What the Stanford–Elsevier Top 2% Scientist List Measures—and What It Doesn’t

The Stanford–Elsevier “top 2% scientist list” is a Scopus-based database of citation indicators, not an award or a certification of research quality. Version 9, published by Elsevier on October 7, 2026, uses an August 1, 2026 Scopus snapshot and reports career-long and 2025 single-year metrics. Inclusion means that a scientist met that release’s citation-based selection rule; it does not establish the quality, integrity, teaching, mentorship or wider importance of the person’s work.

What the Stanford–Elsevier list actually is

The name commonly used online refers to the Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators. It is a publicly available author database associated with Stanford researchers and Elsevier’s Scopus data and repository. Stanford does not grant a prize called the “top 2% scientist award.”

The database asks a narrow, measurable question: how strong is an author’s citation impact in the Scopus records and author profile used for a particular release? It combines several citation indicators, adjusts some measures for co-authorship, and considers whether a researcher is listed as a single, first or last author. The result is a composite c-score and a set of supporting metrics.

That scope matters. Citations are evidence that other indexed publications referred to a work; they are not a direct inspection of whether the work is correct, useful, ethical or socially valuable. The database is therefore best treated as a standardized bibliometric reference, not as an all-purpose judgment about a scientist.

What version 9 covers

Elsevier’s version 9 record was published on October 7, 2026. Its numbers come from an August 1, 2026 snapshot of Scopus and the author profiles available when the calculations were made.

View Citation period What it answers
Career-long Through December 31, 2025 How much citation impact has accumulated over the release’s career window?
Single-year Citations received during calendar year 2025 Which authors had strong impact in one recent year, reducing the advantage of having a longer publishing career?

These are different files and different questions. A scientist can appear strongly in one view and not the other because the career-long view rewards accumulated impact while the one-year view concentrates on citations received in 2025.

Version 9 includes citation counts, the h-index, a co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, author-position citation measures, and a composite c-score. It also reports measures with and without self-citations, the ratio of citations to citing papers, and information about retracted papers and citations to or from retracted papers. Scientists are assigned to 20 broad scientific fields and 174 subfields under the Science-Metrix classification. Field and subfield percentiles are supplied for scientists with at least five papers.

The release is a snapshot rather than a live leaderboard. New papers, newly indexed citations, profile corrections and changes in author attribution can affect a later annual edition, but they do not silently alter the archived version 9 files. When quoting a number, preserve the edition and the date instead of treating it as a permanently current rank.

How scientists are selected

Version 9 uses a citation-indicator rule rather than a committee’s nomination or a review of each researcher’s portfolio. A scientist is selected if the person is among the top 100,000 authors by c-score under the release’s criteria, with and without self-citations, or reaches a percentile rank of 2% or above in an assigned subfield.

The “2%” is therefore a threshold within the database’s classified population. It is not a claim that exactly two out of every 100 researchers worldwide have been independently judged excellent, and it is not a pass/fail assessment of all scientific disciplines. The result depends on the Scopus population, author-profile assignments, field classification, citation window and release calculations.

The wording “top 2%” can also conceal which criterion produced the inclusion. A person may qualify through the overall top-100,000 route, through the version that excludes self-citations, or through the percentile threshold in a subfield. Those routes should not be collapsed into a single interpretation. Check the release fields and the relevant career-long or single-year file before describing why someone appears.

Because the release is a dated snapshot, later changes do not rewrite version 9. Elsevier says that corrections to a Scopus author record should be submitted through Scopus’s Author Feedback Wizard for possible use in future annual updates. A corrected profile may affect a later release, but it does not retroactively change an archived version 9 result.

What the c-score measures

Elsevier describes the c-score as emphasizing impact—citations—rather than productivity, meaning the number of publications. It also incorporates co-authorship and author positions. The foundational 2019 methodology paper identifies six components:

  1. Total citations.
  2. The Hirsch h-index.
  3. The Schreiber hm-index, adjusted for co-authorship.
  4. Citations to single-author papers.
  5. Citations to single- or first-author papers.
  6. Citations to single-, first- or last-author papers.

