Thermal putty is a soft, conformable thermal interface used to fill an uneven gap between laptop components and the cooling assembly. It is commonly considered around VRAM and power-delivery ICs, where neighboring components may sit at different heights. The critical point is that the correct amount is set by the laptop’s original cooling design: the relevant thickness is the compressed bond-line after the heatsink is seated, not a universal number printed on a tub.
Manufacturers publish useful ranges for their own materials, but those figures do not identify the correct interface for every notebook. Before replacing factory material, confirm the laptop model’s service information or document what the original cooler used.

What thermal putty does inside a laptop
A heatsink transfers heat efficiently only when its contact surface is close to the component that must be cooled. Laptop cooling assemblies, however, often span chips and power components with different package heights. A rigid thermal pad may be too thick for one location and too thin for another. Thermal putty fills those variations by deforming under the cooler’s mounting pressure.

The putty occupies the space between a component and the cooling hardware, replacing air in that gap with a material intended to conduct heat. Its softness lets it conform to uneven surfaces and accommodate height differences across several nearby components. Once the cooler is fastened, the material is compressed into the remaining space.

It is not automatically interchangeable with paste or a pad
CPU and GPU thermal paste is designed for a very thin, relatively flat interface. A conventional thermal pad is a preformed sheet with a specified thickness and compression behavior. Putty is a form-in-place gap filler. Substituting one category for another can change cooler seating, contact pressure, or electrical safety, even when the package label shows a similar thermal-conductivity figure.
Typical locations
Product makers identify memory chips and power-delivery components as possible uses. iFixit describes its putty for VRAM and power-delivery ICs and says it can be used when repasting a laptop. Thermal Grizzly lists notebooks among possible applications and presents its material as an alternative to pads where component heights vary. Those statements describe possible applications for those products; they do not prove that any particular laptop uses putty at those locations.
Why the correct thickness matters
The interface must bridge the actual separation between each component and the cooler after the assembly is installed. Too little material may leave a void or fail to reach the cooler. Too much, or material that resists compression, can hold the heatsink away from another chip and alter the pressure intended by the screw pattern. Because one cooler can cover components at several heights, a single pre-cut thickness is not necessarily correct everywhere.

The useful dimension is the layer that remains when the cooler is fully seated. Thermal Grizzly’s 2024 datasheet says its Thermal Putty can bridge height differences from 0.2 to 3.0 mm. That is a product-line claim about a stated bridging range, not a laptop-wide tolerance or a recommendation to apply 3 mm in a notebook.

iFixit states that its own putty compresses to a bond-line of at least 0.1 mm. The same product page lists 6 W/m·K conductivity and identifies ASTM D5470. These are iFixit’s published specifications for that product; the 0.1 mm figure is not a minimum suitable thickness for every laptop component.
Why a universal chart would be misleading
The required gap depends on the exact heatsink, component packages, mounting frame, screw sequence, and any surrounding pads or insulators. The available manufacturer documentation does not provide a universal laptop measurement method or a model-independent replacement chart. A product’s advertised range therefore cannot be converted into “the correct thickness” for an unspecified notebook.
How to identify the material your laptop needs
Do not begin by choosing the softest or highest-conductivity product. First establish what the original assembly was designed to use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the exact model and revision. Record the complete model number, board revision if available, and the cooling-assembly part number. Two laptops sold under one family name can use different heatsinks.
- Find model-specific service information. Look for an official service manual, parts diagram, or documented teardown that identifies pad locations, putty, or other gap fillers. If the documentation does not state a thickness, do not infer one from a generic chart.
- Document the original interface before cleaning. Photograph each contact area and note whether the material is a sheet, a soft molded compound, or paste. Preserve any intact material long enough to understand which components it contacted and how it was compressed.
- Map every contact point. A single heatsink may contact the CPU or GPU, memory packages, voltage-regulator components, and other parts. Record these separately rather than assigning one thickness to the entire cooler.
- Check clearance and pressure requirements. FUCHS describes TIM PUTTY as an ultra-soft, form-in-place filler for sensitive components where minimal pressure can be applied. That illustrates why mechanical behavior matters as much as nominal thickness.
- Choose a material whose documented application matches the evidence. If the laptop’s documentation does not establish a putty interface, pause rather than treating a product’s notebook listing as confirmation.
How to compare candidate thermal putties
Conductivity is only one property. A suitable comparison asks whether the material can fill the actual gap, compress without upsetting the assembly, remain electrically appropriate, and is documented for the intended use.

| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gap and compressed bond-line | Published bridging range, minimum bond-line, and compression behavior for the specific product | The cooler must contact every intended component without being held off another one |
| Conformability | How readily the putty follows uneven heights under the assembly’s available pressure | Different package heights require different deformation, and sensitive parts may tolerate little force |
| Electrical properties | Whether the manufacturer documents electrical insulation or conductivity | Material near exposed contacts must not create an unintended electrical path |
| Application evidence | Stated uses, cautions, and any requirement for application testing | A notebook listing is category guidance, not proof for a specific model |
| Thermal-conductivity figure | Value, test method, and source, such as ASTM D5470 where stated | A higher number alone does not establish fit, pressure behavior, or real performance in your assembly |

