Before you bid on a rare LEGO set, verify the exact set, define what the lot contains, test every completeness and authenticity claim against photographs or inspection, and calculate the all-in cost under that auction’s terms. “Sealed,” “complete,” and “unchecked” are not interchangeable. A set number identifies the intended product, but it does not prove that the physical lot contains the right parts. Treat anything you cannot verify as risk when setting your maximum bid.
Start with the exact set identity
Rare LEGO sets can have similar names, multiple editions, regional packaging, or related releases. The set number is the most useful identity key. LEGO’s official customer-service guidance says numbers are used to identify sets quickly, and that number can lead you to the official set page, building instructions, and replacement-piece information.

Ask for the set number
Do not rely only on a title such as “vintage space set” or “classic castle collection.” Ask the auctioneer to confirm the complete set number and compare it with every identifying detail visible in the lot:
- the number printed on the box;
- the number shown on the instruction booklet;
- the model pictured in the catalogue;
- any number printed on storage packaging or paperwork; and
- the parts, minifigures, or accessories that distinguish that release.
If the number appears only in a catalogue description and nowhere in the photographs, ask why. An official instruction manual is useful for checking the model’s intended parts and assemblies, but an instruction reference does not prove that those parts are physically present in the auction lot.

Confirm the edition represented by the lot
Record the exact number, name, packaging version, and any stated release or edition information before comparing prices. Do not compare a sealed original package with a later reissue, a used set, or a loose collection merely because the names look similar.
Translate condition labels into testable claims
Auction descriptions often use short labels that hide important differences. BrickLink’s published condition guidance is useful vocabulary, but it does not automatically govern an unrelated auction house or guarantee the truth of a catalogue description.
| Label | What the label can communicate | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed | BrickLink defines a sealed new set as having intact factory seals, with contents presumed sealed, intact, complete, and untampered with as shipped. | Whether the seals are genuinely factory seals, whether the box has been opened or re-sealed, and whether the contents are actually complete. BrickLink expressly says, “The seller cannot guarantee that a sealed set is complete.” |
| Complete | For a used set, BrickLink’s definition covers all parts needed for the models in the instructions and the original stickers. | Whether minifigures, printed elements, sticker sheets, instructions, accessories, box, and extra parts are included. Packaging and extra parts are not necessarily part of a used-complete definition. |
| Incomplete | The lot should identify missing contents. | Whether the missing-item list is specific enough to price replacement parts and whether other omissions remain undisclosed. |
| Unchecked | The seller or auction house has not established completeness or correctness. | Assume the contents are unknown until you receive evidence. Do not treat an assembled model or a full-looking box as proof. |
When a catalogue says “unchecked for completeness or correctness,” read that literally. It means the lot has not been verified against the intended inventory. The uncertainty belongs in your valuation, not in an optimistic assumption that the set is complete.
Check what the lot actually includes
“The set” may mean the bricks only, or it may include figures, instructions, stickers, the original box, alternate builds, and accessories. Ask the auctioneer to state the inclusion list in writing and match it to the photographs.

Minifigures and character parts
Minifigures can be a large part of a rare set’s identity and value. Ask for a count and for close images of each figure, including distinctive hair, helmets, capes, tools, weapons, animals, and printed torsos or legs. BrickLink’s marketplace policy says a set without its minifigures must be listed as incomplete on that marketplace. That policy is a useful prompt for questions, not a rule that determines how an unrelated auction house labels its lots.
Printed, stickered, and decorated elements
Request sharp photographs of printed tiles, windscreens, panels, decorated minifigure parts, and any piece carrying a set-specific graphic. Ask whether original stickers are applied, unused on a sheet, damaged, or absent. A used set described as complete under BrickLink’s vocabulary includes original stickers, but an auction’s own definition may differ.
Instructions, accessories, and alternate models
Confirm the number and language of instruction booklets, supplements, posters, gear, tools, stands, and other accessories shown in the official instructions. If the set supports alternate models, ask whether the lot contains the parts needed for each model or only the primary build. A box and manual can survive after parts have been removed, so do not use their presence as a substitute for an inventory check.

Ask whether the original box is included, whether it is crushed, torn, water-marked, or repaired, and whether internal bags or trays remain sealed. Packaging condition matters to collectors but does not establish that the pieces inside are correct or complete.

Separate authenticity evidence from condition evidence
A clean box, a LEGO logo, an assembled model, or a confident seller description can support an identification, but none alone proves that every component is genuine or that the lot has not been altered. BrickLink prohibits counterfeit items, including replica boxes and photocopied instructions, in its marketplace. That platform rule is not an authentication of an individual auction lot.
Ask for lot-specific proof
- Request high-resolution images of the box seals, corners, labels, instruction covers, and unusual elements.
- Ask where the set came from and whether the seller has purchase records, collection history, or other provenance.
- Compare the photographs with the official model and instructions for the stated set number.
- Ask the auctioneer to disclose replaced, reproduced, or non-original parts, packaging, and paperwork.
- Write down every item that remains unverified instead of converting uncertainty into a positive assumption.
If authenticity materially affects your maximum bid, require evidence before bidding or price the lot as an uncertain acquisition. A marketplace’s anti-counterfeit policy does not transfer its enforcement or remedies to another seller or auction house.
Use inspection and photographs intelligently
Wide photographs establish that a box or model exists; they rarely establish the condition of small parts. Ask for lot-specific images rather than stock images or pictures of a similar set.
What to request remotely
- One image showing the complete lot together, so objects cannot be quietly omitted from a detail shot.
- Close-ups of every seal, label, serial or set number, and visible opening point.
- Separate images of minifigures, printed pieces, stickers, instruction pages, and accessories.
- Photographs of loose contents spread out when the lot is open or built.
- A statement identifying anything the photographer could not inspect.
What to check in person
At a preview, compare the physical set number with the catalogue, look for opened or re-taped packaging, and inspect whether loose parts appear to belong to the stated model. Do not dismantle a sealed package or disturb a display without the auctioneer’s permission. If the preview does not permit a meaningful check, record that limitation and treat the lot as unverified.

