What to Bring to Watch the Northern Lights Outdoors

Bring a clothing system matched to the local forecast, a low-impact light, and enough food and warmth for a potentially long wait. Add a blanket, hot drink, and snacks for comfort. A camera, tripod, and spare batteries are optional for photography—not requirements for seeing the aurora.

Start with the conditions you will actually face

Aurora viewing is usually a waiting activity. You may stand outside, sit in a vehicle or shelter, and move between a parking area and an open viewpoint while the display changes. Pack for the cold, wind, precipitation and ground conditions in your specific location, not for a generic temperature printed on a jacket.

Alaska-focused advice is especially useful for winter trips, but it is not a universal temperature rating. A viewer in a milder climate may need fewer insulating layers, while a windy, wet or remote site can demand more protection than the thermometer suggests. Your expected time outside matters as much as the forecast: a short walk from a warm vehicle requires less equipment than several hours beside an exposed lake or trail.

Before packing, identify whether the outing is a casual roadside stop or a backcountry trip. For a remote outing, research the activity and test every important item before leaving. Alaska National Park Service guidance warns that changing weather and extreme cold can turn a small equipment problem into a serious one.

Build a clothing system in three layers

Layering lets you adjust as wind, activity and waiting time change. The exact thickness is local and personal; the structure below is the reliable starting point for cold-weather viewing.

Layer What it does What to choose
Base layer Moves moisture away from skin so damp fabric does not leave you chilled while waiting. Moisture-wicking long underwear or another quick-drying material.
Insulating layer Traps heat when you are standing still. Fleece, wool or another warm mid-layer sized to fit under the outer shell.
Outer layer Blocks wind and protects inner layers from precipitation. A windproof outer garment appropriate for the forecast; add waterproof protection when rain or wet snow is possible.

Protect hands, head and face

Pack insulated mittens or gloves suited to the expected cold. Mittens generally keep fingers together, but the best choice is the one that lets you operate your phone, vehicle and light safely without exposing your hands for long. Alaska backcountry guidance specifically calls for waterproof gloves; use that level of protection when snow or wet conditions are expected.

Wear a warm winter hat that covers the ears. Add a face covering or neck gaiter when wind makes exposed skin uncomfortable. These small items are easy to carry and can determine whether you stay long enough to see a display.

Choose footwear for terrain, not just temperature

Insulated boots are a sensible cold-weather default, but the correct pair depends on snow, ice, mud, distance and the surface at your viewing site. Prioritize insulation, weather protection and secure footing. Comfortable footwear is particularly important when the plan includes a walk from a parking area or a long stationary wait. The available guidance does not establish one universal boot rating, so do not treat a single temperature number as a guarantee.

Add warmth and comfort for a long wait

Pack a blanket even if you expect to return to a vehicle. It can cover your legs during a stationary wait, provide an extra layer over clothing or make a short break outdoors more comfortable. A thermos or other hot drink helps maintain comfort, and snacks are useful when the wait extends past your normal meal time.

Hand and toe warmers are optional additions mentioned in Alaska travel guidance. They can supplement, but should not replace, dry layers, insulated footwear and appropriate gloves. Keep clothing and spare warmth dry; damp insulation loses much of its usefulness.

Plan where you will wait before arriving. A dark place with a broad view of the sky is preferable, but it must also be a safe place to park, stand and walk. Avoid setting up where vehicles cannot see you, where ice creates an obvious fall hazard or where access is prohibited. For a backcountry trip, confirm the route and conditions with the responsible land manager and test unfamiliar gear at home.

Use light that protects night vision

Bring a red headlamp or another red light for setup and walking. The National Park Service recommends red or green light because it helps preserve night vision; red is a practical choice for a hands-free headlamp. Use the lowest useful brightness and point the beam at the ground when moving so you do not distract other viewers.

A low-impact light is not a substitute for safe access. Keep it available for finding keys, checking footing and returning to your vehicle. Test the headlamp before departure and carry its required batteries. If you use a phone as a light, its bright white screen can temporarily reduce your ability to see faint features, so dim it before looking back at the sky.

Check both kinds of forecast before leaving

An aurora-activity forecast cannot make a cloudy sky clear. Check the local cloud and weather forecast as well as the solar or aurora forecast, then choose a dark location with an unobstructed view. Cloud cover, precipitation, wind and changing temperatures affect whether you can comfortably see anything even when solar activity is favorable.

Timing depends on latitude, season and local conditions. The University of Alaska Fairbanks describes 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. as a typical higher-probability window for spectacular aurora in Interior Alaska during winter. That regional guidance should not be applied automatically to every destination. NASA notes that auroras often maximize around midnight but can appear across a broader span, so an early quiet period is not proof that the night is over.

Moonlight can make dim features harder to see and can change how colors appear. A bright moon is not the same as cloud cover, but it is another reason to set expectations realistically. Displays vary in duration and brightness; patience is part of the outing, and a first attempt may not succeed.

