What the Key Icon Means on Android and How VPN Status Indicators Work

A key-shaped icon in Android’s status bar usually means a VPN is connected. On Pixel phones, Google says the Key appears when VPN by Google is connected, and Google Fi gives the same interpretation for its Android VPN indicator. The icon tells you that a VPN connection is active; it does not tell you which VPN service is responsible, whether every app is using it, or what configuration the service is applying.

To identify the connection, open Settings and search for VPN. On devices that expose the standard menu, go to Network & internet > VPN. From that screen you can see the configured service, disconnect it, and—when the option is available—check whether Always-on VPN is causing it to reconnect.

What the key icon means

The key symbol is Android’s general visual cue for an active virtual private network. A VPN creates a managed network tunnel between the phone and a VPN endpoint. Android places the key in the status bar so you can see that a VPN connection is currently established without opening the VPN app.

Google’s Pixel Phone Help states: When the VPN is connected, at the top of your screen, you’ll find the Key. Google Fi’s Android instructions likewise describe the key icon as confirmation that its VPN is connected. These statements apply to the services and devices covered by those guides; Android manufacturers can change the exact drawing, color, placement, or visibility of status icons in their own interfaces.

  • It does mean: Android has an active VPN connection for at least one configured service.
  • It does not identify: the VPN owner, the server location, the protocol, or the subscription behind the connection.
  • It does not prove: that every app’s traffic is traveling through the VPN.
  • It does not indicate: that a physical key, screen lock, or hardware accessory is connected.

If your phone shows a symbol that only resembles a key, compare it with the VPN entry in Settings rather than relying on its shape. Status-bar artwork is not identical across Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and other Android software versions.

How to find which VPN is active

Android’s Settings search is the most reliable starting point because menu names differ by manufacturer and Android release.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap the search field or magnifying-glass button and enter VPN.
  3. Open the result named VPN, VPN settings, or a similarly worded entry.
  4. Read the service marked as connected or active. The name may belong to a VPN app, VPN by Google, Google Fi, or an organization that manages the phone.
  5. Tap that service to view the controls available on your device.

On Android builds that use Google’s standard navigation, the same screen is under Network & internet > VPN. If Settings search returns nothing, open the network section manually and consult the phone manufacturer’s support instructions. A VPN configured entirely inside an app may send you from Android Settings into that app for connection and disconnection controls.

What the VPN screen can show

The screen normally distinguishes configured services from the one currently connected. It may show a switch, a gear icon, a disconnect button, an Always-on setting, or a link to open the provider’s app. The labels vary, but the purpose is the same: use this page to establish which service owns the tunnel before changing anything.

Why the icon does not prove that every app uses the VPN

Android VPN configurations can apply to all applications, allow only selected applications, or exclude selected applications. Therefore, the key reports connection state, not routing scope. A connected VPN with an app allowlist can leave browsers, games, or work tools outside the tunnel by design.

VPN configuration What the key icon tells you What you still need to verify
All-app routing A VPN tunnel is connected and the configuration is intended to cover normal device traffic. Whether individual apps use their own network path or are exempted by policy.
Allowed-app list The VPN is active for the applications selected by the administrator or VPN app. Which applications are on the allowlist.
Excluded-app list The VPN is active, but named applications bypass it. Which applications are excluded and why.
Work-managed configuration An organization’s VPN policy is active. Whether personal, work-profile, or both sets of apps are covered.

Look for per-app controls in the VPN app or in the service’s Android settings. If no routing details are shown, treat the icon only as a connection indicator. Do not infer that a particular website, game, or streaming app is protected merely because the key is visible.

Always-on VPN: why the key keeps returning

Android can start a VPN at boot and keep trying to maintain it through an Always-on VPN setting. This is useful on a managed phone or for someone who wants a VPN present whenever the device is online, but it also explains why the key can reappear after you disconnect it manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether Always-on is enabled

  1. Open Settings and search for VPN.
  2. Open the active VPN service.
  3. Look for Always-on VPN or a similarly named switch.
  4. Turn it off if you want the VPN to remain disconnected.

Google notes that VPNs configured through an app may not expose the Always-on control in exactly the same Settings flow. In that case, open the VPN app and inspect its connection, auto-connect, startup, or always-on preferences.

Persistent failure notifications

An Always-on VPN can produce a notification when Android cannot reconnect. Google’s documented way to clear that persistent Always-on failure notification is to disable Always-on for the affected VPN. Simply swiping away the notification may not solve the underlying policy that keeps attempting reconnection.

Turning off Always-on changes connection behavior; it does not uninstall the VPN or erase its profile. You can reconnect it later from the same screen or from the VPN app.

Different VPN owners change the controls

The same key icon can be produced by different types of VPN, and the owner determines where you manage it.