Those components reward both accumulated attention and evidence of authorship prominence. A paper with many co-authors does not contribute in exactly the same way as a single-author paper, and citations to work where an author occupies a first or last position are treated separately from the overall citation total.

The score is consequently not a simple publication tally and not just an h-index ranking. Two authors with the same total citation count can have different c-scores if their h-indices, co-authorship-adjusted hm-indices or author-position citation patterns differ. Conversely, a large publication list does not automatically produce a high score if the indexed papers have generated little citation activity.

The six-part description comes from the original peer-reviewed method paper. It is the foundation for understanding the score, not a guarantee that every data category or implementation detail has remained identical in every annual release. When interpreting a current entry, use the definitions and fields supplied with that release.

Career-long and single-year listings are not interchangeable

The career-long database aggregates indicators over the career period defined by the release. Researchers with decades of publication and citation history have had more time for their work to accumulate references, so this view is naturally influenced by career length.

The single-year database counts citations received in one calendar year. The original methodology presented this view partly as a way to reduce the advantage that comes simply from having more years in which to gather citations. It does not eliminate career-stage differences: early-career researchers generally have fewer papers and less time for those papers to be cited.

Interpretive question Career-long listing Single-year listing
Time window Career window ending in 2025 for version 9 Calendar year 2025 only
Main signal Accumulated citation impact Recent annual citation impact
Effect of career length Strong; older publication records have more accumulation time Reduced, but not removed
Best use Long-term bibliometric context Recent visibility relative to the same release
Required context Release, Scopus snapshot, field and self-citation treatment Release, Scopus snapshot, 2025 citation cutoff, field and self-citation treatment

When comparing two names, first put them in the same view. Comparing one person’s career-long entry with another person’s single-year entry creates an artificial contrast. Then check whether the figures include self-citations, whether both records use the same field or subfield context, and whether the entries come from the same version and Scopus snapshot.

What being listed means

Listing means that the author’s calculated indicators met the selection rule for that release. It tells you that the person’s publications generated substantial indexed citation activity relative to the comparison population and that the author profile could be assigned to the database’s fields and subfields.

It can be useful for locating highly cited researchers, studying patterns of scientific influence, or adding a bibliometric data point to a broader evaluation. A responsible description should name the release and specify whether the reference is career-long or single-year.

It does not mean the scientist is ranked first, that every paper is highly cited, or that the person is among the strongest contributors in every subject they touch. It means the indicators calculated for that author crossed a defined threshold under one particular data release.

What being listed does not prove

The database does not directly establish:

  • That every cited finding is correct, important or reproducible.
  • That the researcher made the largest intellectual contribution to every listed paper.
  • Teaching quality, mentorship, leadership or service.
  • Open-data, open-code or public-engagement practices.
  • Societal, clinical, policy or cultural impact that is not reflected in Scopus citations.
  • Research integrity beyond the limited retraction-related information included in the release.
  • Excellence across every part of a scientist’s career or every research area in which the person works.

Elsevier warns that websites can misleadingly present the database as “absolute evidence of excellence.” A person absent from a release simply did not reach that release’s composite-indicator threshold. Non-inclusion does not mean the person does poor work, and inclusion does not remove the need to inspect the underlying research.

Citation attention can arise for different reasons. A paper may be cited as a foundational result, a useful method, a controversial claim, a correction or an example of an error. The database records citation activity; it does not determine the sentiment or purpose of each citation. That is why the list is informative as one signal but insufficient as a stand-alone hiring, promotion, funding or integrity decision.

Self-citations: useful context, not a simple verdict

Version 9 supplies indicators calculated with and without self-citations. Comparing the two can show how much a result depends on citations from an author’s own publications or from publications by co-authors in the relevant citation relationships.

The original methodology paper notes that self-citation levels vary by field and circumstance. A high level may reflect legitimate cumulative research, large collaborative projects or a tightly defined specialty; an unusual pattern may also warrant closer examination. Removing self-citations mechanically does not resolve every possible concern, because citation practices and collaboration networks differ. Treat the two versions as diagnostic context rather than as an automatic “clean” and “unclean” score.

Historical figures illustrate why dates matter. In the 2019 paper’s 1996–2017 career-long dataset, the median self-citation percentage among the top 100,000 authors was 12.7%. In its 2017 single-year dataset, the median was 9.2%. Those values describe the older datasets analyzed in that paper, not version 9, and should never be presented as current medians.

Author profiles can change the result

Calculations use Scopus author profiles as they existed at the time of the snapshot. Scopus records can contain split profiles for one person or merged profiles for different people. A split record can undercount a researcher’s output; a merged record can attribute another person’s publications and citations to the wrong author.

Check the author’s name, affiliation, subject area, publication list and persistent identifiers before drawing conclusions. If the profile is wrong, use Scopus’s Author Feedback Wizard. A request is a correction route for a future annual update, not a way to edit an already archived version 9 file.

Profile quality is especially important for common names, transliterated names, name changes and researchers who have moved institutions. A result copied from a screenshot may omit the profile details needed to establish that the listed author is the person being discussed. Confirm the record before attaching a list entry to a biography, institutional announcement or news story.

Field and subfield comparisons need care

Percentiles are calculated within assigned categories, which is more informative than comparing raw citation totals across unrelated disciplines. Citation densities differ substantially: a publication in a field where references accumulate rapidly may receive more citations than an equally influential publication in a field with slower or less frequent citation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original paper cautions that comparisons between fields with different citation densities are tenuous. Very small subfields can also behave differently from broad categories, and classification errors can place a researcher in an unhelpful comparison group. When presenting a percentile, name the field or subfield and avoid treating it as a universal rank across science.

Use the percentile as context within the assigned category, not as a conversion into a global quality score. If two scientists work in different categories, explain that their raw counts and percentiles are generated against different citation environments. A broad field label alone may also hide meaningful differences between its subfields.

Retractions and research integrity information

Version 9 records retracted papers and citations to or from retracted papers. This is a valuable prompt for investigation, but it is not a complete integrity adjudication. A retraction may concern an honest error, an article-processing problem, misconduct or another circumstance; the database field alone does not explain the cause.

If a listing raises questions, inspect the individual publication record, the retraction notice and the relevant institutional or journal documentation. Do not infer misconduct solely from the presence of a retracted paper or from a citation involving one. Conversely, the absence of a retraction flag is not a certification that every publication is sound.

Why early-career comparisons are especially uncertain

Citation indicators have limited use when a researcher has published only a few papers or when those papers have had little time to attract citations. A low count can reflect recency rather than weak work, while a high count in a narrow, fast-moving area may not translate across fields. The single-year view helps describe recent activity but does not erase these timing effects.

For hiring, promotion, grants or collaboration decisions, combine bibliometrics with expert reading, contribution statements, reproducibility evidence, teaching and mentorship records, and the norms of the relevant discipline. Citation indicators should inform that review, not replace it.

A practical checklist for reading an entry

  1. Identify the release. Record “version 9” and its October 7, 2026 publication date rather than citing an undated screenshot.
  2. Record the data snapshot. Version 9 uses Scopus data captured on August 1, 2026.
  3. Name the view. Say career-long or single-year; for version 9, the latter covers citations received in 2025.
  4. Check the author profile. Look for split or merged records, name variants, affiliations and missing publications.
  5. Read the field assignment. Note the Science-Metrix field and subfield before comparing percentiles.
  6. Compare self-citation treatments. Review the indicators with and without self-citations, not just one headline number.
  7. Inspect the supporting metrics. Consider total citations, h-index, hm-index, author-position measures, citing-paper ratios and retraction-related information together.
  8. Check the selection route. Determine whether the entry reflects the top-100,000 c-score criterion, the version without self-citations, or the 2% subfield percentile threshold.
  9. State the limitation. Describe the result as citation impact in a Scopus-based release, not proof of overall excellence.

