What to Bring to a Polling Place—and What to Leave at Home

Before heading to vote in person, check your state or local election office’s current instructions, bring any identification it requires, and consider carrying paper notes if you need a reminder. Rules for phones, ballot photos, and campaign items vary by location, so do not assume a rule from another state applies to your polling place.

What to bring with you

Identification required in your state

Voter ID rules are not uniform. Arizona says voters must present either one qualifying photo ID or two qualifying items from its other approved lists. California says most voters do not need to show ID, with a limited exception for certain first-time voters who registered by mail. In Michigan, a voter who lacks or forgot photo ID can sign an affidavit and cast a ballot. Check your own election office’s guidance for accepted documents and any fallback procedure.

Paper notes or a sample ballot

A printed sample ballot, candidate guide, or handwritten list can help you remember your choices without relying on a phone. North Carolina says voters may bring “voting guides, notes, and other materials into the voting booth.” California also says voters may bring sample ballots and similar explanatory materials. These are state examples, not a guarantee that every polling place follows the same rules; check local instructions before bringing materials into the booth.

Accessibility and personal needs

If you need an accessibility aid or another personal item to vote, ask your local election office what is permitted at your specific polling place. The state guidance cited here does not establish a nationwide rule for medication, bags, food, water, or every accessibility-related item.

What to do about your phone

Phone rules vary, and carrying a phone is not the same as being allowed to use it in the voting area. North Carolina permits electronic devices for candidate information under stated limits, while Texas bars wireless-device use in the room where voting occurs. If you plan to use your phone to check choices, confirm the rule for your location first; otherwise, write your notes on paper. Silence the phone and follow posted directions or poll-worker instructions.

Leave ballot photos and recording alone unless local rules clearly allow them

Do not assume you can photograph your ballot or record inside a polling place. North Carolina prohibits photographing or videotaping a voted ballot. Texas prohibits recording images or sound within 100 feet of a voting station. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a national rule. If you are unsure whether a photo or recording is allowed where you vote, do not make one and ask an election official.

See the North Carolina FAQ and Texas FAQ.

Keep campaign items out of restricted areas

Campaign clothing, accessories, and flyers may be prohibited in or near a polling place. Michigan advises voters not to wear campaign clothing or accessories and not to bring campaign flyers within 100 feet of a polling place. Check your local rules before arriving in campaign gear, and follow directions from election officials if they ask you to cover or remove an item.

A quick check before you leave

  • Look up your state or local election office’s current polling-place instructions.
  • Bring the ID required where you vote, or know the local alternative if you do not have it.
  • Use paper notes or a sample ballot if helpful, after confirming booth rules.
  • Silence your phone; do not use it, photograph a ballot, or record unless local rules permit it.
  • Leave campaign gear and flyers at home if your jurisdiction restricts them.
  • Ask the local election office about medication, bags, food, water, and accessibility-related items.

The examples above reflect official guidance for Arizona, California, North Carolina, Texas, and Michigan as reviewed on October 4, 2026; they are not a fifty-state survey. Rules can change, so your state or local election office is the authority for the instructions at your polling place.
