Start by listing every device, its essential job, update status, failure risk and actual bottleneck. Then compare a targeted repair with a replacement that meets the same need, including support life, accessories, warranty and resale value. Spend on one high-impact action, reassess what remains usable, and only then move to the next device.
Start with a device-and-risk inventory
Put every phone, tablet, laptop, desktop and specialist device on one list. The purpose is to decide what must work reliably, not to rank products by age or prestige.

Education-device guidance from the Department for Education in England uses a similar starting point: assess how devices are used, who uses them, their physical requirements and the support they need. That framework is useful for a household or small business, but its formal requirements apply to schools and colleges in England, not consumers everywhere.

1. Score consequence and frequency
Give each device a simple 1-to-5 score for task importance, frequency of use and harm if it fails. A phone that authenticates financial accounts daily may outrank a faster laptop used for occasional video editing. A rarely used tablet with a cracked screen may wait if a laptop performs the same job.

2. Add the security multiplier
Move a device up the list when it remains connected, stores sensitive information or controls access to other accounts but no longer receives security patches. Verify support for the exact model with its manufacturer; an advertised product-family policy may not cover every regional variant.
3. Identify the bottleneck, not the symptom
“Slow” can mean insufficient memory, failing storage, thermal throttling, a nearly full drive, a battery that forces power-saving mode or software that the device cannot run. “It dies quickly” can mean battery wear, a bad charger, a damaged port or an app using excessive power. Diagnose before ordering a part.
4. Consider alternatives already in the house
If another supported device can perform the essential task, a lower-priority unit can be repaired later, repurposed or sold. If no backup exists, reliability deserves more weight than raw specifications.
Check support and security before spending
Age alone is not an upgrade rule. A well-supported device with one replaceable fault can be a better purchase than a newer model that is already incompatible with required software.

As a clearly scoped benchmark, current Department for Education guidance for schools and colleges in England specifies at least five years of support and security patches for laptops and desktops and three years for tablets. Those figures describe that institutional setting and are not a guarantee for consumer devices, phones or products sold in another country.
- Find the exact model number and region.
- Check the manufacturer’s security-bulletin or update page.
- Record the last patch date and any announced end date.
- Confirm that required applications still support the operating-system version.
- Check whether a replacement part, charger or accessory will remain available during the device’s expected service period.
A device past support may still be suitable for an offline, low-risk task, but it should not be the sole keeper of sensitive files, authentication codes or business data.
Repair or replace? Compare like with like
Get a written diagnosis and quote before deciding. Compare the repair with a replacement that can actually perform the same essential task; comparing a repair with the cheapest incompatible product produces a false saving.

Asurion describes spending less than about half the replacement cost as a rule of thumb for choosing professional repair when the device still meets your needs. It is a provider’s starting point, not a universal break-even law. Include the repair warranty, remaining support, likely future faults and the cost of required accessories.

Match the fix to the device
Phones
Battery and screen replacements are common repair paths. Before replacing a battery, check battery-health information, charging-cable and port condition, background-app usage and whether the phone is receiving security updates. A new battery cannot make an unsupported phone safe for sensitive accounts.
Apple states: “All rechargeable batteries are consumables and have a limited lifespan – eventually their capacity and performance decline and they need to be replaced.” For iPhone models, Apple says replacement may be available through Apple or authorized repair channels depending on location, and warns that untrained technicians or non-genuine parts can affect safety or function. This guidance applies to iPhones, not every phone.
Tablets
A screen repair can restore a tablet used for reading or point-of-sale work, while an old tablet that no longer receives patches may be better relegated to offline media or replaced. Confirm touch-panel, stylus, keyboard and charging-accessory compatibility before approving a repair.

RAM upgrades can help when memory pressure—not a failing drive, processor limit or thermal problem—is the actual bottleneck. Verify the exact model’s maximum memory, module type, accessible slots and operating-system limits. Many thin laptops have soldered memory, so a generic “laptop RAM upgrade kit” is not automatically compatible.

