What to Check Before Buying a Budget Phone With a Rear Display

A rear display can make rear-camera selfies and vlogs easier to frame, but it does not make a phone a good buy by itself. Before choosing one, confirm what the small screen actually does, then weigh the camera output, software-support commitment, battery, main display, storage, network compatibility and total purchase terms.

What can a rear display actually do?

Its clearest practical use is as a viewfinder: you can see your framing while using the rear camera for a selfie or video. But implementations vary. One phone may offer a live preview and camera controls; another may use the rear panel for a clock, incoming-call details, notifications or media controls. Confirm the functions on the exact model and regional version rather than assuming all rear screens work alike.

For example, Tom’s Guide’s May 2026 hands-on review describes the NUU B40 5G’s 1.6-inch rear AMOLED screen as useful for selfies and vlogging. Trend Hunter reports that the Honor Play20A’s rear screen can show time, incoming-call details and media information, as well as frame rear-camera shots; those are secondary-source claims, so verify them against Honor documentation before treating them as definitive.

Questions to ask about the feature

  • Does it show a live preview from the rear camera?
  • Does the preview work for both photos and video, and can you access the controls you need?
  • Is the image large and clear enough to frame a shot at the distances you expect to use?
  • Which notifications or utilities are supported, and do they work in your region and software version?

Will it improve your photos or video?

A rear display changes how you can use the camera; it does not establish that the camera takes better pictures. Look for sample photos and video, plus independent reviews in conditions that matter to you, such as indoor scenes, moving subjects or low light. Check video workflow as well: whether framing is comfortable, the controls are accessible, and the results meet your needs.

  • 【13MP Front + 21MP Rear Dual Camera & Intelligent Face Unlock】 Equipped with a 13MP front selfie camera and a 21MP rear main camera. Full package includes smartphone, charging adapter, Type-C cable, wired earphone, screen protector, protective case, SIM eject pin, OTG adapter and English user manual, ready to use out of the box.

Do not judge the camera by megapixels alone. A 64MP main camera, for instance, is a specification—not proof of strong image quality. Tom’s Guide lists a 64MP main camera and 2MP macro camera for the NUU B40 5G, but the rear screen’s usefulness and the camera’s output are separate questions.

How long will the phone receive software and security support?

Find the manufacturer’s update commitment for the precise model and region, and note how much of the promised support period remains. Android update policies vary by manufacturer, as Consumer Reports’ cell-phone buying guide notes. Tom’s Guide’s NUU B40 review also raises uncertainty about that phone’s future updates; that is the reviewer’s concern, not a confirmed manufacturer policy. If a clear commitment is not available, treat the phone’s support lifespan as uncertain rather than assuming it will match better-documented alternatives.

Are the battery and charging suitable?

Compare independent battery tests where possible. Capacity alone does not predict runtime: screen use, software, network conditions and workload all matter. Also check charging speed and whether a charger is included. Tom’s Guide’s cheap-phone guide compares battery and charging specifications alongside test outcomes, a more useful approach than choosing on battery capacity alone.

Is the main screen and hardware a good fit?

Main display

Check resolution, daylight readability and refresh rate, not just panel type or screen size. A large or high-refresh-rate display may be appealing, but it does not answer whether text is sharp enough or the screen is bright enough for your use.

Storage and performance

Choose enough storage for the photos and videos you plan to keep, and check performance reviews for the apps and games you actually use. Budget phones often trade performance or storage against price, so compare the precise configurations on sale rather than relying on a model name alone.

Will it work with your carrier, and what will it really cost?

Before ordering, verify that the exact regional variant is compatible with your carrier’s bands and services, whether it is unlocked, and what the seller’s warranty and return terms cover. Check current local stock and the total price, including any required accessories or shipping. A listed price in an older review is not a current quote, and availability can differ by market.

Its May 2026 review lists a 6.7-inch AMOLED main display with 120Hz refresh rate, Dimensity 7025, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, 64MP main and 2MP macro rear cameras, 16MP front camera, and 5,000mAh battery. Current price and local availability: not stated by Trend Hunter.
Xiaomi 17 Pro Omdia’s October 2025 report lists a 2.7-inch 120Hz secondary AMOLED panel. Not stated here as a budget-phone recommendation. Omdia reports a China launch context and a launch starting price in yuan; current local price and availability are not established here.
Xiaomi 17 Pro Max Omdia’s October 2025 report lists a 2.9-inch 120Hz secondary AMOLED panel. Not stated here as a budget-phone recommendation. Omdia reports a China launch context and a launch starting price in yuan; current local price and availability are not established here.

The Xiaomi models are higher-end comparisons, not budget recommendations. Canalys Principal Analyst for Smartphone Research Sanyam Chaurasia (Canalys is now part of Omdia) said the secondary display’s broader global value would depend on Xiaomi’s software ecosystem delivering everyday utility beyond the camera. That assessment concerns Xiaomi’s high-end model; it is not evidence that every rear display is equally useful.

  1. Confirm the rear-screen features: check live preview, photo and video support, camera controls, notifications and utilities for the exact regional version.
  2. Review camera evidence: inspect sample photos and videos and seek tests in conditions you care about; do not treat the rear viewfinder or megapixel count as proof of image quality.
  3. Verify software support: look for the maker’s update commitment for that model and region, including the remaining support period.
  4. Compare battery evidence: check independent runtime results, charging speed and included charger.
  5. Check everyday hardware: assess main-screen readability and resolution, storage capacity, and performance for your intended apps.
  6. Confirm purchase fit: check carrier compatibility, unlocked status, warranty, returns, local availability and total current price.
