Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore you pay a deposit or sign an enrollment agreement, verify that the exact healthcare program leads to the credential, license or certification required for the job and state where you plan to work. Get the program’s total cost, schedule, clinical requirements, completion standards, outcome data and cancellation terms in writing. Then check those claims with the relevant state regulator, credentialing body and prospective employers.
Start with the job and state, not the school’s sales pitch
Write down the occupation you want, the state where you expect to work and the employers you might apply to. Requirements can differ by occupation and state, and an attractive program may prepare you for a certificate that does not authorize practice or qualify you for the examination you need.

Use the state licensing organization or board as your first authority. Ask what education, supervised clinical hours, examinations, background checks, immunizations, health clearances and other prerequisites apply. Then ask the school to show, in writing, how its specific program satisfies each requirement. For an online or hybrid program, confirm rules for the state in which you are located and the state in which you intend to seek employment; distance-education disclosures do not replace a state board’s rules.
Ask several local employers which credentials they accept for entry-level vacancies. A regulator can tell you what is legally required, while employers can tell you what they actually screen for, such as a particular exam, electronic-records experience or documented clinical hours.

Identify the exact credential you will receive
“Certificate,” “certification” and “license” describe different things. Ask the school to put the credential’s full name, issuing organization and post-graduation use in the catalog and enrollment agreement.
| Credential | Who issues it | What it generally means | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Educational certificate | A school or training provider | Confirmation that an occupation-specific educational program was completed | Which employers accept it? Does it make me eligible for a separate examination or license? |
| Professional certification | A certification body or professional association | Recognition that a person met that organization’s requirements, often through an examination and renewal rules | Does this program make me eligible to sit for the exam? What are application, exam and renewal costs? |
| Government license | A state or other government agency | Legal authority to perform a regulated occupation | What education, clinical, exam and background-check requirements apply in my state? |
| Degree | An accredited college or university | An academic award that may be required for a later credential or transfer pathway | Will credits transfer to the schools or programs I may attend next? |
The Bureau of Labor Statistics distinguishes a license as legal authority issued by a government agency, a certification as recognition from a certification body or professional association, and an educational certificate as confirmation that a school or provider’s program was completed. Those distinctions matter: graduating from a school program does not itself grant a state license.
Confirm examination eligibility
Ask which examination or next credential follows graduation, whether every graduate is eligible to apply, and whether eligibility depends on a particular number of classroom, laboratory or clinical hours. Obtain the name of the examining body and verify the rule independently. Also ask whether the school’s curriculum aligns with the current exam blueprint and how it handles students who fail an exam or need additional preparation.

Check accreditation, authorization and program approval separately
Request the accreditor’s legal name, the dates of current accreditation and the scope of that accreditation. Verify the institution through the U.S. Department of Education’s accreditation information and determine whether the specific healthcare program is included when accreditation is granted at the program level.

Institutional accreditation, programmatic accreditation, state authorization and occupational approval answer different questions. Institutional accreditation concerns the school as a whole; programmatic accreditation concerns a particular profession or program; state authorization permits an institution to operate in a jurisdiction; and a licensing board decides whether graduates may practice. None should be treated as proof of all the others.
Accreditation can affect federal student-aid access and the transferability of credits. Contact a potential transfer institution and prospective employers directly and ask whether they recognize this school’s credential or coursework. Keep the replies with your enrollment records.
Map the program to your state’s licensing rules
- Obtain the current rule. Download or request the licensing board’s requirements for the occupation and state where you will work.
- List every prerequisite. Include prerequisite courses, minimum grades, clinical or practicum hours, examinations, background checks, fingerprints, immunizations, drug screening and any health documentation.
- Match each item to the curriculum. Ask the school for course numbers, hour totals, clinical sites and documentation showing how each requirement is met.
- Check location limits. For online programs, ask whether students in your state may enroll and whether clinical placements or exam eligibility are restricted by state.
- Reconfirm before starting. Rules can change while you are enrolled; ask the board and school to identify the effective date of the requirements you are relying on.
Federal guidance on distance education describes state-specific licensure disclosures and the relationship between program completion and eligibility for a required licensing or certification exam. Treat that guidance as a disclosure framework, not a substitute for the applicable state board.

- Transportation, parking, lodging or childcare associated with clinical assignments
- Certification, licensing and examination application fees
- Potential costs for repeating a course, clinical rotation or examination
For every line item, ask whether it is mandatory, when it is due, whether it is refundable and whether the quoted amount is a one-time or recurring charge. Ask what happens financially if you withdraw, fail a course, cannot obtain a clinical clearance or need to repeat a placement.
Compare funding by total repayment
Ask the financial-aid office whether grants, federal loans, work-study, scholarships and school payment plans are available. Request eligibility conditions, disbursement timing, interest rates, fees and the total amount you would owe at completion. A low monthly payment can still represent a high total repayment.
Compare the offer with nearby community-college programs, public technical schools and employer-sponsored training where those options exist. Ask whether prior coursework, military training or relevant credentials can reduce the required hours without jeopardizing licensing eligibility.

