Most California voters do not need identification to vote in person. Before you go, confirm your polling-place address and hours; bring your vote-by-mail ballot if you received one and want to vote in person. If your name is missing from the voter list, ask a poll worker about a provisional ballot.
What should you bring?
- Your vote-by-mail ballot, if you have one. You can surrender an unused ballot in exchange for a polling-place ballot, or return a completed, sealed ballot at the polling place.
- Identification only if the state says it is required for you. Most California voters do not need ID. The Secretary of State says, “In most cases, a California voter is not required to show identification to a polling place worker before casting a ballot.” See the state’s What to Bring to Your Polling Place page.
- Your sample ballot booklet, if useful. It can help you review your choices and find your polling-place address. It is not a general ID requirement.
Statewide guidance does not say you need to bring a particular pen, voting accessory, or other purchased item.

Will you need to show ID?
California’s exception is narrow: a first-time voter in a federal election who registered by mail or online and did not provide the specified California driver-license or state-ID number, or the last four digits of a Social Security number, may be asked to show identification. The June 2, 2026 primary guide says affected voters will be notified in advance and poll workers may request ID only when the voter list indicates it is required. Check the Secretary of State’s California Voter ID & Registration Requirements for the guide’s details.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf the exception applies, the June 2026 guide says the document may have a photo or not, need not show your address, and need not be government-issued. Examples include a California driver license or state ID, U.S. passport, student or military ID, government-agency mail, a paycheck or government check, a utility bill, or a bank statement. These are examples, not a complete list; consult the state’s polling-place ID guidance for the authoritative standards.

How to find your polling place and hours
Your county sample ballot booklet lists the polling-place address on its back page. You can also use the state’s My Voter Status service to check your voter status and find a polling place or vote center. If you cannot locate the information, contact your county elections office or call the state voter hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683). The Secretary of State’s Where and How to Vote page gives additional guidance.
State voter-rights guidance says polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. Check your county’s voter guide for the date and location for your election, since election details vary by county and election.

What to expect when you arrive
Polling-place check-in steps and voting equipment are not identical across California counties. Follow the poll workers’ instructions and the directions provided with your local ballot or voting system. Poll workers can explain how to vote, including how to cast a provisional ballot; the state’s Voter Bill of Rights describes your statewide rights.
If your name is not on the voter list
Ask a poll worker for a provisional ballot rather than leaving without voting. It is a regular ballot placed in a special envelope. Election officials check whether you are registered in that county and have already voted in that election before counting it. If you vote outside your assigned polling place, only contests for which you are eligible are counted. See the Secretary of State’s Provisional Voting page.

If you requested a vote-by-mail ballot
You have options at the polling place:
- Return your completed, sealed vote-by-mail ballot.
- Exchange an unused vote-by-mail ballot for a polling-place ballot.
- If you do not have the mail ballot with you, ask a poll worker about voting provisionally. Officials count that ballot after checking registration and confirming that you have not voted twice.
Provisional voting may also be used when poll workers cannot verify the status of your mail ballot. The state explains the process on its Voting at a Polling Place after Applying to Vote by Mail page and in its poll-worker procedures.

The California Secretary of State’s June 2, 2026 primary guide says a voter who needs help marking a ballot may choose up to two people. They cannot be the voter’s employer, someone who works for the employer, a labor-union leader, or someone who works for the union. The guide also describes curbside voting, where election officials bring the roster, ballot, and necessary materials to a voter at the curb or in a car, and accessible voting machines. Contact your county elections office or consult the county voter guide for local arrangements. See the state guide’s assistance for voters with disabilities information.