VPN by Google on Pixel

Pixel’s official help identifies the Key as the indicator shown when VPN by Google is connected. Open Settings, search for VPN, and follow the service entry shown there for status and available controls. Pixel’s wording is authoritative for Pixel devices covered by that help page, not a guarantee that another manufacturer will draw an identical icon.

A personal VPN app

A third-party VPN app can create the Android VPN profile and may provide its own connect, disconnect, server, protocol, split-tunneling, or auto-connect controls. Android Settings can still show the profile, but tapping it may open the app. If the key remains after you think you disconnected, check both places: the Android VPN page and the app’s connection screen.

Google Fi

Google Fi’s Android guidance also uses the key to indicate a connected VPN. If Fi is the listed service, manage the connection through the Fi controls presented on your phone. The icon alone does not distinguish Fi from another active VPN profile.

A work profile or device administrator

Organizations can manage VPN settings through Android Enterprise. Administrators may define managed configurations, specify an application allowlist, or use a block-without-VPN policy that prevents selected work apps from connecting unless the tunnel is available. A work policy can also restrict your ability to disconnect or edit the profile.

If the VPN entry is greyed out, immediately reconnects, or is labeled as managed, contact the organization’s administrator before deleting the profile. Removing a work profile or changing its VPN policy can affect access to company data and may violate workplace rules.

What to do if you want to remove the key

Removing the icon means ending the VPN connection or changing the setting that keeps it active. Use this sequence rather than uninstalling apps at random.

  1. Identify the service. In Settings, search for VPN and note which profile is connected.
  2. Disconnect it. Open the profile and tap Disconnect, Turn off, or the equivalent control. If Android opens an app, use that app’s disconnect command.
  3. Disable Always-on. If the key returns, open the profile’s settings and switch off Always-on VPN. Check the VPN app as well when Android does not show that option.
  4. Check auto-connect rules. Some apps reconnect on Wi-Fi, mobile data, at startup, or when an untrusted network is detected. Disable only the rule you do not want.
  5. Recheck the status bar. Give Android a moment to tear down the tunnel, then confirm that the VPN screen says disconnected.

Do not disable a company-managed VPN solely to hide the icon. The icon may be required for access to work resources, and a block-without-VPN policy can stop managed applications from connecting.

Troubleshooting common situations

The key appears immediately after every reboot

Most likely, Always-on VPN or an app’s startup setting is enabled. Inspect both the Android VPN profile and the VPN app. On a managed phone, the administrator may have imposed the setting, in which case only that administrator can change it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key disappears, then comes back on certain networks

An automatic connection rule may be tied to Wi-Fi, cellular data, or network trust. Review the VPN app’s auto-connect and trusted-network settings. If the phone is managed, a policy can intentionally require the tunnel on specific networks.

Settings shows no VPN, but an icon remains

Use Settings search again and restart the phone if the status display appears stale. Confirm that the symbol is actually the VPN key; manufacturers use other small icons for security, private DNS, device management, and active calls. If the icon’s design or menu does not match Google’s Pixel guidance, consult the manufacturer’s support documentation for that model and Android release.

The VPN says connected, but one app seems to bypass it

Check whether the VPN uses an allowed-app or excluded-app list. A work profile can also separate work and personal traffic. The key cannot answer this question; only the VPN configuration or administrator can.

An Always-on error will not clear

Open the VPN profile, turn off Always-on VPN, and then reconnect manually if needed. If the switch is unavailable or locked, the profile may be app-managed or administrator-controlled. In that case, use the app’s controls or contact the device administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and privacy limits of the indicator

The key is a status signal, not a security audit. It does not show whether the VPN server is reachable from every network, whether a connection dropped for a moment, which apps are exempted, or what data the VPN operator can observe. It also does not guarantee that an app has stopped using a separate connection method such as its own proxy or an independent encrypted channel.

For a practical check, verify three separate facts: the service listed in Settings, the routing scope configured for that service, and whether Always-on or management policy controls reconnection. Keeping those facts distinct prevents the common mistake of treating one small icon as proof of complete-device coverage.

Why Android instructions differ by phone

Google’s official material establishes the key behavior for Pixel, Google Fi, and standard Android settings, while Android Enterprise documents managed VPN behavior. It does not establish identical icon rendering or identical menu paths for every manufacturer and release. Android skins can move VPN under a different network heading, rename switches, or hand control to an installed app.

When your screen differs, start with Settings search for VPN. If that fails, use the manufacturer’s help for your exact model and Android version. This approach is more reliable than guessing from an icon’s shape or following a menu path copied from a different phone.

Quick reference checklist

  • Key icon visible: a VPN connection is probably active.
  • Need the owner: Settings > search VPN.
  • Need to stop it: open the listed profile and disconnect; then check Always-on.
  • Icon returns: inspect Always-on and app auto-connect rules.
  • One app bypasses the tunnel: review allowed and excluded apps.
  • Controls are locked or managed: ask the work or school administrator.
  • Menu or icon looks different: follow support for the exact phone model and Android release.