Photography is optional

You do not need a camera or tripod to enjoy the aurora. Bring photography equipment only if recording the display is one of your goals.

For a camera

  • Pack a stable tripod so a long exposure does not blur from hand movement.
  • Carry spare camera batteries and keep them warm in an inside pocket; cold reduces battery power.
  • A remote release or timer can reduce movement when you press the shutter, as recommended in Alaska travel guidance.

For a phone

A phone with a night mode may be sufficient for casual photographs. Bring a phone battery pack if you expect prolonged use, and keep the pack and phone as warm as practical. Cold can shorten battery life, so do not leave your only power source exposed on a snowbank or in an outside pocket.

Photography changes the packing list, not the visibility requirement. A tripod, spare power and a camera improve your ability to record a display; they do not make an aurora more likely or necessary to see one.

Pack by priority

Priority Pack Why it matters
Essential for a cold outing Moisture-wicking base layer, insulating layer, windproof outer layer, insulated boots, mittens or gloves, warm hat and face covering. Protects against the local cold, wind and moisture during an extended wait.
Comfort and endurance Blanket, snacks, hot drink or thermos, and optional hand or toe warmers. Makes a long stationary wait manageable.
Seeing and moving safely Red headlamp or red light, plus a preselected safe parking and viewing place. Supports night vision and reduces trip, traffic and navigation risks.
Optional photography Camera or night-mode phone, stable tripod, remote or timer, spare batteries or phone power bank. Helps capture images without making equipment a condition of viewing.

A practical pre-departure sequence

  1. Read the local forecast. Note temperature, wind, precipitation and cloud cover for the hours you expect to be outside.
  2. Check aurora activity separately. Treat activity and cloud forecasts as two different gates: favorable activity still requires a sufficiently clear sky.
  3. Choose a dark, legal and safe site. Confirm access, parking, walking surfaces and a clear view rather than stopping wherever the sky first looks open.
  4. Set your clothing aside as a complete system. Include the base, insulation, windproof outer layer, boots, handwear, hat and face covering. Do not rely on a forgotten item being available at the destination.
  5. Prepare comfort supplies. Fill the thermos, pack food and place the blanket where it can be reached without unpacking everything.
  6. Test the light. Check the red headlamp, brightness setting and batteries before dark.
  7. Prepare optional camera power. Charge the phone or camera, pack the tripod and timer or remote, and put spare batteries or the power bank in an inside pocket.
  8. Reassess if conditions change. If the route becomes unsafe, weather worsens or your clothing is inadequate, shorten the outing rather than treating a forecast as a promise.

Adjust the list to the type of outing

Casual roadside viewing

For a short drive to an established viewpoint, concentrate on warm layers, secure boots, a red light, a blanket and refreshments. Keep photography simple if desired: a night-mode phone and its power pack may be all you want to carry. Confirm that the place is legal and safe for parking before you leave.

Extended stationary viewing

If you expect to remain outside for hours, favor extra insulation, dry spare layers and a blanket over a minimal day-trip load. Snacks and a hot drink reduce the temptation to end the wait solely because you are uncomfortable. Keep batteries and other cold-sensitive power sources warm.

Backcountry or remote viewing

Use the Alaska National Park Service approach as a baseline: research the activity, account for changing weather and test gear before the trip. Remote locations increase the consequences of a failed light, wet clothing or inadequate footwear. The aurora itself does not remove ordinary travel hazards, so choose equipment for the route and terrain as well as the sky.

Milder climates

Scale insulation to the actual forecast instead of copying an Alaska winter outfit. Wind, rain and the length of the wait may justify a shell, fleece or blanket even when the air temperature seems moderate. There is no single universal clothing or boot rating established for every viewing location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when the outing is not going well

The sky is cloudy

Do not assume stronger aurora activity will solve the problem. Recheck the local cloud forecast and consider whether a safer, clearer nearby location is available. If not, postponing is more sensible than extending an exposed wait.

You cannot see much color

Dim features, moonlight and individual night vision affect what appears visible. Move away from unnecessary white light, use the red headlamp only when needed and allow your eyes time to adjust. A camera may record detail that is difficult to see casually, but it is optional.

Your battery is falling quickly

Cold reduces battery power. Move spare camera batteries or the phone power bank into an inside pocket, limit bright-screen use and avoid making the phone your only navigation or light source.

You are getting cold or the route is unsafe

End the viewing session or return to a warm vehicle. A display can last only briefly, while cold injury and a fall can have lasting consequences. Replan with better layers, safer access or a shorter exposure time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shortest reliable packing list

For most outdoor aurora outings, start with forecast-appropriate layers, insulated footwear, hand and head protection, a red light, a blanket, water or a hot drink, and snacks. Add a camera setup only when photography matters. Check cloud and aurora forecasts, select a dark safe location, and leave room in the plan for waiting—or for turning back when conditions are not safe.
