The 2022 merger brought WarnerMedia’s game business into Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), but it did not mean that every game franchise, studio or future release changed hands in a newly announced way. WBD’s clearest public games strategy came in February 2025: concentrate on four established tentpoles—Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC, especially Batman. Later corporate plans put Warner Bros. Gaming Studios in a proposed Warner Bros. company, but a subsequent Paramount Skydance merger agreement changed the corporate outlook and remained subject to closing conditions in WBD’s filing.
What the 2022 merger changed
Warner Bros. Discovery was formed when Discovery completed its merger with AT&T’s WarnerMedia business on April 8, 2022, according to WBD’s 2024 Form 10-K. That brought WarnerMedia’s interactive gaming operations into the combined company. WBD’s filings treat interactive gaming as part of Studios, and identify game sales and mobile in-game content as sources of revenue. WBD 2024 Form 10-K

The merger therefore established a new corporate parent for the games business; the sources cited here do not show that the merger itself transferred a particular game franchise, cancelled a game, closed a studio or approved a sequel. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the merger announcement or later corporate restructuring plans.

Which game franchises WBD identified as priorities
In its February 27, 2025 shareholder letter, WBD called 2024 disappointing for Games and said it had announced a restructuring plan to focus resources and capital on proven intellectual property and studios. It named four game tentpoles:
#1 Best Overall
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
- Harry Potter
- Game of Thrones
- Mortal Kombat
- DC, particularly Batman
WBD said each franchise had generated more than $1 billion in consumer sales in past years. That is a company statement about franchise-wide consumer sales, not a disclosure of game-only revenue or a breakdown of sales by title. The letter described Games as a “strategic differentiator” for immersing fans in the company’s characters and worlds through interactive play. WBD Q4 2024 Shareholder Letter, February 27, 2025
The four names are the franchises WBD highlighted as strategic tentpoles, not a definitive list of every property in its games catalog or a complete statement of game rights. The letter does not provide a release schedule, confirm specific projects, or say that every future game will be based on one of these four.

What Hogwarts Legacy says—and does not say
WBD cited Hogwarts Legacy as an example of its strategy, describing it as a new gaming franchise and the best-selling game of 2023. Those are WBD’s characterizations in the shareholder letter; the statement does not supply an independently verified ranking or a title-specific sales figure. 1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe example illustrates why WBD pointed to established entertainment worlds as valuable game properties. It does not, by itself, confirm a sequel, a particular development plan or a change in ownership of the underlying franchise.
How the later corporate plans affect the picture
The announced Warner Bros. and Discovery Global separation
On July 28, 2025, WBD said it planned to separate its businesses into two companies. Under the announced plan, the Streaming & Studios company—including Warner Bros. Gaming Studios—would be named Warner Bros.; the Global Networks company would be named Discovery Global. This was a proposed organizational structure, not proof that the separation had taken effect. WBD announcement, July 28, 2025
The later Paramount Skydance agreement
WBD’s 2025 Form 10-K says that on February 27, 2026, the company terminated its Netflix merger agreement and entered into a merger agreement with Paramount Skydance. The filing says completion remained subject to shareholder approval, regulatory approvals and other conditions; it does not report a completed acquisition. It also says the agreement barred WBD from completing the separation as a condition of Paramount Skydance’s obligation to close. WBD 2025 Form 10-K

- Amazing New Settings
That chronology means the July 2025 separation plan should not be described as completed or treated as the settled future home of the games business. The later transaction agreement changed the corporate context, while its closing remained conditional in the cited filing.
What players and franchise fans can reasonably conclude
- WBD made its games priorities clearer: its February 2025 letter singled out Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC, especially Batman.
- The company presented games as strategically important: it linked interactive play to engagement with its characters and worlds, while acknowledging a disappointing 2024 and describing a refocus.
- The merger and proposed corporate changes do not establish individual game outcomes: the cited materials do not document franchise-by-franchise ownership changes, specific development-team changes, cancellations, sequel approvals or release dates.
- Corporate transaction status matters: WBD’s later filing describes the Paramount Skydance deal as awaiting conditions, not as a completed acquisition.
For now, the most reliable guide to WBD’s stated game priorities is the February 2025 shareholder letter, not an assumption that a corporate merger or planned separation automatically changes a game’s rights, team or launch plans.
