Ask the supplier to confirm, in writing and for your exact product code, region, manufacturing site, and application, what changed in ownership, formulation, production, documentation, supply, and technical support. Then compare the current product with the one you qualified and obtain any customer or regulatory approvals required before using a changed product. A product rename alone does not establish a technical change—or prove that nothing else changed.
Start with the product identity and transaction changes
Ask which legal entity now owns and supplies the coating, and whether the contract counterparty, product name or code, ordering channel, invoice details, manufacturing responsibility, or customer approvals have changed. Request a crosswalk from legacy names and codes to current ordering identifiers, with effective dates and the regions affected.

Keep product identity separate from technical continuity. In a communication about its transfer of Sika’s European Industrial Coatings business, Sherwin-Williams said products were renamed within its naming system while their formulations remained unchanged. It also described continuity in raw materials, recipes, manufacturing process, expected quality, and technical data. That statement applies to the named transition; ask your supplier for equivalent confirmation tied to your own product and supply arrangement. Sherwin-Williams transition information
Ask exactly what changed in materials and manufacturing
Request a written change history covering the full production chain. For each change, ask whether it has already happened or is planned, when it applies, which lots or customers it affects, and whether your approval is needed before implementation.

- Industrial Paint Coatings Engineered with Stainless Steel for Superior Protection
- Protects Against the Destruction and High-Cost of Corrosion
- Use on Food Processing Equipment Where USDA Approval for Incidental Food Contact is Required
- Incredible Aesthetic Appeal and Durable Finish
- 1 Can of Black Polyurethane Aerosol
- Formulation, ingredient levels, and raw-material or processing-material suppliers
- Manufacturing and fill sites, subcontractors, process parameters, equipment, and production methods
- Packaging and auxiliary materials
- Specifications, certified properties, test methods, and safety data sheets
Also request the supplier’s change-control procedure and the advance notice and approval terms that apply under your contract. These requirements vary. PPG’s automotive supplier requirements identify changes such as raw-material suppliers, process or equipment, formulation, manufacturing site, certified-property specification or test method, safety data sheets, and packaging. For covered proposed changes, those requirements call for at least 90 days’ notice and acceptance before changes that may affect characteristics, performance, or regulatory compliance. Axalta’s EMEA supplier directives separately identify location, process, processing-material, formulation, packaging, and auxiliary-material changes, and reserve the right to test a sample before a change takes effect. These are company-specific requirements, not general industry rules. PPG automotive supplier requirements; Axalta EMEA supplier directives
Require evidence for performance in your application
Ask for a side-by-side comparison of the currently approved coating and the post-transition product, using methods and limits relevant to your specification. Request applicable specification limits, certified properties, batch or lot data, and records of application or performance testing. The test conditions matter: establish the substrate and preparation, application method, film build, cure conditions, line speed, operating environment, and acceptance criteria.

If the supplier reports a change—or cannot establish that the product is unchanged—agree on samples, a controlled trial plan, who will review results, and who must authorize production release. Confirm whether your customer or a regulator must approve the product before use. PPG’s requirements describe evaluation of proposed changes that may affect characteristics, performance, or regulatory compliance, but neither the supplier materials cited here sets one universal test method for every customer coating. For its own site realignment, ACTEGA says formulations were adopted 1:1, production technologies compared and harmonized, starting-material suppliers aligned, and product-related data kept the same; it also says some packaging was reallocated, harmonized, or adapted. Verify documents and approvals for the destination market
For the exact product and intended use, ask for the latest dated safety data sheet (SDS), technical data sheet (TDS), specification, test certificates, regulatory statements, registrations or classifications, and customer-specific approvals. Have the supplier identify any changes to classification, ingredient disclosure, or approval status, and state whether a change requires notification, requalification, or new approval in each market where you use the coating.
Do not treat an unchanged technical data sheet as proof that every customer approval or regulatory status remains valid. Sherwin-Williams’ statement that technical data remained the same concerned its named business transition; PPG includes SDS changes among the subjects covered by its automotive requirements. Check current documents against your product, use, and jurisdiction. PPG automotive supplier requirements; Sherwin-Williams transition information

Get a supply-continuity plan, not just a product assurance
Ask which sites will manufacture and ship the coating after the transition, and whether capacity, allocation, lead times, or order cutoffs will change. Confirm how the supplier will cover open purchase orders and forecast demand, what inventory or safety-stock plan applies, and whom to contact if supply is interrupted. Request written notice terms if the grade is constrained, transferred, replaced, or discontinued.

Notice periods depend on the supplier requirements and contract that apply to your purchase. PPG’s automotive requirements call for adequate safety stock to cover outstanding purchase orders and specify discontinuance notice of two years for colored pigments and one year for other covered materials. Those periods are not universal coatings-industry requirements. PPG automotive supplier requirements

Confirm who handles technical support and corrective action
Get the names and contact details for the post-acquisition technical service, sales, quality, and regulatory contacts. Confirm whether local application support remains available, how urgent issues are escalated, and who can authorize a deviation. Ask what the complaint process provides, including root-cause findings and corrective or preventive actions if a transition-related issue occurs.
Axalta’s supplier directives describe written notification and a deviation permit before delivery of nonconforming material, as well as complaint reports that include root-cause analysis and corrective or preventive actions. Decide whether to qualify an alternate
If continuity is critical, ask whether there is a technically suitable alternate product, production site, or supplier, and what it would take to qualify it. Compare alternatives on the dimensions that affect your operation:
