Before you pay for a Fab Lab class, confirm six things with the provider: your child’s eligibility, whether an adult must stay, the tools and training involved, the safety controls, the complete cost and supply list, and the forms and pickup rules. Policies differ by lab, class, child’s age and equipment, so an answer from one makerspace cannot be treated as a universal standard. Read the current class description and policy, then ask staff to clarify anything they do not state plainly.
1. Is this class a fit for your child?
Ask about the exact age range
Start with the class’s written minimum and maximum age, not the lab’s general membership age. A child may be old enough to enter a makerspace but too young for a particular machine or project. Ask whether the age rule is measured on the class date, at registration, or by school grade, and whether an exception process exists.

Published examples show why you must ask the specific provider. A States of Guernsey Library Fab Lab policy sets a general access baseline of age 9 and requires a parent or guardian for users under 12. The CU Community Fab Lab requires adult supervision for patrons under 18. MakeHaven’s policy says it offers no scheduled youth programs under 12, limited programming for ages 12–14, and primarily serves ages 15–17. In contrast, Fab Lab Fabric + Quilt lists children’s classes for ages 8–12 and allows drop-off under its stated conditions. None of these rules establishes a universal Fab Lab age.
Check prerequisites and tool restrictions
- Does the child need prior experience, a prerequisite class or a completed safety badge?
- Are some tools restricted to older students even when the class itself accepts younger children?
- Will the instructor assess reading, dexterity, computer or design skills before the first session?
Ask what the child will actually make and learn. A project designed for an experienced teenager may frustrate a first-time maker, while a beginner activity may not challenge an older child. Request a sample project, expected software skills and the amount of independent work.

2. Can you drop your child off?
Clarify the supervision model in writing
“Drop-off” can mean several different arrangements. Ask whether you must remain in the building, stay in the classroom, remain within sight, or simply be reachable by phone. Confirm who supervises children during instruction, breaks, restroom trips and the transition to pickup. Ask where responsibility changes from the provider to the parent and what happens if you are late.
MakeHaven’s published policy requires direct, continuous parent or guardian supervision of minors and places responsibility for the child’s conduct and safety on the parent or guardian. Other programs use instructors or youth staff instead. A cited children’s provider allows drop-off for its 8–12 age group but requires a reachable parent contact and a defined pickup plan. Treat these as examples to investigate, not rules that apply to your class.
Ask how safeguarding works
Ask for the adult-to-student coverage used in this class. The reviewed policies do not establish a universal ratio, so request the provider’s actual number and how it changes if a staff member is absent. Also ask:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- How is one-on-one instruction conducted?
- How are private or enclosed rooms managed?
- What is the process for reporting unsafe, inappropriate or concerning behavior?
- Who can a child approach if they feel uncomfortable?
- How are injuries, near misses and safeguarding concerns documented and communicated to parents?
MakeHaven’s youth safety policy gives concrete safeguards you can ask a different provider about. It states: “No MakeHaven staff member, volunteer, member, contractor, or MakeHaven-designated instructor may be alone with a single minor in an enclosed or private space (e.g., recording booth, laser room, lab).” The policy also describes a rule of three in enclosed instructional spaces, visible one-on-one instruction, background checks for recurring youth-facing personnel and youth safety or abuse-prevention training. Those measures are questions for comparison, not mandatory requirements for every lab.

3. Which tools will children use, and what training is required?
Request an equipment list
Ask for the machines and hand tools planned for the project, including whether children will operate them or only watch a demonstration. A “maker class” might involve sewing machines and hand tools, or it might include a laser cutter, 3D printer, CNC machine, soldering station or other equipment with different hazards. Ask which tools are off limits to this age group and whether the plan can change if a machine is unavailable.
Confirm induction and machine-specific instruction
The States of Guernsey Library Fab Lab policy says, “Users must complete a Fab Lab induction before using equipment independently.” It also says CNC machines and other high-powered tools may require extra training or supervised use. Medford Public Library describes general safety instruction alongside equipment-specific badge classes. Ask whether your child receives a general orientation, a machine briefing or both; who verifies understanding; and whether a badge or written test is required before independent operation.
- Ask when the safety briefing occurs and how long it lasts.
- Ask whether every child receives hands-on practice before using the tool.
- Ask whether an instructor remains within immediate reach during operation.
- Ask what happens after a failed check, forgotten procedure or equipment fault.
- Ask whether training carries over to another class or must be repeated.
Do not assume a child’s experience with a home 3D printer, craft knife or sewing machine satisfies the lab’s requirements. The provider’s own induction and authorization process controls access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. What hazards and protective measures apply?
Match the safety discussion to the activity
Ask the instructor to describe hazards in plain language for the actual project. The CU Community Fab Lab waiver states: “The specific risks vary from one activity to another, but the risks range from 1) minor injuries such as small cuts, scratches, or burns, to 2) major injuries such as eye injury or loss of sight, cuts, and burns.” The relevant risks could include sharp edges, hot surfaces, moving parts, dust, fumes, noise, fire, electrical hazards or material reactions, depending on the equipment and process.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Then ask which controls are used: guards, ventilation, emergency stops, supervision, locked settings, safe material lists and cleanup procedures. The States of Guernsey policy requires appropriate personal protective equipment when needed. Ask exactly what your child must wear, who supplies it, and whether clothing such as closed-toe shoes, tied-back hair or sleeves is required. Do not buy goggles, gloves, respirators or other equipment before the provider confirms the specification; PPE depends on the activity and site.
Ask about materials and unsafe-use procedures
- Which materials are approved for this machine?
- May families bring outside materials, and do staff have to approve them first?
- Are certain plastics, woods, chemicals or recycled items prohibited?
- How should a child stop a machine or report a fault?
- What is the procedure after an injury, near miss or damaged tool?
One library policy reviewed for this topic says users should promptly report faults, injuries and near misses and that unsafe or incompatible materials may be prohibited. Ask how that rule is applied in your class, rather than assuming every lab uses the same wording or process.
5. What is included in the price?
Get the total cost, not just tuition
Ask for an itemized price covering registration, instruction, project materials, machine-use charges and any membership or facility fee. A class provider reviewed here says some classes include materials while others require participants to supply them; the class description identifies which arrangement applies. Another policy says some equipment may carry a usage fee. These examples make the written price and supply list essential.
| Cost question | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Registration | Published tuition, taxes or booking fees and whether membership is required |
| Materials | What the provider supplies, what the child must bring and whether quantities are limited |
| Equipment | Separate machine, badge or usage charges |
| Replacement costs | Responsibility for damaged materials, failed prints or broken tools |
| Changes | Refund, credit or transfer terms if the class is canceled or the child cannot attend |
Ask for the exact supply list before purchasing anything. A provider may supply specialty stock, require a particular file format or prohibit materials that could damage equipment. Bringing the wrong item can create a safety problem and an avoidable expense.

6. What happens if plans change?
Cancellation, illness and rescheduling
Ask what happens if the class does not reach minimum enrollment, the instructor is unavailable, the lab closes, or your child becomes ill. Clarify whether you receive a refund, account credit or a place in a later session, and how much notice is required. Ask whether a missed session can be made up and whether materials are held for a later date.
Arrival and pickup logistics
- What time should children arrive, and is late arrival allowed?
- Where do parents sign in and out?
- Who may collect the child, and what identification is checked?
- What happens if the authorized pickup person is delayed?
- How does the provider contact you during an emergency?
Have the provider explain the plan for a child who finishes early, refuses an activity or needs to leave before the scheduled end. A reachable contact and a named pickup arrangement are particularly important when drop-off is permitted.
7. Which forms and permissions are required?
Complete consent and emergency information
Ask which forms must be submitted before the first class and whether each parent or guardian must sign. Common requirements in published examples include a minor waiver, parent authorization, emergency contacts and medical information. Confirm deadlines and whether staff need details about allergies, medication, mobility, sensory needs or other conditions that affect safe participation.

Review photography and data practices
Ask whether staff photograph or record classes, where images are used and how to decline. One reviewed class-policy example lets families opt out of class photography and explains its contact-data practices. That arrangement does not automatically apply elsewhere, so obtain the provider’s own consent wording.
Best Value
Discuss accommodations early
Tell the provider about disability-related access needs, learning preferences, communication requirements or sensory sensitivities before enrolling. Ask whether the room, workbench, software, PPE and instruction can be adapted, and what information the instructor needs. The reviewed provider invites families to raise accessibility needs in advance; another lab may have a different process or capacity.
8. Compare two or more classes systematically
If several classes meet your basic needs, compare them on the same criteria rather than choosing on price alone.
| Comparison area | Questions to record for each class |
|---|---|
| Age and prerequisites | Written age range, tool-specific limits, prior experience and badges |
| Supervision | Drop-off or parent-present, adult coverage, instructor role and pickup control |
| Safety instruction | Induction, equipment training, PPE, material restrictions and incident reporting |
| Learning fit | Project, skill level, class size, pace and individual support |
| Total cost | Tuition, materials, machine fees, required clothing and replacement charges |
| Logistics | Schedule, arrival, late pickup, cancellation, illness and rescheduling |
| Consent and inclusion | Waivers, emergency data, photography, privacy and accommodations |
The available policies support these as useful comparison questions, but they do not provide comparable ratings or identify a best provider. Record the answers, the staff member who gave them and the date, then recheck the class page before payment because policies and equipment plans can change.
9. A short conversation script for the provider
You can send this list by email or use it during a phone call:
- “My child is [age]. Is this class open to that age, and are any planned tools restricted by age?”
- “Does a parent have to stay on site, stay in the room or remain within sight? Who supervises breaks and pickup?”
- “Which machines and materials will children use, and will they operate them independently or under direct supervision?”
- “What induction, machine-specific training or badge is required?”
- “What hazards and PPE apply, and does the lab supply the PPE?”
- “What is included in the listed price? Are there material, machine or membership fees, and what must we bring?”
- “Which waiver, emergency, medical, photo and pickup forms are required, and by what date?”
- “What are your cancellation, illness, late-arrival and rescheduling rules?”
- “How can we discuss an accessibility or learning need before registration?”
10. When to pause enrollment
Pause and request clarification if staff cannot identify the equipment, age limits, supervision arrangement, required training, total price or emergency contact process. Vague answers such as “kids are always supervised” do not tell you whether an adult must stay, how many students an instructor covers or what happens in a private room. Ask for the written policy or current class description and check that it matches the verbal explanation.
Enroll only when the provider’s answers fit your child’s age, ability, comfort and schedule. The practical standard is not whether another lab allows a similar activity; it is whether this class gives your family a clear, current plan for eligibility, supervision, safe tool use, cost, consent and pickup.
