Before jailbreaking a PS5 or attempting an alternate operating system, make three layers of protection: sync eligible saves to PlayStation Plus, create a complete PS5 backup on a separate FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, and copy captures and other records that the console backup does not cover. Also document games stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD, preserve your account credentials, and follow the modification’s own prerequisite instructions.
A standard PlayStation backup protects ordinary user data; it is not proven to preserve jailbreak files, encryption keys, licenses, exploit conditions, or a modified system state. PlayStation’s official documentation also does not promise that restoring a backup will undo a jailbreak, install an alternate OS, or downgrade firmware.

What the official PS5 backup actually protects
PlayStation’s built-in backup is the safest starting point because it can collect several categories in one operation. You can choose games and applications, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and system settings. The result is stored on a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
This is a console-level backup rather than a byte-for-byte image of every storage location. Two important exclusions apply:

- Games and applications stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are not copied into the PS5 console backup.
Because of those exclusions, a single USB operation should not be your only preparation. Treat the official backup, cloud saves, captures, external-drive inventory, and modification-specific files as separate tasks.
Complete the backup in the right order
1. Sync cloud saves first
If you have PlayStation Plus, let the console synchronize eligible saved data before you disconnect anything or alter system software. PS5 saves can use automatic cloud synchronization, while PS4 saves support automatic upload when the relevant rest-mode connection and automatic-update settings are enabled.
Open the saved-data controls and verify that the newest save has finished uploading; do not assume that an icon or a recent play session means synchronization completed. Cloud storage is a second copy of saved games, not a replacement for the full console backup: it does not contain your installed games, settings, captures, or every other category selected in the USB workflow.

- Connect a separate USB storage device that can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. PlayStation warns that not every USB device works, so confirm compatibility before relying on it.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the categories you want to preserve. Include games and applications, saved data, captures, and settings when you have enough space and want the broadest recovery option.
- Select Next, then Back Up. The console restarts to perform the backup and restarts again after completion.
- Wait for the completion screen. Do not unplug the drive, shut down the console, or interrupt the process; PlayStation warns that an interruption can cause data loss, corruption, or damage to the console or USB drive.
Use a drive with enough capacity for the categories you selected. Reliability, a compatible connection, and FAT32 or exFAT support matter more than a particular brand or model. A drive already formatted as USB extended storage for games should not be assumed to work as the backup destination; game-storage formatting and the console-backup requirement are different.
3. Copy captures separately
Screenshots and video clips can be copied to USB through the PS5’s media tools. Keep this step separate from the console backup so you have a directly accessible copy of important footage. PlayStation’s storage guidance says media copied to USB cannot be copied back from USB into console storage, so retain the files on a computer or another archive as well if you may need them later.

4. Update and record trophy status
Trophies are excluded from the full backup. Synchronize them with your PlayStation account while the console is still running its normal software, then record the date of the last successful synchronization. This does not create an offline trophy file; it confirms that the account service has the latest status before the system change.

Keep the account used for the backup
Backup data is linked to the PlayStation account. If you restore onto another PS5, you must sign in with the same account used to create the backup. Store the sign-in email and recovery method securely before beginning, and make sure you can complete any authentication challenge without relying on the console you are about to modify.

Write down which games and applications live on each USB extended-storage drive and on the M.2 SSD. Those installations are excluded from the console backup. PlayStation’s documented recovery approach is to reconnect the extended drive or reinstall the M.2 SSD in the restored console; the backup itself does not absorb those files.
Record the drive labels, the enclosure or adapter used, and which games require movement back to console or M.2 storage before they can run. Do not format, initialize, or repurpose those drives during the modification unless the project’s instructions explicitly require it and you have another copy of anything important.
Record settings that are easy to forget
The backup can include system settings, but a written record is useful if the alternate environment prevents an immediate restore. Note your display and audio configuration, network details, accessibility choices, controller pairings, parental restrictions, and any console-sharing arrangement. Save serial and model information with the record so you can identify the correct hardware during recovery.

What the official restore does—and does not do
The restore path is Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5. Select the USB drive and the backup data, then confirm. The console restarts for the restore and restarts again when it finishes.

Restoration is destructive to the console’s current contents. PlayStation states: “When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console.” Data that was not included in the backup, or that was created after the backup, cannot be recovered by this operation. Treat the restore as a wipe-and-repopulate process, not as a preview or a reversible test.
The software-version rule is equally important: the PS5’s current system software must be the same version or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. A restore is not documented as a firmware downgrade. It also is not documented as a way to roll back a jailbreak, remove an alternate OS, restore exploitability, or preserve modification-specific state.
After a restore, Console Sharing and Offline Play is disabled. Re-enable it in the system settings if you use that feature. If you restore to a different console, sign in with the account associated with the backup before expecting account-linked data to appear.
Choose the right storage method for each type of data

Jailbreak- and alternate-OS-specific preparation
The exact files needed depend on the exploit, firmware version, alternate OS, boot method, and hardware context. Official PlayStation support pages establish standard backup and restore behavior, not the file-level requirements of a particular modification. The project’s own documentation may require items such as configuration files, recovery images, keys, licenses, payloads, or logs; do not infer those requirements from the normal PS5 backup menu.

Before changing anything, read the modification documentation for your exact firmware and model, and preserve every prerequisite it names in a separate, clearly labeled archive. Keep checksums or version labels when the project supplies them. Never overwrite the only copy on the console or on the USB backup drive. If the documentation does not explain how a file is recovered, assume the standard PlayStation restore will not recreate it.
Do not confuse reset options
Restore default settings
Restore Default Settings changes visual and audio preferences and related settings without deleting user or game data. It is not a backup, a jailbreak-removal tool, or a substitute for recovery media.
Reset PS5
Reset PS5 deletes user data, game data, and personalized settings. PlayStation describes the action as irreversible. Do not select it while troubleshooting a modification unless you have verified your independent backups and understand what will be erased.
Failure modes to plan for
The backup drive is rejected
Check that the device is formatted FAT32 or exFAT, connected directly, and large enough for the selected categories. Try another compatible device if the PS5 still does not recognize it; PlayStation explicitly notes that not all USB devices work. Do not reformat a drive containing your only captures or modification files until those files exist elsewhere.

Run the operation again only after checking the cable, power stability, and available capacity. An interrupted backup is not proof that a usable archive exists. Keep the console powered on until the completion screen appears, then inspect the drive on another device only for confirmation; do not rename or alter the backup structure.
A restore cannot find the backup
Use the original USB drive and ensure the PS5 is running system software that is the same version or newer than the software present when the backup was created. For a different console, sign in with the original PlayStation account. If any of those conditions fail, the documented restore process may not be available.
