Bring comfortable walking shoes you have already worn, clothing suited to the forecast, and sun or rain protection as needed. Bring water only in line with your walk’s instructions. Before you leave, check the organizer’s current event information for route details, supplies, check-in requirements and rules: arrangements vary by walk.
What to wear
- Familiar walking shoes: Choose comfortable shoes you have already walked in rather than switching to new footwear on event day. Breast Cancer Now recommends good walking shoes for a sponsored walk.
- Weather-appropriate clothing: Wear comfortable clothes suited to the expected temperature and route. Add layers if conditions may change.
- Sun or rain protection: Bring a hat and sunscreen when sun exposure is likely, and a rain layer if showers are possible. Breast Cancer Now recommends a hat, sun cream and waterproofs for unpredictable British weather; the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s packing list likewise includes sunscreen, a hat and raingear when needed.
- Optional pink or event apparel: A touch of pink is a suggestion from Breast Cancer Now, not a universal requirement. The American Cancer Society promotes official Making Strides merchandise; follow your own organizer’s guidance if you want event apparel.
What to carry
Water, food and a bag
- Water bottle: Check whether the event provides water or refill points and whether participants are asked to bring a bottle. The Pink Ribbon Walk FAQ says refill points are available, recommends carrying water and notes that bottled water will not be provided. The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation also lists a reusable bottle. These are event-specific arrangements, not a policy shared by every walk.
- Food: Pack a snack or lunch if your organizer recommends it or the route makes it useful. The Pink Ribbon Walk FAQ recommends carrying lunch while also describing snack stations, illustrating why event instructions matter.
- Personal bag: Carry one only if you need it and the event permits it. Check any size or security restrictions before packing.
Check-in items
Bring the registration confirmation, walking number or identification only if your event’s instructions call for them. At the Pink Ribbon Walk, the walking number should be displayed visibly. The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s list includes government identification, a health card and a payment method; those are examples for that organizer, not universal requirements. Check whether a payment method is useful for your event before bringing one.

What to check before leaving
Use the walk’s current event page or final event pack as your day-of checklist. Confirm:

- Route distance and terrain, plus any accessibility information.
- Where water, food, toilets and rest stops are available.
- Check-in arrangements, parking, identification requirements and where to display your walking number.
- Weather guidance and whether the event proceeds in rain.
- Rules for bags, outside food, pets, umbrellas or other restricted items.
- Whether friends and family can reach the route or designated cheering points.
Route length and support are not consistent across walks. The American Cancer Society says Making Strides routes typically range from 2.5 to 5 miles depending on location. Other organizers publish their own route and event-day arrangements, so do not assume another walk’s distance, refreshments or rules apply to yours.
