Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before buying a Commander precon, verify the exact release and edition, check the official product contents and card list, and compare those details with the seller’s actual listing. A decklist can identify card names without proving which physical printings are in the box, and a marketplace listing does not establish the seller’s reliability or the deck’s value. Treat resale as a separate, time-sensitive calculation—not a promise that a sealed deck will appreciate.
Start by identifying the exact deck and edition
“Commander precon” describes a ready-to-play deck category, not one fixed package. The contents and card treatments can differ between releases and editions, so first pin down what you are considering. Match the complete deck name, release, and edition in the seller’s title and photographs to the corresponding official product page. If the seller uses a shortened name or a generic image, do not assume it identifies the precise version.

- Deck name and release: Use the full name shown on the official product page, not just the franchise or series name.
- Edition: Check whether the offer is for the standard deck, a Collector’s Edition, a Secret Lair release, or another special edition. Do not infer the edition from the word “collector” in a listing headline alone.
- Language and condition: Confirm that the seller’s stated version and condition match your needs. If photographs are important to the purchase, check that they show the item being sold rather than only generic packaging.
- What is included: Compare the listing against the official contents description. A sealed deck, opened deck, and incomplete deck are different purchases even if the title uses the same product name.
Wizards of the Coast’s Final Fantasy product page distinguishes standard and Collector’s Edition decks by foil treatment while describing the deck and accompanying items. That is a useful reminder that an edition can change what you receive or how the cards look even when the deck name is familiar. The specific product page—not assumptions carried over from another release—is the reference point.

What comes in a Commander precon?
Use the exact product’s official contents section to establish the package. Check the deck’s stated size and card treatment, then look for separately listed pieces such as tokens, a deck box, a reference card, counters, or a sample pack. Do not treat accessories as universal features of Commander precons: one release’s component list does not define another’s.
Use a product-specific contents checklist
- Open the official product page for the exact release and edition. Verify the title and edition match the seller’s offer before relying on the listed components.
- Read every item in the contents section. Note the deck size, card treatment, and each accessory named. Record whether an item is explicitly included or simply appears in a promotional image.
- Compare the seller’s description and photos. Look for a mismatch in edition, packaging, language, or completeness. If a listing does not say whether an item is included, treat that as unconfirmed rather than filling in the gap from another deck’s contents.
- Ask about discrepancies before paying. If the official description and listing appear inconsistent, request clarification about the exact sealed product or included pieces and retain the seller’s answer.
For a concrete example, Wizards says each Foundations Commander deck contains a ready-to-play 100-card deck, ten double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. The Final Fantasy product page also lists a Collector Booster Sample Pack. These are examples of the variation buyers need to check; they are not a general list of what every precon includes.
Product photos can help confirm packaging or visible components, but they may be promotional images rather than proof of the exact item in an individual listing. For an opened or used deck, ask for current photos and a clear account of what is present. A contents list tells you what the factory product is supposed to contain; it does not establish that a particular seller’s item remains complete.

How do I check the decklist before buying?
Find the official, product-specific decklist and use it to check card names, strategy, and any cards that matter to your decision. Then separately verify physical printings and treatments if those affect what you want. A digital decklist is not always a card-for-card display of the contents in the box.
Read the list and its caveat
Wizards’ Fallout Commander decklist page warns that its interactive lists can pull the newest printing of each card automatically from the card database, including printings that are not in the product. It says the lists are not card-for-card product displays, but interactive lists of cards included in each deck. In practice, that means the list can be useful for identifying the card names while failing to show the precise physical version supplied.
Use the page in two passes:
- Check the card names. Confirm the cards and overall deck contents that the official list identifies. If a particular card is central to your decision, verify its name and whether it is actually part of the relevant deck rather than relying on a general promotional description.
- Check printing details separately. Look for explicit product-specific information about the printing or treatment. If the list displays a newer image or version, do not assume that image represents the copy in the box.
- Resolve uncertainty using product-specific evidence. Consult the product contents description, explicit printing details, or product images where available. If those sources do not establish a particular version, regard it as unconfirmed.
This distinction matters most when you are buying for a particular card treatment, collecting, or comparing the value of exact singles. For ordinary play, the card names and deck strategy may be the primary questions; for a printing-sensitive purchase, the database display alone is not enough.

Which cards are reprints?
Check the product-specific official list and any explicit labels or printing details for the release. Do not infer that a card is new or reprinted from a generic deck page, a card image, or the fact that it appears in a list. Wizards’ product pages can identify new-to-Magic cards and reprints when that information is provided, but the evidence must apply to the specific deck you are considering.

Separate card identity from printing identity
A card name answers which game piece is listed; a physical printing is a particular version of that card. A card can have multiple printings, and an interactive decklist may show a database printing that is not the one in the product. Consequently, “the deck contains this card” and “the deck contains this exact version of the card” are different claims.
For each card you care about, note:
- Whether it is on the exact decklist. Check the list for the named product, not another deck in the same release.
- Whether the product source labels it new-to-Magic or a reprint. Use the source’s wording rather than guessing from familiarity with the card.
- Which physical treatment is established. If foil, art, frame, or another version affects your choice, require product-specific evidence for that detail.
If a source identifies a reprint but does not show the version in the box, you know the card name is returning, not necessarily which printing you will receive. Likewise, a list that shows a recent database image should not be used to claim that the product contains that exact image or treatment.

