Before considering an experimental glioma treatment or clinical trial, bring your complete diagnosis and treatment record, then ask the neuro-oncology team to explain the study’s purpose, phase, eligibility rules, evidence, risks, practical demands, costs, and alternatives. A trial is an option to evaluate with your clinicians—not proof that a treatment works better than standard care.
Use this guide to prepare questions, compare choices, and find a current study. Your treating doctor and the trial team must review the current protocol and your individual health before anyone can determine eligibility or recommend a course of action.

Prepare the information your doctor and the trial team need
Clinical-trial eligibility is based on the exact protocol and on details that can be easy to overlook. Assemble a folder—paper or digital—before the appointment and ask a caregiver to help check it.

- Diagnosis: pathology report, glioma type and grade, anatomic location, dates of diagnosis and recurrence, and relevant imaging reports and scans.
- Tumor biology: molecular or genetic test results and the laboratory reports that identify the biomarkers used by the protocol.
- Treatment history: surgery and extent of resection, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted or immune treatments, dates, doses when available, responses, and reasons a treatment stopped.
- Current health: medication and supplement list, allergies, other medical conditions, seizures or neurologic symptoms, recent laboratory results, functional status, and any rehabilitation needs.
- Practical priorities: work, caregiving, transportation, language or accessibility needs, willingness to travel, and what quality-of-life goals matter most to you.
Ask the clinic which records it can obtain directly and which you must request. Bring a written question list and a support person if possible. A caregiver can take notes, track instructions, and ask about day-to-day effects that a short appointment may not cover.

Ask what the study is designed to learn
Start with the question NCI puts first in its clinical-trial checklist: “What is the objective of the trial?” The answer should tell you whether researchers are primarily studying safety, dose, how the treatment behaves in the body, signs of tumor response, or a comparison with another treatment. Ask what the study’s phase is and what that phase means for the amount and type of evidence available.
Questions about the rationale
- Why do the investigators think this treatment could help a tumor with my diagnosis or molecular profile?
- What evidence exists so far—laboratory findings, earlier participants, or other clinical data—and which conclusions cannot yet be drawn?
- What is still unknown about effectiveness, long-term effects, or risks?
- Is the protocol testing the treatment alone, with another treatment, or against a control or standard option?
Do not infer a likely benefit from a study listing or from an impressive mechanism. A trial can be scientifically important even when the treatment has no proven benefit for an individual participant.
Clarify whether you could qualify
Protocols use inclusion and exclusion criteria to define a specific patient group. They may require a particular glioma type or grade, measurable or recurrent disease, a biomarker, a minimum or maximum age, prior treatments, organ-function tests, a time interval since surgery or radiation, or limits on other medical conditions and medicines.
Ask the team to map your records to the protocol
- Which diagnosis, grade, molecular findings, prior treatments, or current-health details determine eligibility?
- Which scans, pathology reviews, laboratory tests, electrocardiograms, biopsies, or other records are required?
- Which criterion is uncertain in my case, and what additional information would resolve it?
- Who makes the final decision—the local clinician, a central trial physician, or both?
A coordinator can discuss likely eligibility, but that conversation is not a final acceptance. The trial physician may need to review records or examine you before enrollment. Ask whether screening tests are paid for and what happens if screening shows that you cannot enroll.

Compare the trial with standard care and other options
Ask your doctor to compare the actual choices available for your situation, not an experimental treatment in isolation. NCI advises asking what happens if you decline or delay a trial and what alternatives remain if it does not help.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Purpose and evidence | What is the trial trying to learn? What is known about this treatment compared with the standard option? |
| Personal fit | How do my tumor markers, prior treatments, age, and current health affect each option? |
| Benefits and harms | What benefits are plausible for someone like me? Which harms are known, and which are uncertain? |
| Burden | How are treatments given, how many visits and procedures are required, and how long does each option last? |
| Monitoring | How will response and side effects be checked, and what action follows an unfavorable result? |
| Cost and access | What does insurance cover, what might I pay, and is travel assistance available? |
| Future choices | What options remain if I do not enroll, if the trial closes, or if the treatment stops working? |
Ask, “What would you recommend if this trial were not available, and why?” A second opinion from a neuro-oncologist or a specialist at a cancer center can help when the decision is complex or the local team does not regularly see a particular tumor type.
Understand possible benefit, risk, and uncertainty
Ask for a discussion specific to your diagnosis and previous treatments rather than a general list of side effects. Separate what has been observed in people from what is only theoretically possible.

