Specifications can differ between model years and regions, even when product names look similar.
What should I look for in a 55-inch TV?
Start with the room and the devices you plan to connect, then compare the exact TVs that fit those needs. 4K UHD means 3840 × 2160 pixels; it does not tell you how bright the screen gets, how well it handles reflections or motion, or how convincing its HDR picture looks.

- Picture: Compare the panel and backlight approach, contrast, measured brightness, reflection handling, color, grayscale, motion, and upscaling. Look for independent testing of the exact model where available. TechRadar, for example, describes checking brightness at multiple window sizes along with color, grayscale, contrast, input lag, and gaming features in its TV testing coverage. Those are useful comparison dimensions, not a guarantee that budget sets perform alike.
- HDR: Check which HDR formats the TV supports, then compare them with the streaming services and devices you use. An HDR label alone does not establish the screen’s brightness or the impact of HDR in a bright room.
- Motion and viewing angle: If you watch sports or sit to the side of the screen, check independent observations of motion handling and off-axis picture quality rather than relying on resolution or a feature badge.
Will a 55-inch TV fit the room?
Target’s 2026 TV buying guide suggests a viewing distance of 7–9 feet for a 55-inch television. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a universal standard: the comfortable distance depends on the room, the seating position, and personal preference. The guide also notes that bright rooms benefit from higher brightness and anti-glare handling (Target’s TV buying guide).

Which TVs are best for gaming?
The best fit depends on the console or PC, the games you play, and the features you care about. For a gaming setup, verify the native refresh rate and the capabilities of the specific HDMI input you intend to use. Look for explicit support for 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), and auto low latency mode (ALLM) if you want those features. Do not assume that the phrase “HDMI 2.1” by itself confirms every capability, or that every port on a TV supports the same features. Target’s guide identifies these as useful gaming features, while Roku’s product information shows refresh rates and port capabilities vary by series (Target; Roku TV product information).
Input lag is another useful comparison when reliable testing is available. TechRadar reports 13.2 ms at 4K/60 Hz in Game mode for the particular model covered on its 2026 guide page; that figure is specific to that tested model and setting, not a general budget-TV benchmark (TechRadar’s TV guide).
How many HDMI ports and which audio connections do you need?
Count the devices you expect to connect at the same time: a game console, cable or satellite box, streaming device, disc player, and soundbar can quickly use available HDMI inputs. Check the features supported by each port, and note whether the eARC connection is on a port you also want to use for gaming.
Manufacturer listings show why the individual specification sheet matters. LG lists three HDMI 2.0 ports, eARC, and ALLM for its 2025 55UA7000PUB model. That is an example for that exact model, not a specification to assume for other LG TVs or other regions (LG’s 55UA7000PUB specifications).
If you plan to use a soundbar, confirm that its connection requirements match the TV’s audio outputs and eARC support. Do not assume a TV’s built-in speakers or audio connections will suit your setup without checking the specific model.

Does the smart TV platform have the apps and HDR formats you use?
Check the built-in platform for the streaming apps and services your household actually uses. Availability can differ by platform, model, and market. Also match supported HDR formats to your streaming devices and services: support varies across product families. Roku’s official product information lists display and HDR distinctions by series, while LG lists HDR10 Pro for the 55UA7000PUB (Roku TV product information; LG’s 55UA7000PUB specifications).
How do you confirm you are comparing the right model?
Similar product names can refer to TVs with different specifications. Match the full model code on the retailer listing to the manufacturer’s product page for the country where you will buy it. Confirm the size, year, native refresh rate, HDMI port count and capabilities, HDR formats, dimensions and stand placement, and warranty for that market. A feature listed for one size or regional version does not prove it is present on another.
Prices, inventory, and availability change quickly, and the specifications alone do not establish which model is the best buy at a given moment. Compare current listings only after confirming the exact SKU and the terms for returns and warranty service.
How should you compare two budget 55-inch TVs?
Use the factors that matter to your room and setup as comparison points, rather than choosing by a single badge or resolution label.
- Price after discounts and the retailer’s return terms
- Measured SDR and HDR brightness, reflection handling, and contrast or backlight approach
- Viewing angle, motion handling, and upscaling quality
- Native refresh rate, input lag where tested, and gaming support by HDMI input
- Number and capability of HDMI ports, including eARC placement
- HDR formats, smart platform, and app availability in your market
- Overall dimensions, stand fit, and warranty
There is no single best choice for every room and budget. A bright room, a console setup, and a household that mostly streams shows may each make different specifications more important.
