The adult male orcas known as Port and Starboard have been linked to documented great-white-shark attacks off South Africa. In one 2024 observation, a roughly 2.5-metre juvenile white shark was incapacitated and its liver eaten in less than two minutes. Starboard has also been observed removing a shark’s liver while hunting alone.
Did orcas really kill great white sharks?
Yes. This is not based only on viral photographs or shark carcasses found on beaches. Peer-reviewed observations and institutional reporting describe killer whales attacking white sharks in South African waters, rapidly disabling them and selectively eating the liver.

The clearest recent case, reported in the African Journal of Marine Science in 2024, involved an approximately 2.5-metre juvenile great white. Researchers recorded incapacitation followed by liver consumption within less than two minutes. The Natural History Museum’s 2024 account separately reports that Starboard removed a great-white liver in about two minutes during a solo attack.

Who are Port and Starboard?
Port and Starboard are adult male orcas repeatedly associated with white-shark predation around South Africa. Their names refer to distinctive dorsal-fin features used by observers to tell them apart. Starboard is the individual directly observed attacking a white shark alone; reports also associate the pair with attacks occurring in the same broader region.
The 2022 study in Ecology documented direct observations of killer whales preying on white sharks and recorded a flight response among surviving sharks. In other words, the event affects more than the individual being eaten: nearby sharks may leave or avoid waters where the orcas are present.

How the attacks work
- Approach and control: The orca rapidly overpowers the shark, preventing it from swimming away or defending itself effectively.
- Incapacitation: The shark is disabled quickly. In the 2024 juvenile-shark observation, this stage occurred immediately before feeding.
- Selective feeding: The orca opens the body cavity and consumes the liver while leaving much of the rest of the carcass.
The 2024 report places incapacitation and liver consumption within less than two minutes. Starboard’s observed solo attack took about two minutes to remove the liver. Those measurements apply to the reported encounters, not to every orca–shark interaction.

Why do orcas eat the liver?
The studies establish the preference, but they do not prove a single biological explanation for it. A great-white liver is large and energy-dense, so selecting it could provide a high nutritional return for a short, dangerous encounter. That is a plausible interpretation, not a confirmed statement of the whales’ motivation.

Selective feeding also explains why several sharks washed ashore with their livers removed. A missing liver is consistent with the documented behaviour, but a carcass alone cannot identify which orca made the kill without supporting observation, identification or footage.

The larger effect: a “fear” landscape
The most important ecological result may be displacement rather than the number of sharks killed. The 2022 research recorded surviving white sharks leaving or avoiding affected areas after killer-whale predation. This is a documented behavioural response often described as a fear effect.

Moving away can change where sharks hunt, rest and encounter prey. It can therefore alter local food-web patterns even when direct kills are relatively infrequent. However, the available observations do not yet settle how long the displacement lasts, how many sharks relocate, or whether the change affects the wider South African population. Those are active research questions, not established conclusions.
Where can you watch the Shark Week orca programme?
Warner Bros. Discovery has promoted a Shark Week whodunnit about sharks washing ashore with their livers removed and an investigation into orca hunting behaviour. The programme is offered through HBO Max, but the title, launch date and availability can vary by territory, subscription arrangement and the current catalogue. Check the HBO Max listing for your country rather than assuming that a US announcement applies everywhere.

A television documentary can present additional footage and interviews, but its narrative is separate from the peer-reviewed observations. The scientific evidence for Port and Starboard’s attacks stands on those published observations and documented field records.
