The chapter does not discuss the old regime, according to a PTI report—but that is a limit of the lesson, not an end to taxpayers’ legal choices.
Where income tax appears in the Class 9 curriculum
The topic is included in Understanding Society India and Beyond—Part 2, in a chapter titled “Managing Your Personal Finances,” according to a PTI report published by Careers360 on 1 October 2026. The report says the book was released after the 2026–27 academic year had begun. [Careers360/PTI]
The setting is consistent with CBSE’s published Class IX curriculum for 2026–27, which lists Social Science among the subjects. The Ministry of Education said on 10 August 2026 that NCERT had brought out new syllabi and textbooks for Grades 1–9 as part of the NEP/NCF-aligned curriculum rollout. Those official sources establish the broader curriculum context; they do not independently confirm the chapter’s specific wording. [CBSE curriculum] [Ministry of Education]
The PTI report characterizes the addition as a first for this age group. That is the report’s description; the available sources do not independently establish that no earlier Class 9 textbook covered personal income tax.

What the chapter reportedly teaches about tax
According to PTI, the book introduces a slab system and shows students how to calculate tax liability using slabs under the new regime. The report reproduces the textbook’s line: “India follows a slab system for calculating income tax as shown in table.” It also says the chapter does not mention the old regime. [Careers360/PTI]
The report does not provide a directly verified copy of the full slab table or its tax-year label. For that reason, exact brackets, rebate amounts, deductions and worked calculations cannot be reliably stated here. The useful takeaway is the method the lesson reportedly introduces: tax is explained through income slabs, rather than through a single rate applied to everyone.

How the tax lesson fits into personal finance
Tax is one part of a broader chapter, not a standalone tax-law unit. PTI describes the chapter as covering income, budgeting, saving, investing, and protection or risk management. Examples of investments named in the report include fixed deposits, bonds, stocks or equity shares, and mutual funds; these are textbook examples, not recommendations. [Careers360/PTI]
The report also quotes the book’s broader framing: “Managing money wisely is not just about earning more, it is about making careful financial decisions at every stage, whether it involves spending, saving, investing, protecting against risks, borrowing responsibly or paying taxes.” PTI says the chapter calls paying taxes “honestly and on time” an “important responsibility of every citizen.” These passages are attributed to the textbook as reproduced by the report; the book’s primary text was not independently inspected. Does the book’s focus mean the old tax regime is abolished?
No. The chapter’s reported focus on new-regime slabs does not determine which regimes exist under tax law. Business Standard reports that the new regime became the default on 1 April 2023, while eligible taxpayers may still choose the old regime under applicable rules. This is general context, not individualized tax advice; taxpayers should consult current official guidance for the rules that apply to their circumstances. [Business Standard]
In other words, the distinction is between what one school chapter teaches and the options available to eligible taxpayers. A textbook’s decision to explain one system is not an announcement that the other has been removed.

What students and parents can take from the update
- It is a personal-finance lesson: the reported chapter places tax alongside everyday money decisions, rather than treating it as an isolated formula.
- It introduces slab-based calculation: the report says students see the new regime, but does not establish the complete table or which tax year it represents.
- It is not a guide to choosing a tax regime: the reported material does not compare the regimes or advise which is preferable for a taxpayer.
