What to Ask Your Doctor Before Starting a Weight-Loss or Diabetes Medication

Before starting a weight-loss or diabetes medication, confirm exactly which product you’ll take, what it is intended to treat, how its benefits and risks apply to you, and what monitoring and follow-up it requires. Bring your complete medication list—including over-the-counter drugs and supplements—and ask the questions below. The answers should be specific to the product and your health history, not just its drug class.

Confirm the medicine’s purpose and expected benefit

Ask your prescriber what condition the medicine is intended to treat in your case and whether that use is approved for the exact product being prescribed. FDA-approved indications differ among medicines; an approval for one product does not automatically apply to another product with a similar ingredient or mechanism.

  • “What is this medicine intended to treat for me, and is that use FDA-approved for this exact product?”
  • “What benefit should we expect, how will we measure it, and when will we reassess?”
  • “If there are other reasonable options, how do they compare in benefits, risks, route, schedule, monitoring, pregnancy considerations, and cost or coverage?”

FDA explains that prescription labeling covers indications, contraindications, warnings and precautions, adverse reactions, and practical instructions. Those are useful categories for a discussion, not a way to decide which medicine is best for you. FDA: Frequently Asked Questions about Labeling for Prescription Medicines

Review your health history, other medicines, and allergies

Give your clinician a current list of prescriptions, nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Mention allergies, past medication reactions, and relevant diagnoses. Ask whether any condition or medicine could change the choice, dose, or safety plan.

  • “Could it interact with anything I take, or does another medicine’s dose need to change?”
  • “Are there medicines in the same class or with the same ingredient that I should not combine with it?”

For example, the current WEGOVY prescribing information says using WEGOVY with another semaglutide-containing product or another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended. It also warns that combining WEGOVY with insulin or an insulin secretagogue can increase hypoglycemia risk. These are WEGOVY-specific points; check the label for the medicine actually prescribed. Ask which side effects need action

Ask what effects are common with your exact medicine, which symptoms call for a prompt call, and which require urgent care. Find out whom to contact after hours and whether you should hold a dose while waiting for advice. Do not assume that warnings for one weight-loss or diabetes medication apply to another.

If you have diabetes, make a glucose-monitoring plan

Ask whether you need to check blood glucose before treatment and while taking the medicine, how often to check, and which readings or symptoms should prompt contact. If you use insulin or another medicine that stimulates insulin secretion, ask whether its dose may need adjustment. Do not change a dose on your own unless your care team has given you a specific plan.

For patients with diabetes, WEGOVY labeling calls for glucose monitoring before and during treatment and warns of increased hypoglycemia risk, including severe hypoglycemia, when used with insulin or an insulin secretagogue; dose reduction may be necessary. FDA’s ZEPBOUND approval announcement likewise advises patients using insulin or an insulin-secretion-stimulating medicine to discuss possible dose reduction with a healthcare provider. The appropriate monitoring and medication changes depend on your circumstances. WEGOVY prescribing information; FDA: ZEPBOUND approval announcement

Discuss pregnancy and planned procedures

Before starting, tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning pregnancy, or may become pregnant. Also tell the prescribing clinician and procedural team if you expect surgery, anesthesia, or deep sedation. Ask what applies to the exact medication and procedure; do not apply another medicine’s instructions or assume there is a universal schedule for stopping treatment.

For WEGOVY used for weight reduction and specified indications, the current label instructs stopping at least two months before a planned pregnancy because semaglutide has a long half-life. The label also reports pulmonary aspiration during general anesthesia or deep sedation with GLP-1 receptor agonists and says patients should inform healthcare providers about planned procedures. These are WEGOVY-specific instructions and warnings, not a general stop schedule for other medicines. WEGOVY prescribing information (2026 revision)

Make sure you know what product you will receive

Ask whether the medicine is an FDA-approved product, who will dispense it, and where to get product-specific instructions. If it is compounded, ask the compounder or supplying telehealth platform whom to contact about its dosing and labeling.

Its guidance directs patients with questions about instructions or labeling to the compounder or telehealth platform from which they obtained the medication. Do not assume a compounded version has FDA approval because it contains a similar ingredient. FDA: Compounded GLP-1 Drugs

Leave with a practical use and follow-up plan

Before the appointment ends, make sure you understand the instructions for the exact product you will use. Ask how to take or administer and store it, what to do after a missed dose, when follow-up is due, and how the clinician will decide whether treatment is working or needs to change.

  • “How do I use and store this exact product?”
  • “What should I do if I miss a dose?”
  • “When will we review benefits, side effects, and any monitoring results?”
  • “How should I contact the care team between visits?”

FDA’s prescription-medicine labeling guidance recommends talking with a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or pharmacist, when you have questions about a medicine. Product labels and safety communications can change, so confirm that instructions match the current labeling for your exact medicine.
