What the Norman Conquest Changed in England’s Castles and Landscape

The Norman Conquest brought a major expansion of castle-building in England, adding fortified strongholds that could secure military power, house elites and support local administration. Many early castles used earth-and-timber motte-and-bailey designs, but there was no single blueprint: builders adapted existing sites and local terrain, and some castles became centres around which towns and estates were organised.

How Norman castles worked

A motte-and-bailey castle paired a large artificial mound—the motte—with a defended enclosure, or bailey. A timber tower and palisade often stood on the mound; banks and ditches could protect the adjoining enclosure. The elevated motte offered a defensive position and a visible statement of authority, while the bailey provided room for activity and buildings.

Castles were not only battlefield structures. They could serve as military strongholds and garrisons, aristocratic residences, and centres of royal or local administration. The mix of functions varied by site and changed over time.

Castle-building expanded after 1066, but it did not mean England had lacked fortifications before the Normans. English burhs and other strongholds already existed. The change was the introduction or rapid expansion of the castle as a form of military and political control.

Why location and design varied

A castle’s position could help dominate a locality, command a route or crossing, or reuse an earlier fortified place. Terrain and the needs of the people controlling a site shaped its design. Motte-and-bailey castles were common, but some were ringworks—roughly circular banks and ditches, often topped by a palisade—or strongly defended enclosures without a motte. Hybrid forms also existed.

Castle defences evolved rather than following one universal timetable. Some timber defences were later replaced by stone; stone keeps became more common in the 12th century, followed by changes that placed greater emphasis on outer defences. That sequence does not mean every early castle was quickly rebuilt in stone.

English Heritage quotes the chronicler Orderic Vitalis: “The fortifications that the Normans called castles were scarcely known in the English provinces, and so the English – in spite of their courage and love of fighting – could put up only a weak resistance to their enemies.” This is Orderic as quoted by English Heritage; the page excerpt does not identify the edition or translation.

Four places show how castles reshaped local landscapes

Eye: a castle at the heart of a planned town and estate

Historic England dates the start of Eye Castle in Suffolk to 1066–1071, under William Malet. Built on a natural spur between waterways, the castle became a defining feature of the planned Norman town. Malet’s Honour of Eye was a large landholding spread across several counties. His son Robert made Eye the centre of the estates and established a market, deer park and priory. The site’s later history includes further fortification and decline. Eye illustrates how a castle could anchor a town and estate, but its particular development should not be taken as a pattern for every settlement.

Castle Acre: castle, town and priory together

At Castle Acre in Norfolk, the surviving castle, planned town and priory make the wider physical changes associated with the Conquest especially visible. The castle began in a hybrid form between motte-and-bailey and ringwork. Its landscape evidence also points beyond the fortification itself to the organisation of land around a castle residence.

Thetford: a river crossing and an earlier enclosure

Thetford Castle Hill is a medieval motte-and-bailey castle built into an earlier Iron Age enclosure, at an important crossing of the Thet and Little Ouse rivers. The castle is believed to have been built shortly after the Conquest, but its builder is uncertain: Historic England identifies Ralph Guader or Roger Bigod as possibilities. Buried earthworks and deposits preserve evidence of medieval and earlier occupation.

Hallaton: a castle with evidence of activity and an inferred estate role

At Hallaton in Leicestershire, an elevated motte adjoins a bailey. Excavations have found evidence of activity including iron-working in the bailey. Historic England says the castle seems likely to have been the administrative centre of an estate described in Domesday. That is an archaeological interpretation, not a certainty.

What the evidence can—and cannot—show

Domesday records landholding and changes since 1066, helping historians trace who held land and how it was used. Historic England connects Hallaton to an estate described in the survey. But Domesday is not a complete inventory of castles or a record of every physical change to the landscape; it should be read alongside archaeological and site evidence.

Two often-cited figures describe different things and should not be treated as competing counts:

Figure What it counts Scope and qualification
Over 600 Motte castles or motte-and-bailey castles recorded nationally Historic England’s undated list entry, accessed in 2026. This is a monument class, not a count of every castle built after 1066 or every surviving castle site.
Around 1,000 Castles built in England and Wales over 150 years English Heritage’s undated page, accessed in 2026. Its geography, period and subject differ from Historic England’s figure.

The examples also show why no single castle or town can stand for all of England. Form, setting, function, relationship to settlement and the survival of archaeological evidence differ from place to place; some origins and roles remain interpretations rather than established facts.