Read the actual auction terms before choosing a bid
The auction house, country, and jurisdiction determine the enforceable terms. Do not assume that a policy from a LEGO marketplace describes your rights in an auction.
| Term to locate | Question to answer before bidding |
|---|---|
| Buyer’s premium | What percentage or fixed charge is added to the hammer price, and is it taxable? |
| Taxes | Which sales, VAT, import, or other taxes apply to your location and the seller’s location? |
| Payment deadline | When is payment due, which methods are accepted, and are late fees charged? |
| Shipping or collection | Is shipping available, who arranges it, what packing charge applies, and how long can the lot be collected? |
| Inspection access | Can you inspect before bidding, and what information does the auction house guarantee? |
| Returns and disputes | Are returns excluded, and what procedure applies if the lot materially differs from the description? |
BrickLink’s terms state that the platform is not a party to transactions between its buyers and sellers and disclaims control over listing accuracy and transaction completion. That is a BrickLink-specific limitation, not a statement about an unnamed auction house’s contract or your local consumer law.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Calculate an all-in bid ceiling
Set your maximum before the auction begins. Bidding emotionally against a low opening price can make a supposedly rare bargain cost more than a verified example.
- Find comparable evidence. Compare the same set number in a similar state: sealed, opened and complete, incomplete, or unchecked. Match the contents, box condition, authenticity evidence, and region as closely as possible.
- Choose a personal all-in limit. Decide what the lot is worth to you after considering uncertainty, not just what a catalogue estimate suggests.
- Add every sale cost. Include the buyer’s premium, applicable taxes, shipping or collection expense, insurance, and any handling charge stated in the terms.
- Account for identifiable replacements. If the listing names missing pieces, estimate those parts and any specialist shipping. Do not pretend that unknown omissions have zero cost.
- Convert the limit into a hammer-price ceiling. Your maximum bid must leave room for all charges so that the final invoice stays below your all-in limit.
A simple worksheet is:
all-in cost = hammer price + buyer’s premium + taxes + shipping/collection + expected replacement parts + other stated charges

No set number, dated comparable sale, buyer’s-premium rate, jurisdiction, or current market value has been established here, so a responsible numeric bid ceiling cannot be supplied. Use the actual sale terms and evidence for the specific lot.
Compare lots on the same risk scale
Do not rank a sealed lot, an opened complete lot, and an unchecked box as if they offered the same contents. Use a side-by-side worksheet with these fields:
| Comparison axis | Questions to record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Is the exact set number and edition confirmed by the box, instructions, and photographs? |
| State | Is it factory sealed, opened, built, loose, or explicitly unchecked? |
| Completeness | Are parts, minifigures, stickers, instructions, accessories, alternate models, and extra parts addressed separately? |
| Packaging | What box, bag, tray, and label condition is documented? |
| Authenticity | What provenance and lot-specific evidence exists, and what remains unverified? |
| Inspection and remedies | Can you inspect, return, or claim a material discrepancy under the sale terms? |
| Total cost | What is the all-in amount after premium, taxes, shipping, and likely replacements? |
The better lot is not automatically the one with the strongest label. It is the one whose identity, contents, authenticity, and final cost are supported by evidence you can verify.
Recognize stop signs before the auction starts
- The set number is missing, inconsistent, or visible only in an unverified catalogue entry.
- The description says “rare” or “vintage” but does not identify the exact release.
- “Sealed” is used without clear images of every factory seal.
- “Complete” does not say whether minifigures, stickers, instructions, or accessories are included.
- The lot is explicitly unchecked, yet the asking estimate assumes a verified complete set.
- Photographs are too wide or too dark to inspect distinctive parts.
- The auctioneer refuses to answer whether reproduced packaging or paperwork is present.
- Buyer’s premium, taxes, shipping, payment deadline, or dispute rules are unavailable.
- The total cost would exceed your ceiling if even one stated omission requires replacement.
Any one of these may be a reason to ask another question; several together justify passing on the lot.
A practical pre-bid workflow
- Copy the lot number, exact set number, edition description, and catalogue wording into your notes.
- Download or view the official instructions for that set and list the identifying figures, decorated elements, stickers, and accessories.
- Ask the auction house to confirm what is physically included and what “sealed,” “complete,” or “unchecked” means in its own conditions.
- Request close, lot-specific photographs and provenance information. Save the replies with the lot record.
- Inspect in person when possible, or mark every feature that could not be inspected remotely.
- Read the complete conditions of sale, including fees, taxes, payment, delivery, inspection, returns, and discrepancy procedures.
- Gather comparable examples with matching condition and contents. Exclude comparisons that do not match the risk profile.
- Calculate the all-in cost at several possible hammer prices and write down your maximum before bidding.
- Stop if a material question remains unanswered and the uncertainty cannot be reflected in your ceiling.
Keep a written evidence trail
Save the catalogue page, photographs, messages, inspection notes, and the version of the conditions of sale that applied when you bid. Record which claims were verified, which were supplied by the seller without supporting images, and which were explicitly unknown. This record helps you make a disciplined decision and gives you the clearest basis for a discrepancy claim if the contract allows one.
The central rule is simple: identify the exact set, define the contents, verify what can be verified, price what cannot, and let the auction’s actual terms—not a reassuring label—determine your maximum bid.