Compare decks by the same criteria
When choosing between multiple precons, compare equivalent details rather than letting a memorable card or a flashy package stand in for the whole purchase. Keep play value, collectible treatment, completeness, and resale potential separate: each answers a different question.
| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cards and strategy | The official list for each exact deck; whether the listed cards and strategy suit your intended play | A deck can be appealing because of its play pattern even when its individual printings are not your priority. |
| New cards and reprints | Product-specific labels and explicit card information | These help establish what is new to Magic or returning, but do not automatically establish a particular physical version. |
| Edition and treatments | Standard or special edition, plus stated foil or other treatment | Two offers with similar names may not describe the same product or card appearance. |
| Contents and completeness | Official component list compared with what the seller says and shows | Accessories and package contents vary by release; an opened item may also be incomplete. |
| Total purchase cost and terms | Current item price, shipping, condition, seller, and return terms on the live listing | The product’s identity does not tell you whether a particular offer is suitable or what you will pay in total. |
| Resale evidence | Recent completed sales and current listings for the same sealed product or exact card versions | Asking prices are not completed transactions, and different editions or printings are not interchangeable evidence. |
Give each criterion its own answer before choosing. For example, a deck may fit your preferred strategy but not include the specific printing you hoped for; another may have a treatment you like but lack an accessory you expected. Whether either trade-off is acceptable depends on your intended use, not on a universal ranking of precons.
How to inspect a seller’s listing
An official product page establishes details about the product, not the quality or accuracy of an individual live offer. Wizards may name a marketplace as a retail channel for some products, but that does not certify a specific seller, listing, item condition, or current price.

Check the offer, not just the headline
- Product match: Does the title identify the same deck, release, and edition as the official page?
- Edition and language: Are both stated clearly, and do the photographs support the description?
- Condition and seal: Is the item described as new, sealed, opened, or used? Do not treat these terms as equivalent.
- Completeness: For a non-sealed item, does the seller confirm the contents that matter to you?
- Seller and fulfillment: Who is actually selling the item, and who handles fulfillment? Check the specific offer rather than assuming every offer on a marketplace is the same.
- Total cost: Include shipping and any other charges displayed before checkout. Compare the total rather than the headline item price alone.
- Returns: Read the current return terms and note any conditions relevant to an opened, damaged, or incorrectly described item.
If the offer uses a generic image, omits an edition, or leaves condition unclear, ask for specifics before ordering. A low-looking price cannot resolve an identity mismatch. If the seller cannot establish which product is being sold, you cannot reliably compare it with the official contents or with another offer.
Is this Commander deck worth buying for resale?
There is no general resale verdict for Commander precons. The answer depends on the named product, edition, condition, and current transactions for the sealed deck or the exact card versions inside it. Official product pages establish product details; they do not establish current market prices or investment performance. No current resale figure follows from the product facts alone.
Use a dated, like-for-like comparison
- Define what you may resell. Decide whether you are evaluating the sealed deck as one item or the individual cards. Do not compare a sealed product’s asking price with the sum of unrelated card versions.
- Match the exact version. For a sealed deck, match the deck name, release, edition, and condition. For singles, match the exact card and printing or treatment you can verify. A standard version is not automatically comparable to a special edition or foil version.
- Look at completed sales and current listings separately. Completed transactions provide evidence that a buyer paid a price; active listings show what sellers are asking. An unsold asking price is not proof of achievable resale value.
- Use recent evidence and record when you checked. Market conditions change. Save the dates, versions, conditions, and prices used in your comparison so the result is not mistaken for a lasting value.
- Subtract selling costs. Account for marketplace fees, shipping, packaging, and any condition-related reduction or expense. Compare expected proceeds after those costs with what you would pay in total.
- Decide whether the remaining uncertainty is acceptable. If there are too few comparable sales, or the exact version is unclear, treat the resale estimate as uncertain rather than filling the gap with a confident number.
Do not combine a collectible treatment premium with play value as though they were the same benefit. If you want the deck to play, consider whether its cards and strategy fit you. If you want to resell it, evaluate dated transactions for the exact sealed product or printing and account for costs. A purchase can make sense for the first reason without being a sound resale proposition.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every precon includes the same accessories. Contents vary; consult the exact product’s component list.
- Taking a card image as proof of the printing in the box. Wizards warns that some interactive lists display database printings that are not in the product.
- Assuming a familiar card is a reprint in this particular release. Verify it in the product-specific source and use explicit labels where provided.
- Equating marketplace availability with seller approval. Check the actual seller, offer, condition, and terms.
- Using active asking prices as if they were completed sales. Keep listings and transactions distinct in any resale comparison.
- Applying one deck’s value or components to a different edition. Match the exact release and physical version before comparing.
- Treating a resale estimate as a promise of appreciation. Without dated, product-specific transaction data, no reliable dollar conclusion follows.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
Before you pay, make sure you can answer these questions from the official product information and the live offer:
- What is the exact deck name, release, and edition?
- Does the seller’s title and, where relevant, the photograph match that product?
- What does the official contents section say is included?
- Does the official product-specific decklist contain the cards you care about?
- Are new-to-Magic status, reprints, and particular printings explicitly established rather than inferred?
- Have you distinguished the decklist’s card names from the physical versions in the package?
- Are language, condition, completeness, seller, shipping, and return terms clear?
- If resale matters, have you compared dated completed sales for the exact version and deducted likely selling costs?
If any answer is unknown, decide whether it matters to your purchase and seek product-specific clarification before relying on it. That is more useful than treating the phrase “Commander precon” as a guarantee of a standard package, a particular printing, or a future resale price.