A battery swap can extend a supported laptop’s mobile life. If the machine is slow because its storage is failing, replacing the drive and restoring a tested backup may matter more than adding memory. A professional diagnostic is worthwhile when symptoms overlap.
Chargers and batteries
Parts and service availability vary by model and location. Google recommends using the supplied power adapter or consulting the device manufacturer for a suitable charger, and suggests reducing screen brightness, restricting high-use apps and enabling Battery Saver for Android devices. Menu names and options vary by Android version and manufacturer. Stop using a battery that is swollen, hot, leaking or physically damaged and seek qualified service.
Calculate total cost of ownership
Write the full first-year cost beside every option:
- Purchase or repair price, including tax and labor.
- Required charger, keyboard, storage, case, dock or software.
- Shipping, data transfer and setup time.
- Warranty length and what it excludes.
- Expected supported years and realistic performance after the spend.
- Value of retaining the old device as a backup, trade-in or resale item.
A used-device marketplace can provide a reality check on current prices. Swappa’s guidance recommends using current used-market values as one input to repair decisions. Listings change by model, storage, condition, carrier status and location, so compare several current listings and verify buyer protection and return terms rather than treating one asking price as guaranteed value.

Use a repeatable purchase sequence
- Document the baseline. Photograph model labels, back up data and record battery health, storage use, patch date and the exact failure.
- Verify support. Check the manufacturer’s page for that model and region, then list the applications that must continue working.
- Run low-cost checks. Free storage, install pending updates, test another known-good charger, inspect ports and run the operating system’s memory, storage and battery diagnostics.
- Request a written repair quote. Ask what part is failing, whether the replacement is genuine or compatible, the labor cost, warranty and what other faults were found.
- Price a suitable replacement. Match required performance, ports, cellular or Wi-Fi capability, operating system, support period and included accessories.
- Choose one action. Select the repair or purchase with the greatest reduction in risk and disruption per dollar, not the flashiest specification.
- Reassess after the fix. Confirm the original task works, install security updates, test backups and update the inventory before funding another device.
Examples of how the order changes
Supported laptop, worn battery
If the laptop runs required software, receives patches and is otherwise reliable, a battery service can restore mobility at a fraction of a replacement’s total cost. A memory upgrade should be considered only after diagnostics show sustained memory pressure and the model accepts additional RAM.
Unsupported phone used for authentication
Even if its screen and battery are acceptable, the phone’s lack of security updates and its role in account access make replacement a higher priority. Move authentication and backups only after confirming the new device works.
Cracked tablet with a working laptop alternative
When the tablet is nonessential and the laptop covers the same task, defer the repair. If the tablet is needed for an accessibility tool, field form or dedicated control, price that specific repair against a replacement with matching compatibility.
Several faults on an old desktop
A failing drive plus random shutdowns and unsupported software is not a single-part decision. Preserve data, obtain a diagnosis and compare the combined repair risk with a supported replacement; do not spend on RAM first simply because it is easy to install.
Mistakes that waste a limited budget
- Replacing by age alone: age says little about support, condition or task fit.
- Using a universal budget split: there is no evidence-based percentage that fits every household; risk and workload determine the order.
- Buying the cheapest replacement: a low price is irrelevant if the device lacks required software support, ports or accessibility features.
- Assuming every laptop accepts RAM: check soldered memory, generation and maximum capacity first.
- Ignoring data and account migration: back up before repair, and keep the old device until authentication, photos and files are verified on the replacement.
- Accepting a verbal quote: get the fault, part, labor, warranty and possible additional charges in writing.
- Counting a promotional or one-time price as normal: verify current local pricing, stock and service availability.
A practical decision checklist
Approve the first spend only when you can answer yes to these questions:
- Does this action restore or protect an essential, frequently used task?
- Will the exact model remain supported for the period I need?
- Have I identified the actual bottleneck rather than guessing?
- Did I compare the complete repair cost with a suitable replacement?
- Will the device be safe, compatible and reliable after the work?
- Have I included accessories, warranty, setup and data-transfer costs?
- Can another device cover the task if the repair fails or takes longer?
The best first purchase is therefore the smallest defensible spend that removes the largest operational or security risk. Once that device is stable and backed up, the same inventory, support check and like-for-like cost comparison gives you a rational order for everything else.
