Separate searches for narrowband, periodic, or otherwise artificial radio emissions found no credible technosignature. The evidence therefore supports 3I/ATLAS as a natural interstellar comet, not a spacecraft transmitting an intentional message.
What is 3I/ATLAS?
3I/ATLAS is the third confirmed interstellar object observed passing through the Solar System, after 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov. The NASA-funded ATLAS survey telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile, first reported it on July 1, 2025. “3” means third confirmed object in this category, “I” means interstellar, and “ATLAS” identifies the discovering survey.

Its strongly hyperbolic orbit shows that it is not bound to the Sun. NASA classifies it as a comet because telescopes observed a coma and outgassing. Hubble-based estimates put the nucleus somewhere between roughly 440 meters and 5.6 kilometers across, a wide range because the active coma makes the solid nucleus difficult to measure. See NASA’s 3I/ATLAS facts and FAQ and mission overview.
It passed closest to the Sun around October 30, 2025, at approximately 1.4 astronomical units. Its closest approach to Earth was about 1.7–1.8 astronomical units, roughly 167 million miles, on December 19, 2025—not a near-Earth threat according to NASA and the International Astronomical Union.

What MeerKAT actually detected
MeerKAT in South Africa detected hydroxyl, or OH, at the molecule’s 1665 and 1667 megahertz radio transitions. The first detection was OH absorption on October 24, 2025, when the object was more than 350 million kilometers from Earth. Additional absorption appeared on November 4 and 6, followed by OH emission on November 11–12. The lines occurred at the expected velocity for gas associated with 3I/ATLAS.
This is a chemical fingerprint, not a broadcast. Sunlight breaks water released from an active comet into products including hydroxyl. Radio telescopes can identify OH through its precise spectral lines, much as an optical spectrograph identifies an element by its characteristic colors. SARAO described the changing absorption and emission pattern as expected cometary behavior.

The same MeerKAT campaign also searched for narrowband technological signals between 900 and 1670 MHz. It found none, with a reported transmitter-power limit of approximately 0.17 watts under the observation’s assumptions. The natural OH result and the technosignature search were two different analyses of the same observing program. Read the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory report.

| Observation type | What astronomers look for | What it means here |
|---|---|---|
| Molecular spectral line | A known molecule at a precise frequency and velocity | OH from water-related cometary activity was detected |
| Radio-frequency interference | Signals from Earth, satellites, instruments, or other local sources | Many raw candidates in SETI searches were filtered as interference |
| Narrowband technosignature | A very concentrated carrier, often localized to the moving target | No credible candidate survived the dedicated searches |
| Periodic or modulated signal | Repeating or information-bearing structure inconsistent with ordinary chemistry | No credible periodic technosignature was reported |
Calling the OH observation “a signal from 3I/ATLAS” is technically accurate only when the word signal means a measurable molecular signature. Calling it a message, transmission, or broadcast changes the meaning and is unsupported by the observation.

What targeted searches for technology found
Multiple facilities looked for artificial radio emissions using different frequencies, dates, algorithms, and signal assumptions. Their results constrain particular kinds of transmitters; they are not a universal test for every imaginable technology.
| Telescope or program | Search and coverage | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Allen Telescope Array | 7.25 hours in July 2025; 1–9 GHz | Tens of millions of raw narrowband hits were reduced to 211 candidates for visual inspection. None warranted technosignature follow-up. The study reported an effective isotropic radiated power limit of approximately 10–110 watts. |
| MeerKAT/BLUSE | Narrowband search; 900–1670 MHz | No narrowband technological signal; approximately 0.17-watt transmitter limit under the stated assumptions. |
| Green Bank Telescope/Breakthrough Listen | December 18, 2025, less than 24 hours before closest approach; approximately 1–12 GHz | No artificial radio emission localized to 3I/ATLAS. The analysis reported a nondetection down to about the 100-milliwatt level under its relevant assumptions. |
| FAST | Four observing dates from October 2025 through January 2026; approximately 1.05–1.45 GHz | No credible narrowband technosignature; analyzed scenarios constrained transmitters above approximately 2.862 milliwatts. |
| FAST periodic-signal analysis | Separate search for repeating artificial radio signals | No credible periodic technosignature above approximately 0.146 watts in the analyzed data. |

Why the broader evidence points to a comet
The natural-comet interpretation does not rest only on SETI searches finding nothing. Several independent observations point in the same direction:
- A hyperbolic trajectory establishes an interstellar origin, not an artificial one.
- Optical observations show a coma and outgassing.
- MeerKAT detected OH associated with water-related activity.
- Webb observations found a carbon-dioxide-rich coma and later detected methane.
- The observed changes in OH absorption and emission followed the pattern expected as sunlight alters the comet’s gas environment around solar passage.
NASA’s Webb results are reported at this chemistry overview and in its methane detection report. These measurements support chemical and evolutionary inferences about a comet formed in another planetary system; they do not identify a specific parent star.

What a nondetection can—and cannot—prove
“No technosignature detected” means that no credible signal meeting a study’s criteria appeared in the searched data. It does not prove that every possible artificial explanation is impossible. A transmitter could operate outside the covered frequencies, transmit intermittently, beam away from Earth, use a signal type the analysis did not test, or remain passive. Effective isotropic radiated power limits also depend on assumptions about distance, beaming, bandwidth, and detectability.
Those caveats do not make the searches meaningless. Across independent instruments and methods, they found no verified narrowband or periodic radio emission associated with 3I/ATLAS, while ordinary cometary signatures were repeatedly observed. On the evidence available, the natural explanation is overwhelmingly better supported.
How to evaluate the next “alien signal” headline
- Identify the instrument. A named telescope and observing team are more informative than a dramatic video title.
- Check the frequency. A known molecular transition is different from an unexplained narrowband carrier.
- Ask whether it was emission or absorption. Both can be natural spectral signatures.
- Look for chemical identification and target velocity. Matching a known molecule at the object’s expected velocity strongly favors a physical association.
- Check interference handling. Large raw hit counts often include terrestrial radio interference and instrument artifacts.
- Read the sensitivity limit. A nondetection constrains specific transmitter powers and signal assumptions; it is not an all-purpose proof of absence.
- Look for independent observations. A claim supported by coma, outgassing, molecular lines, and repeated searches is stronger than a single unexplained feature.
The bottom line
MeerKAT did detect a radio signature from 3I/ATLAS, but it was OH produced by sunlight-driven cometary chemistry. It strengthened the case that the interstellar visitor is an active natural comet. Dedicated searches by MeerKAT, the Allen Telescope Array, Green Bank, and FAST found no credible artificial radio signal. That does not establish a metaphysical impossibility, but it provides no evidence that 3I/ATLAS is an alien spacecraft or that it sent an intentional message.
