What to Check Before Buying a Budget Laptop for School or Everyday Use

Before buying a budget laptop, check that it runs the software you need, then compare its memory, SSD, screen, battery life, connections and support. For everyday browsing, writing, email and video calls, a mainstream laptop is usually sufficient. Course software for engineering, design, animation or media can change the requirements, so confirm compatibility with your school before choosing a device.

Start with your school’s software and your everyday tasks

Make a short list of the most demanding things you expect the laptop to do: required course applications, browser tabs open alongside documents, video calls, large media files and any gaming or creative work. ASUS’s laptop buying guide puts it simply: “Before comparing models, list the three most demanding tasks you expect to perform.” ASUS laptop buying guide

Ask your school or institution which operating systems and applications your course requires, whether it offers software licenses or loan devices, and whether classroom peripherals have specific requirements. Windows is available across varied price points and is broadly compatible, while a Chromebook can work well for basic web tasks but may not run some specialist applications. Check the exact application and device requirements before deciding; do not assume an app will work just because it has a web version or a familiar name. For documents, browsing, email, video calls and routine office work, integrated graphics are generally enough. A dedicated graphics processor can be necessary for particular CAD, 3D, animation, video-editing or demanding gaming workloads, but it adds cost and is not a sensible default for every student.

Choose a configuration that fits the work

Part Practical target What to check
Memory (RAM) 8GB is a light-use floor; 16GB is a better target if affordable. Check the exact configuration and whether memory can be upgraded. An 8GB model may be adequate for light browsing and routine tasks, but multitasking and a longer ownership period make 16GB more attractive. These are general student-use recommendations, not fixed requirements for every operating system or workload. Microsoft student laptop guide; University of Hertfordshire
Storage Prefer an SSD; 256GB or more is a useful general target. Consider 512GB or larger if you keep substantial media or project files locally. Capacity needs depend on installed applications, personal files and cloud-storage use. Confirm whether the drive can be upgraded; do not assume two listings with the same laptop name have the same capacity. Microsoft; University of Hertfordshire; ASUS
Processor For ordinary study, compare current entry-level and mid-range models against your actual workload. One guide lists Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 as a minimum and Core i5 or Ryzen 5 as a stronger longevity choice, but a processor family name alone does not establish performance. Check the exact model and generation alongside memory and storage. University of Hertfordshire; Microsoft
Graphics Integrated graphics for routine study and office work; dedicated graphics only when specific software or demanding games call for them. Look up the course’s stated graphics requirements before paying for a GPU. University of Hertfordshire; ASUS

These figures are starting points, not guarantees. For example, New Zealand Ministry of Education advice describes at least 64GB of storage, 4GB RAM and six hours of battery life as school-device criteria for its context. Those lower school criteria should not be treated as the recommended configuration for every current student or everyday laptop buyer. New Zealand Ministry of Education parent guidance

Balance screen comfort with portability

A 14-inch screen is one suggested balance between portability and usability; a 15-inch screen can be more comfortable for detailed editing or design, but the laptop will generally be larger and heavier. Compare the actual display, resolution, keyboard and weight against how you will use and carry the machine. If possible, try the keyboard and screen in person rather than choosing by diagonal size alone. University of Hertfordshire; ASUS

Judge battery life by independent runtime tests

Battery capacity by itself does not tell you how long a laptop will last in class or on a commute. Look for independent runtime results for the exact model or configuration, and note the testing conditions. Real use varies with screen brightness, processor workload, calls, wireless connections and performance settings. A result from a different configuration may not describe the laptop you are buying. Check calls, ports and connections

Confirm that the exact laptop has the ports you need for charging, USB accessories, an external display or classroom equipment. Also check that the webcam and microphone are suitable for video calls, and that its wireless connectivity meets your needs. Do not rely on product-family specifications: manufacturers may sell configurations under similar names with different components or connections. University of Hertfordshire

Read the warranty, returns and support terms

Check the warranty period, whether the battery is covered, how repairs are handled, the retailer’s return terms and how long the manufacturer expects to provide security updates. These details affect the cost and usefulness of a low-priced laptop over time.

The UK Department for Education’s standards for school and college procurement specify five years of security patches or support and a three-year warranty for laptops and desktops. Those are institutional procurement standards, not terms guaranteed with consumer laptops. Check the terms for your exact purchase and location. Calculate the real cost before buying

Before paying for office software, cloud storage or accessories, ask whether your institution provides a license, storage allowance, loan device, grant or student discount. Offers and eligibility depend on the institution and region. Compare the complete configuration and terms across retailers: a low headline price may not be good value if the device lacks required software compatibility, adequate storage or suitable support. Verify the RAM, SSD, processor, screen and ports on the exact listing, not just the model name.

Buy only accessories you have a reason to use. A carry case can help protect a laptop that travels daily, but check its dimensions. A screen protector is relevant only if the selected device has a touchscreen and you want one; an external optical drive is needed only if a course requires discs.