Interrogate completion, employment, salary and debt claims
Request the latest program-specific figures in writing, not a national statistic or a success story. Ask which graduating cohorts are included and how many students were excluded.
| Measure | Questions that reveal what it means |
|---|---|
| Completion rate | What percentage of the entering cohort finished? Are withdrawals, transfers, leaves or students still enrolled excluded? |
| Placement rate | How many graduates obtained work in the trained field? Does part-time, temporary or unrelated work count? How is employment verified? |
| Starting salary | Is the figure a median, average or highest example? Which employers, hours and geographic area are represented? |
| Graduate debt | What is the typical debt for completers, and does the figure include private borrowing, fees and living expenses? |
| Licensing or exam pass rate | Which exam dates and first-time test takers are included? How many graduates were eligible but did not test? |
Ask to see the definitions, cohort size, collection period and verification method behind each number. A school is not an employment agency and cannot guarantee a job, so treat “job placement” as a reported outcome rather than a promise.

In a specific short-term-program context covered by federal aid rules, the Federal Student Aid Handbook for the 2025–2026 award year defines placement as employment within 180 days of receiving a credential and employment for at least 13 weeks, with documentation required for counted employment. Those definitions do not automatically govern every school’s marketing statistics; ask which standard the program uses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the schedule, attendance and clinical reality
Ask for the normal calendar and a sample week. Confirm program length, start dates, weekly classroom and laboratory hours, evening or weekend availability, attendance rules, make-up policies, grading thresholds and progression requirements. A program advertised as “flexible” may still require daytime clinical attendance.
Clinical placements
Find out who arranges clinical sites, where they are located, how far you may travel, whether transportation is your responsibility and how many hours are guaranteed. Ask what happens if a site becomes unavailable, a placement is delayed or you cannot meet a site’s health or background requirements. Determine whether you can choose a site or shift and whether unpaid clinical time is included in the quoted schedule.
People and equipment
Ask for instructor qualifications and current student-to-instructor or class-size information. Visit the classroom, laboratory and simulation areas when possible. Check whether equipment resembles what local employers use, whether students receive enough hands-on time and how often equipment is updated. Ask how students access practice labs outside scheduled class hours.

Review transferability and your next step
If you might pursue an associate, bachelor’s or advanced clinical credential, ask a receiving institution to evaluate the exact course numbers, credit hours, syllabi and grades before enrolling. “The school accepts transfer credit” is incomplete unless a named destination school confirms what will transfer and apply toward its requirements.
Ask whether the program is designed as a terminal credential or part of a published ladder. Clarify whether completing one level guarantees admission to the next; usually it does not. Keep copies of syllabi, transcripts and clinical records because a later institution or licensing board may request them.
Read the enrollment agreement before signing
Obtain the catalog, enrollment agreement, financial-aid disclosures, refund policy, cancellation procedure and any employment, tuition-repayment or arbitration agreement. Read every page before paying a deposit.
- What is the deadline and method for cancelling?
- Is the deposit refundable, and under what conditions?
- How is a refund calculated after classes or clinical work begin?
- What charges remain if you withdraw, fail or are dismissed?
- Can the school change tuition, schedule, instructors or clinical sites?
- What happens if the program is cancelled or loses required approval?
Ask for time to review the documents and discuss them with a trusted person. The Federal Trade Commission’s college-selection guidance states: “If the school won’t give you documents to review before you commit, don’t enroll. Period.” A recruiter who demands an immediate signature, refuses to provide written terms or claims that a license or job is guaranteed is giving you a reason to pause.
Use a side-by-side decision sheet
Ask every program the same questions and record the answer, document title, date and contact person. Compare these axes rather than comparing advertisements:
| Comparison axis | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Credential and eligibility | Exact award, exam eligibility and written state-board confirmation |
| Accreditation and approval | Accreditor, scope, state authorization and occupation-specific approval |
| Total cost and aid | Itemized required costs, aid terms, repayment total and repeat-course charges |
| Length and logistics | Calendar, attendance, clinical hours, site travel and contingency plan |
| Outcomes | Cohort-based completion, placement, salary, debt and exam data with definitions |
| Transferability | Written evaluation from likely receiving institutions |
| Instruction and facilities | Instructor credentials, class size, equipment access and update cycle |
| Cancellation protection | Refund formula, cancellation deadline and remedies if approval or placement fails |
Historical context—and why it is not a promise
Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates based on 2018 data found that 33.0 percent of civilian workers had a pre-employment training requirement and 75.5 percent of workers in healthcare practitioner and technical occupations had a license requirement. Among workers with associated time, the reported average duration was 215 days for a license, 138 days for certification and 231 days for an educational certificate. These are occupation-wide historical estimates, not a prediction of how long your chosen program will take or whether you will qualify for a particular license.
