It did not show that biological neurons literally use ReLU, or that brains learn in the same way deep-learning systems do. The distinction matters: engineering success and biological explanation are different achievements.
What was the ReLU revolution?
ReLU, short for rectified linear unit, is an activation function that returns zero for negative inputs and passes positive inputs through. Its simplicity made it a useful component in trainable artificial neural networks. Calling its adoption a “revolution” is shorthand for its part in the modern deep-learning story—not a claim that one function, or one paper, created deep learning.
Rectified responses predate their deep-learning prominence
ReLU did not begin solely as an engineering convenience. A 2023 review traces rectified responses in computational neural models to work including Fukushima (1975), before their later prominence in machine learning. The review presents ReLU as one representative advance in artificial neural networks, not an isolated invention that explains the field’s progress. Read the 2023 review.
The 2010 milestone was important, not sufficient
Nair and Hinton’s 2010 paper, Rectified Linear Units Improve Restricted Boltzmann Machines, made rectified units a visible machine-learning milestone by applying them to restricted Boltzmann machines. Its contribution belongs within a larger history rather than serving as the sole cause of modern deep learning. Read the 2010 paper.

Why ReLU helped artificial networks
In an artificial network, an activation function transforms a unit’s input before it is passed onward. ReLU’s piecewise-linear form is straightforward, and its use became part of the practical toolkit for training multilayer networks. That is an engineering claim: the function is useful in a particular computational system. It does not, on its own, explain how biological learning works.
The larger deep-learning shift involved more than activation functions. A 2019 Annual Reviews synthesis places the revolution often dated to the 2012 ImageNet competition in a longer context, noting that familiar convolutional-network building blocks had precedents in computational neuroscience. A 2016 review by Hassabis and colleagues emphasizes the distinct focus of machine learning: “Machine learning, in contrast, has largely focused on instantiations of a single principle: function optimization.” They describe backpropagation as an efficient way to compute weight gradients through multilayer networks. Optimization, backpropagation, architectures, data, and computing all belong in the account; ReLU is one ingredient among them. Read the 2016 review.

Is ReLU biologically plausible?
That depends on what “plausible” means. It is more useful to distinguish a resemblance in response shape from a mathematical connection between models, and both from a claim about actual biological mechanism.
Response-shape analogy
ReLU’s output is non-negative, which makes it compatible with a simplified description of firing rates that do not fall below zero. This is an analogy at the level of response shape. It does not establish that a neuron’s underlying electrical activity follows the exact ReLU formula.

Model-level correspondence
A 2022 paper examines mathematical relationships between leaky integrate-and-fire dynamics and ReLU in deep networks. Such a mapping can help researchers compare or analyze simplified models. It is not proof that biological neurons implement ReLU exactly: a correspondence between mathematical descriptions is weaker than evidence identifying a mechanism in the brain. Read the 2022 paper.
Mechanistic identity is a stronger claim
To say that neurons literally compute ReLU—or that brains learn by the same procedures used in deep-learning systems—requires evidence about biological mechanisms, not just a useful analogy or a model mapping. The reviews and modeling work discussed here do not establish either claim.

What biological plausibility asks of a model
“Biologically plausible” is not a yes-or-no label. Models can borrow a biological motif while remaining chiefly performance-oriented, or they can be constrained by observed neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. A 2024 primer draws this distinction and describes deep learning as a way to generate candidate models of brain function—not as an automatic guarantee that a high-performing network is a faithful account of neural mechanisms. These approaches answer different questions; neither standard makes one class universally superior. A model built to solve an engineering problem should be judged by its task, while a claim about brain function needs evidence that bears on biological structure and behavior.

What did ReLU reveal about the brain?
ReLU’s success revealed less about the brain than its biological inspiration might suggest. It showed that a compact, neuron-inspired computation can be powerful in artificial systems. The history also shows that neuroscience and machine learning have influenced one another, while pursuing different aims and standards of explanation.
The defensible conclusion is measured: rectified responses have earlier computational-neuroscience precedents, and rectified units later became useful in deep learning. That coexistence makes ReLU a productive bridge for questions and hypotheses—not evidence that artificial networks and biological brains are the same kind of learner.