- What benefits are realistic to hope for, and how soon could they appear?
- Which side effects are common or expected, and which serious risks have occurred?
- What risks are especially relevant because of my tumor location, neurologic condition, medicines, or other illnesses?
- Could the treatment affect cognition, speech, mobility, seizures, fatigue, mood, work, or daily activities?
- Are there risks that may not be known until more people receive the treatment?
Ask how the team will prevent, detect, and manage complications, and whether supportive care or rehabilitation is available. Have the team write down which symptoms require an immediate call, which can wait for the next visit, and how to reach a clinician overnight, on weekends, and on holidays.

Get the practical treatment plan in writing
The protocol’s schedule can be more demanding than the treatment name suggests. Ask for a calendar that includes visits, scans, laboratory work, procedures, recovery time, and any restrictions.
Administration and visits
- How is the treatment delivered—infusion, injection, oral medicine, device, surgery, radiation, or a combination?
- Where would each part of care occur, and is there a closer participating site?
- How long is each visit, and how often would I need to come to the clinic or hospital?
- How long is the treatment period and the follow-up period after treatment ends?
Tests and response monitoring
- How often will MRI scans, laboratory tests, neurologic examinations, or other assessments occur?
- Does the protocol require a biopsy, lumbar puncture, hospital stay, or other invasive procedure?
- What result counts as benefit, stable disease, progression, or unacceptable toxicity?
- Who explains the results, and how quickly will decisions be made after a concerning scan or test?
Ask whether a caregiver must be present for treatment or transportation, whether you can drive, and how the schedule fits with work, school, caregiving, or rehabilitation.
Discuss timing, withdrawal, and what happens next
Ask how long you have to decide and when treatment would need to start. A protocol may have a narrow enrollment window, but you should still have time to understand consent documents and alternatives.
- What happens to my care if I do not join now?
- Can I take time for a second opinion or another pathology review?
- Can I stop participating at any point I choose? NCI includes that exact question in its checklist.
- If I stop, will I continue receiving follow-up or standard care at this clinic?
- What happens if the treatment is not working, the trial closes, or the sponsor changes the protocol?
Stopping participation may involve a final assessment or safety follow-up. Ask the coordinator to explain those steps before signing consent.

Check insurance, trial costs, and travel support
Request a written breakdown of expenses. Ask which costs are routine patient care—such as standard scans or visits—and which are caused by the experimental treatment or are paid by the study. Confirm how claims will be submitted and who pays if a complication requires care outside the study site.
- Which services will be billed to my insurance?
- Which services, drugs, tests, or procedures will the study pay for?
- What deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, or non-covered costs could remain?
- Are transportation, lodging, meals, parking, or a companion’s travel covered?
- Who can help resolve a billing dispute?
NCI says most insurance plans must cover routine patient-care costs in clinical trials, but coverage depends on the specific plan and case. An experimental treatment outside a trial may not be covered. Ask your insurer and the study team to confirm coverage before enrollment; do not rely on a general statement about insurance.
Find a current glioma trial without treating a listing as a recommendation
Begin with your treating doctor or another member of the health-care team. NCI notes that a clinician may not know every appropriate study, so a second opinion can be useful. NCI’s Cancer Information Service can provide a tailored trial search at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237), option 2.

- Compare those details with your records; mark requirements that are missing or unclear.
- Contact the listed trial coordinator and ask what records and screening tests are needed.
- Have your doctor communicate directly with the coordinator when medical language or eligibility questions are unclear.
Listings are leads, not personalized recommendations. NCI states that “no single list contains every clinical trial.” Status, participating locations, eligibility, and enrollment can change, so check the live listing and protocol on the date you are considering the study. Do not treat a listing count, title, or location as evidence of success.
Best Value
Know how expanded access differs from a clinical trial
Expanded access, sometimes called compassionate use, is a separate, clinician-led route for experimental drug use outside a clinical trial. NCI describes it as a possible option for someone with a life-threatening illness when standard treatments are unavailable and the person is not eligible for a trial.
Your doctor must ask the company whether it will provide the drug. If the company agrees, the doctor applies to the FDA; institutional review board approval and informed consent are part of the process. The company is not required to provide the drug. Unknown serious side effects, monitoring requirements, and cost can remain concerns.
Ask whether expanded access is relevant in your specific circumstances, who would provide and monitor the treatment, what costs could fall to you, and what alternatives remain. “Right to try” is a distinct pathway with different eligibility and drug criteria and is not regulated by the FDA in the same way as an approved clinical-trial pathway. Neither route guarantees access to any requested experimental drug.

Use the appointment to make a decision you can revisit
Before leaving, ask for copies of the consent form, protocol summary, visit calendar, contact numbers, and cost estimate. Write down the name and role of every person who answers a question and the date by which you must decide. Review the information with your caregiver and, if needed, a second specialist.
The decision remains yours after discussion with the clinicians. NCI’s treatment guide summarizes the central principle: “Your doctor is in the best position to help you understand all your treatment options.”
