A ratchet turns the socket. An extension adds straight reach between them. An adapter changes the square drive size so parts of different sizes can connect. A universal joint, which many sets include, lets you turn a fastener from an angle. Once you know which problem each piece solves, a case full of metal pieces is easy to read.
How the pieces connect
Think of a chain: fastener → socket → (extension, adapter or universal joint) → ratchet → your hand. Each link has two ends. One end grips the next part, and the other end is a square connection called the drive. The only thing that has to match at each joint is the size of that square.

- Socket opening must match the fastener (its size and measurement system).
- Socket drive must match the square on the ratchet or extension.
These are two separate matches. Mixing them up is the most common beginner mistake.
What each piece does
Sockets
A socket is the part that fits over a bolt head or nut. It attaches to a compatible drive tool, most commonly a ratchet. When you compare sets, look at two things: the measurement system (metric, SAE/inch, or both) and the drive size. Where relevant, also check whether the set has standard sockets, deep sockets, or both. Deep sockets help when a bolt end or stud sticks out past the nut.

Ratchets
The ratchet is the hand drive. It turns the socket and lets you move the handle back and forth through repeated strokes, so you don’t have to take the socket off the fastener between turns. Ratchets differ between products. The specifications describe one tool, not all ratchets. For example, CRAFTSMAN’s 20-piece 1/4-inch-drive set lists a 72-tooth ratchet with a 5-degree arc swing. A higher tooth count generally means a smaller swing is needed to engage the next tooth. That figure is the manufacturer’s listed spec for that product, so check each product’s own listing.
Extensions
An extension sits between the drive tool and the socket to add straight reach. TEKTON describes it this way: “Attach an extension to your drive tool for reaching past obstructions or into tight, narrow spaces with your socket.” (TEKTON 3/8 Inch Hand Drive 4-Piece Extension Set). That set lists lengths from 1 to 10 inches. Short extensions suit shallow clearance problems. Longer ones suit fasteners at the bottom of a recess.

- Wide application: This socket wrench set is perfect for home improvement, carpentry tools, construction, auto repair, woodwork, and other DIY projects. This tool makes for a beautiful unique gift for men on various occasions like Father's Day, Birthday or anniversary.
Adapters
An adapter changes the drive size so differently sized drive tools and sockets can connect. TEKTON’s example is adapting a 1/4-inch-drive tool to 3/8-inch-drive sockets (TEKTON 1/4 Inch Drive Extension and Accessory Set with Rail). An adapter fixes only a drive mismatch. It cannot make a socket of the wrong size fit a fastener. If the socket opening doesn’t match the bolt head, you need a different socket.
Universal joints
A universal joint is separate from an adapter. It pivots, so you can turn a fastener that isn’t in line with the handle. TEKTON describes its universal joint as a way to “Reach around obstructions and access fasteners at an angle.” Use one when an extension alone can’t clear the obstruction, such as a bracket or a pipe in the way.

Which piece solves which problem
| Problem | Piece to reach for |
|---|---|
| Fastener is deep in a recess, straight on | Extension |
| Obstruction blocks a straight approach | Universal joint (often with an extension) |
| Ratchet and socket have different drive sizes | Adapter |
| Socket won’t fit the fastener | A different socket size or system, not an adapter |
| Long bolt end sticks out past the nut | Deep socket |
Drive sizes
Drive size is the size of the square connection, not the socket opening. Sets commonly cover 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-inch drive. Accessory sets can span several of these; for instance, CRAFTSMAN’s 21-piece accessory drive set is an example of contents across drive sizes. Keep the following in mind when choosing a drive size:
- A single set usually sticks to one drive size unless it is a large multi-drive kit.
- Extensions and universal joints have to match the drive of the ratchet and socket they connect, unless you use an adapter.
- Adapters let you reuse what you own, but each one adds a joint and some length. Where you can, use parts of the same drive size.
How to choose a set
Piece count is a weak guide. CRAFTSMAN’s examples run from a 20-piece 1/4-inch-drive set to a 728-piece set spanning multiple drive sizes and tool types. The larger one isn’t better unless your work needs those pieces. Compare sets on these points:

- Measurement system: metric, SAE, or both, matched to the fasteners you actually work on.
- Drive size: and whether the sockets suit your ratchet.
- Standard and deep sockets: whether you have both if your tasks need them.
- Ratchet head and listed arc swing: smaller swing helps in cramped spaces.
- Extension lengths: and whether they cover the depths you work at.
- Adapter or universal joint: whether the kit has them if your access problems call for them.
If a set lacks extensions or joints, you can add a standalone extension set in the matching drive size.

A note on force
Keep a ratchet and socket squarely seated on the fastener, and avoid forcing a socket that doesn’t fit snugly. The manufacturer pages used here don’t cover torque limits or the use of impact tools, so check the guidance for your specific tool before using extra leverage or power tools.