Historical figures that should not be presented as version 9 results

The original 2019 paper contains useful methodological examples, but its statistics describe older datasets and must not be relabeled as current figures. In its 1996–2017 career-long dataset, the median self-citation percentage among the top 100,000 authors was 12.7%. In its 2017 single-year dataset, the median was 9.2%.

The same paper reported 6,880,389 scientists with at least five papers in the Scopus population table it analyzed. It also reported 98% precision and 93.5% average recall for Scopus author profiles in a 2017 evaluation, with later improved figures reported in April 2019. Those are historical evaluations, not guarantees about current version 9 profiles.

The paper’s warning is concise: “Citation metrics are widely used and misused.” That is a useful rule for communicating any list result. State exactly what was counted, over which period and against which comparison group.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Stanford top 2% list mean?

It means the author met version-specific citation-indicator criteria: inclusion among the top 100,000 by c-score under the stated treatments or a percentile rank of at least 2% in an assigned subfield. It is a bibliometric designation, not a Stanford award.

How are scientists selected for the Elsevier top 2% list?

Elsevier calculates citation indicators from Scopus author profiles, including total citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index and author-position measures. Version 9 applies the top-100,000 and subfield-percentile rules described in its release record.

Does being listed prove research quality?

No. It documents citation impact in a particular Scopus snapshot. It does not prove correctness, reproducibility, originality, integrity, teaching quality, mentorship or broader social value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might a scientist be in the single-year file but not the career-long file?

The files measure different periods. The single-year file counts citations received in calendar year 2025, while the career-long file aggregates over the defined career window. Recent visibility and accumulated impact need not produce the same result.

Are self-citations excluded?

Version 9 provides metrics both with and without self-citations. Always state which treatment you are using. The difference is context, not an automatic verdict about the legitimacy of the author’s work.

Can a corrected Scopus profile change an old listing?

A correction can be considered for a future annual update through Scopus’s Author Feedback Wizard. It does not edit the archived version 9 release.

Is the list comparable across all disciplines?

Only with caution. The database supplies field and subfield context because citation densities differ. Comparisons between fields with different citation practices, or between very small subfields and broad categories, are tenuous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a retracted paper automatically disqualify a scientist?

No. Version 9 reports retracted papers and related citations as information to inspect. The record does not state why a paper was retracted, and the presence of a retraction is not by itself a complete integrity finding.

The right bottom line

The Stanford–Elsevier top 2% database is a detailed, standardized way to describe citation impact at a particular moment. It becomes informative when you identify the release, snapshot, time window, field, self-citation treatment, selection route and author profile behind the number. It becomes misleading when a citation-based inclusion is presented as an award, a universal ranking or proof that a researcher’s work is correct, ethical or valuable in every sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Stanford top 2% list mean?

It means the author met version-specific citation-indicator criteria in the Scopus-based database. It is not a Stanford award or a general judgment of excellence.

How are scientists selected for the Elsevier top 2% list?

Version 9 selects authors who are among the top 100,000 by c-score under the stated treatments or who reach at least the 2% percentile in an assigned subfield.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does being listed prove research quality?

No. It measures citation impact in a dated Scopus snapshot and does not prove correctness, reproducibility, integrity, teaching quality or wider social value.

Are self-citations included?

Version 9 reports indicators both with and without self-citations. The comparison should be treated as context, not as a simple clean-versus-unclean verdict.

Can a corrected author profile change version 9?

No. Scopus corrections may be considered in future annual updates, but the archived version 9 release is not retroactively edited.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Treat the Stanford–Elsevier top 2% entry as a dated, Scopus-based citation-impact signal. Name the version, snapshot, citation window, field, self-citation treatment and author profile, then combine it with substantive expert evaluation.