What the manufacturers actually claim
Thermal Grizzly
Thermal Grizzly’s 2024 datasheet describes its product as “Thermal Putty is a non-electrically conductive alternative to traditional thermal pads and is easy to apply.” It lists notebooks, gaming consoles, handheld devices, and audio products as possible applications, and gives a 0.2–3.0 mm height-difference bridging range. The datasheet also cautions that its data are based on the company’s knowledge and experience and do not legally assure suitability for a concrete purpose. The company suggests cleaning and degreasing the target surface, including with isopropanol or its cleaning wipes; that is manufacturer application guidance.
iFixit
iFixit describes its Thermal Putty for VRAM and power-delivery ICs and says it can be used when repasting a laptop. Its product page states a compressed bond-line of at least 0.1 mm and 6 W/m·K conductivity, with ASTM D5470 named as the test method. The page was reviewed on October 13, 2026, and the figures remain product-specific claims.
FUCHS
FUCHS presents TIM PUTTY as an ultra-soft, form-in-place gap filler for sensitive components where minimal pressure can be applied. Its page lists several formulations with differing properties. That variation is a reminder that “thermal putty” is a category, not a single standardized compound.

Laird
Laird lists notebooks, tablets, and portable devices among potential applications for Tputty 502. It states that application performance varies and that engineers should test the material in the application. This is a manufacturer caution, not a model-specific consumer recommendation.
A cautious replacement workflow
- Confirm the interface type. Proceed only when model-specific evidence or the original assembly shows that the location uses a putty-like gap filler.
- Record the layout. Photograph the cooler and board, label each contact area, and note neighboring insulators, shields, and pads.
- Remove residue without changing the geometry. Clean only after documenting the original material and contact pattern. Follow the chosen manufacturer’s cleaning guidance; Thermal Grizzly specifically mentions degreasing with isopropanol or its wipes.
- Use product documentation to select the material. Check its electrical property, application notes, gap range, and compression behavior. Do not select solely by the largest conductivity number.
- Apply only to the documented contact areas. The objective is to fill the measured or documented separation, not to create a thick blanket over the entire board.
- Seat the cooler exactly as designed. Use the original hardware and mounting points. If the service documentation specifies a screw order or torque, follow it; otherwise, avoid inventing a torque value.
- Inspect for mechanical interference before final operation. The assembly should sit flat and all intended fasteners should engage normally. Resistance, rocking, or a gap at a mounting point is a reason to stop and reassess the material amount.
- Verify operation after reassembly. Check that the laptop boots, fans behave normally, and no component or connector was disturbed. A temperature change alone cannot prove that the interface thickness is correct.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a generic thickness from another laptop
Another model may have a different heatsink, package height, or screw stack. Treating its measurement as a specification for your machine can leave a component uncontacted or prevent the cooler from seating. Return to the exact model and assembly documentation.
Applying a pad where the assembly expects putty
A rigid sheet cannot automatically conform to multiple heights. If the original material was a soft filler, verify the replacement category before installing a pad.
Assuming conductivity settles the choice
Conductivity describes heat-transfer capability under a stated test method; it does not describe electrical insulation, softness, compression, or the amount needed for your gap. Compare all of those properties.

Ignoring electrical behavior
Material near exposed contacts should have documented electrical properties appropriate to that location. Thermal Grizzly describes its putty as non-electrically conductive, while any other product must be checked independently rather than assumed equivalent.
Forcing the heatsink down
Excess pressure can change the intended mechanical load or damage a sensitive component. If the cooler no longer sits as it did before service, remove it and determine whether the material quantity or type is preventing normal seating.
Maintenance and when to stop
Thermal putty is not a universal maintenance substitute. Opening a laptop can affect seals, connectors, warranty terms, and screw retention. If no model-specific information identifies the original interface, the safest technical decision is to obtain that information or use a qualified repair service rather than guess.

Stop the work if the original material cannot be identified, if the cooler layout differs from the documentation, if a required thickness is unknown, or if the replacement changes the cooler’s seating. Those conditions cannot be resolved reliably by a product label alone.
Bottom line
Thermal putty lets a laptop heatsink bridge uneven component heights, especially around memory and power-delivery parts. Its correct thickness is the compressed gap required by that specific cooling assembly. Manufacturer ranges such as 0.2–3.0 mm from Thermal Grizzly and an at-least-0.1 mm bond-line from iFixit describe those products, not every laptop. Identify the model-specific interface first, then compare gap capability, compression, electrical properties, and documented use before replacing anything.
