, preprocessing buffers, operating-system activity, and data that does not fit in VRAM. NVIDIA’s consumer multi-GPU guide gives 64GB as a typical-use minimum and 128GB for roughly 100-billion-parameter LLM work or fine-tuning. Those figures describe that consumer build guidance.

NVIDIA’s certified server documentation uses a different rule for the server configurations it covers: at least twice the total GPU memory in system RAM. Do not transfer that server recommendation automatically to a desktop workstation, and do not assume the consumer minimum is sufficient for a server-style workload. Make the builder state which platform and workload recommendation applies.

  • Ask for the installed capacity, number of memory channels populated, and planned upgrade capacity.
  • Check whether adding more DIMMs reduces supported speed or changes stability on the selected platform.
  • Reserve capacity for datasets and preprocessing rather than allocating every gigabyte to the application.
  • If the workload includes several users or containers, size for concurrent use instead of a single benchmark run.

Plan storage without sacrificing GPU lanes

Model repositories, datasets, checkpoints, container images, and temporary files can consume terabytes quickly. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU build guide recommends one PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD of 4TB or larger for its example system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same guide says RAID across NVMe drives does not meaningfully improve the AI loading patterns it describes. That does not make RAID universally wrong; it means you should not add drives and complexity expecting an automatic AI performance gain. Prioritize enough capacity, sustained reliability, backup, and a lane layout that preserves the GPU links.

Ask these storage questions

  1. What is the usable capacity after formatting and the operating-system allocation?
  2. Which M.2 socket will hold the boot and model drive?
  3. Will any additional M.2 drive reduce a GPU’s negotiated lanes?
  4. Where will datasets, checkpoints, and backups live?
  5. What is the replacement plan if the primary drive fails?

A single large drive can simplify lane planning, while separate drives can help isolate operating-system activity, datasets, and scratch files. Choose between them based on the board’s wiring and your recovery plan, not on a generic “more drives is faster” assumption.

Demand a build-specific power calculation

Power requirements depend on the exact GPUs, CPU, memory, storage, fans, and sustained workload. Reject a proposal that chooses a power supply from GPU count alone.

Use NVIDIA’s figures as examples, not universal requirements

Example configuration in NVIDIA’s guide Power guidance Qualification
Two RTX 5090 GPUs with a Ryzen 9 9950X CPU At least 1600W; 1800W recommended for headroom Example build figure, not a universal requirement
Two RTX 5080 GPUs 1200–1400W Example range; final hardware determines the requirement

For the cited build guidance, NVIDIA specifies a CEM 5.1-compliant power supply and a dedicated 12V-2×6 cable from the PSU for each GPU. Have the builder identify the exact PSU model, its continuous rating, connector count, and cable routing. Do not treat adapters, shared leads, or an unexplained “high-wattage” label as proof of compliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check transient and sustained headroom

Ask for the estimated draw of the complete system and the margin above that draw during simultaneous GPU and CPU load. Headroom should account for sustained operation, not only a short startup figure. The builder should explain how the PSU rating, cable configuration, and wall-power circuit fit the intended environment.

Verify case fit, slot spacing, and cooling

Two or more high-power air-cooled cards can physically fit while still being thermally unsuitable. NVIDIA notes that closely stacked RTX 5090 cards can run hot because the upper card starves the lower card’s intake. Its example recommends a full-tower ATX or open-frame ATX case for that arrangement.

Confirm physical clearances

  • Measure the card length, height, thickness, and power-connector clearance against the case specification.
  • Confirm that adjacent slots leave each cooler’s intake unobstructed.
  • Check radiator, front-fan, drive-cage, and side-panel interference.
  • Leave room for the 12V-2×6 cables to bend without pressing against the connector.
  • Verify that the motherboard’s slot spacing matches the cooler thickness, not merely the number of available slots.

Ask for a sustained-load thermal plan

Request the intended fan layout, intake and exhaust direction, and the expected operating behavior during a long, simultaneous workload. A photograph of an assembled system does not show whether the lower card receives enough cool air. If the cards are tightly stacked, ask whether a different card edition, a wider case, an open-frame layout, or a liquid-cooling design is required. The correct answer depends on the selected hardware and the builder’s validated design.

Specify the configuration and acceptance tests before delivery

Put the verification requirements in the purchase order or written proposal. NVIDIA’s guide calls out several checks that a builder should perform before handing over the system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the motherboard BIOS: record the installed BIOS version and the date of the update.
  2. Install every intended component: include the final GPUs, M.2 drives, memory modules, and expansion cards before validating lanes.
  3. Verify GPU detection: show that every card appears in the operating system and the intended driver stack.
  4. Check PCIe allocation: record the negotiated generation and lane width for each GPU in BIOS or an equivalent diagnostic.
  5. Inspect power connectors: fully seat every GPU connector and document cable routing with sufficient slack to avoid tight bends.
  6. Run a representative workload: use your framework, model class, or image pipeline rather than an unrelated synthetic test.
  7. Deliver the evidence: request screenshots, a configuration report, and the test conditions, including driver and framework versions.

Do not claim that a system is validated merely because it boots. Validation means the delivered hardware, software path, lane layout, and representative workload were checked together.

Compare proposals on capability, not headline specifications

When you receive two or more custom proposals, compare the same fields line by line. A lower quote can hide fewer memory channels, reduced GPU lane width, inadequate spacing, or no delivery testing.

Comparison axis What to record Warning sign
Workload capacity Per-GPU VRAM, GPU count, model fit, and supported software path Total VRAM is quoted without explaining how the application uses it
Platform CPU, motherboard, slot map, lane width with final storage, and upgrade options “Multi-GPU ready” with no manual-based topology
Sustained operation PSU rating and standard, dedicated cables, spacing, fan plan, and thermal validation Power supply selected only by adding nominal GPU wattages
System resources RAM capacity and channel plan, storage capacity, drive type, and lane sharing Extra drives are added without checking their effect on GPU slots
Delivery evidence BIOS version, GPU detection, negotiated links, workload test, and report “Tested” with no test conditions or screenshots
Purchase terms Price, warranty, service, delivery date, and replacement process Technical specifications are detailed but support obligations are vague

Price, warranty, service, delivery, and validation terms vary by vendor and geography. Obtain them in writing rather than inferring them from the hardware list.

Know when a workstation is not the right deployment model

NVIDIA’s certified-systems guidance distinguishes single-node workloads from multi-node clustered workloads. If the job must distribute resources across several machines, you also need networking, cluster software, storage access, scheduling, and operational procedures. Four GPUs inside one workstation do not automatically create a cluster, and a workstation cannot replace a multi-node design when the application requires resources spread across machines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether your software needs one large shared memory space, several independent workers, or multiple machines communicating over a network. That answer affects the platform, networking hardware, storage design, and support plan before you select the case or PSU.

A pre-purchase checklist you can send to the builder

  • Workload brief lists models, quantization, context, batch size, datasets, applications, and concurrency.
  • Per-GPU VRAM is sufficient, with documented headroom for the intended settings.
  • Framework support for multi-GPU execution is named and tested; homogeneity requirements are understood.
  • Motherboard manual confirms the intended slot wiring and PCIe generation.
  • Expected lane width for every GPU is documented with all M.2 and expansion devices installed.
  • System RAM follows a stated workload and platform rationale.
  • Storage capacity meets model, dataset, checkpoint, and backup needs without reducing GPU lanes.
  • PSU calculation covers the exact GPU and CPU models, with appropriate headroom.
  • Each GPU has the required dedicated 12V-2×6 cable where the build guidance calls for it.
  • Case dimensions, slot spacing, connector clearance, and airflow are confirmed for sustained load.
  • BIOS update, GPU detection, PCIe negotiation, connector seating, and representative workload testing are included in delivery acceptance.
  • Warranty, service, delivery, and the evidence supplied with validation are written into the order.

Bottom line

Buy the validated workload configuration, not the largest GPU count. The proposal should show how each model fits in per-card VRAM, how the chosen framework distributes work, how the motherboard preserves the intended PCIe links, and how RAM, storage, power, spacing, and cooling support sustained operation. Require documented BIOS, detection, lane, connector, and workload checks before delivery. If a builder cannot provide those details, the machine is still a parts list rather than a dependable AI workstation.
