The Google app search bar is also a voice interface, camera tool, text scanner, visual homework helper and, for eligible users, a conversational AI workspace. Tap the microphone to ask for directions or a calculation, tap Lens to identify an object or act on text in a photo, use Search Live for a spoken back-and-forth conversation, or open AI Mode to combine text, voice, images and files in one question. Which options appear depends on your device, permissions, language, country, age and Google’s current rollout.
What inputs does the Google app search bar accept?
You are not limited to typing keywords. The search bar can receive several kinds of input:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Spoken requests: Voice Search handles questions and commands such as finding a nearby business, checking weather, translating a phrase, defining a word, converting units or solving a calculation.
- Camera or photo input: Google Lens can analyze a live camera view, a new photograph or an image already stored on your device.
- Selections inside images: Lens lets you isolate text or a particular object so the result is narrower than a search for the entire picture.
- Conversational follow-ups: Search Live supports spoken turns, while AI Mode accepts follow-up questions after an initial text, voice, image or file prompt.
- Screen selections: Circle to Search can search or translate content displayed on selected Android phones.
These inputs are useful because they let you show or say what you mean instead of describing it with keywords. They do not all have the same availability or accuracy, so choose the feature that matches both your input and your goal.
Use Voice Search for practical requests
How to start a voice search
- Open the Google app.
- Tap the microphone icon in the search bar.
- When listening starts, speak your request in a normal sentence.
- Review the result and refine it with another query if needed.
Voice Search is suited to direct tasks where you already know what you want. Google’s examples include “Where’s the closest coffee shop?” and “How do you say cucumber in Spanish?” You can also ask for directions, weather, a definition, a unit conversion or a mathematical calculation.

Requests Voice Search handles well
- Nearby places: Ask for a coffee shop, bus stop, ATM or another place close to you.
- Navigation: Request directions to a destination.
- Language help: Ask for a translation of a word or phrase.
- Reference answers: Request a definition or the weather.
- Calculations: Speak an arithmetic problem or unit conversion rather than entering symbols manually.
Some voice searches work only in particular languages, countries or regions. If the microphone button is missing or a spoken command produces a different result, check the language and regional settings associated with your Google app and device.
Turn a camera or photo into a Lens search
Identify an object or find similar images
- Tap the Lens icon in the Google app search bar.
- Take a photo, point the camera at the subject, or upload an existing image.
- Let Lens analyze the image and review the object results, similar images and related web pages.
- Drag the selection handles or tap a smaller region when only one part of the image matters.
This is useful when you cannot name what you are seeing. A close-up of an object can return information about that object; selecting a logo, plant, garment or other visual detail can narrow the search to that element. Lens may also show pages that contain the same image or a visually similar one.
Improve visual results
- Fill the frame with the object you want to investigate.
- Use even lighting and avoid glare or heavy shadows.
- Hold the phone steady so text and edges are sharp.
- Select a smaller area when the full image contains several unrelated subjects.
The exact path can differ between the latest Google app and Google or Chrome app interfaces. If a Lens control is not where these steps place it, look for the Lens camera icon inside the search field or image-search controls.
Read and act on text in a picture
Lens is more than visual identification. When it recognizes text, select the words or frame the relevant section, then choose an available action. Depending on what was detected, Lens can let you:

These actions depend on successful recognition and the context of the selection. A blurry sign, stylized typeface or incomplete number may not produce every option. For sensitive information, verify the recognized text before calling, messaging, opening a link or navigating to an address.
Get guided help with homework through Lens
How to use the Homework option
- Open Lens from the Google app.
- Choose Homework when that option is shown.
- Photograph the question or upload an image of it.
- Review the explanation or steps Lens provides, then check the original problem against the response.
Google describes Homework as assistance for math, science, word, geometry and diagram problems. It can be useful for seeing an approach or identifying the step you do not understand. Treat the output as help rather than a guaranteed answer: image quality, unusual notation and the problem’s wording can all affect the result, and an AI-generated explanation may contain mistakes.
Have a spoken conversation with Search Live
What makes Search Live different?
Search Live is designed for a back-and-forth voice exchange instead of one dictated query. Google Search Help describes it as: “With Search Live, you can have back-and-forth voice conversations with Search and use your camera to show Search what you see.” You can ask a follow-up without restating the whole situation, and you can turn on the camera during the conversation when showing the scene would help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStarting and using Search Live
- Open the Google app and tap Live when the control is available.
- Allow microphone access if prompted.
- Ask your first question aloud.
- Continue with follow-up questions; enable the camera when you want to show what you are looking at.
- Check linked sources when the answer affects an important decision.
The cited Google help instructions describe Search Live for English-speaking users in the United States who are 18 or older. Rollout and controls can change, so a missing Live button may reflect eligibility or availability rather than a device fault. Google also warns that AI responses may contain mistakes.

Ask broader questions in AI Mode
AI Mode is a separate interaction layer for questions that benefit from exploration and follow-ups. It can accept text, voice, images and files, then let you continue asking questions about the same subject. To begin, open AI Mode from the Google app home screen or use the Ask anything bar when that entry point appears.
A useful workflow is to provide the main question first, add an image or file when it contains essential context, and then ask a focused follow-up about an unclear point. AI Mode can surface web links for further checking. Because Google says Search settings are being updated, the exact labels and path may not match every account or app version. Treat generated statements as provisional and open the linked sources when accuracy matters.
Search what is on your screen with Circle to Search
Circle to Search works from the screen of selected Android phone models. Invoke the feature using the phone’s configured gesture or button, then select the text or image region you want to investigate. It can search screen content, translate visible text and, in eligible contexts, search for music.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This is different from Lens because you do not need to save or retake a photograph first. Eligibility is limited to selected models, and individual subfeatures can vary. If the gesture does nothing, confirm that your phone model and software support Circle to Search and that the feature is enabled in the device’s settings.

Which search feature should you choose?
| What you provide | Best for | Typical action | Important access or limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spoken request | Nearby places, directions, weather, translation, definitions, conversions and calculations | Tap the microphone and ask aloud | Some commands depend on language, country or region |
| Live camera view or photo | Identifying objects and finding similar images | Tap Lens, take or upload a photo, then select an area | Requires camera or photo access; image quality affects recognition |
| Selected text in an image | Copying, translating, searching or acting on contact, address, link and tracking information | Use Lens to select the text and choose an action | Actions appear only when Lens recognizes the content and context |
| Homework image | Math, science, word, geometry and diagram problems | Lens > Homework, then photograph or upload the problem | Provides assistance, not a guarantee of correctness |
| Conversational voice plus optional camera | Exploring a subject through follow-up questions | Tap Live and continue speaking; turn on the camera if useful | Cited help describes English, US users aged 18 or older; microphone permission is required |
| Text, voice, image or file with follow-ups | Broad questions that need an ongoing investigation | Open AI Mode or use the Ask anything bar | Interface and availability are changing; verify important claims |
| Selected screen content | Searching or translating something already displayed, and some music searches | Invoke Circle to Search and select the screen region | Available only on selected Android models |
Permissions determine what the bar can do
Google’s permissions guidance connects each capability to device access:
- Camera: Enables Lens to translate text, search objects and provide details about places viewed through the camera.
- Photos and files: Lets Lens search photos, screenshots and other image files stored on the device.
- Microphone: Enables spoken input for Voice Search and is needed for Search Live.
- Location: Can make local searches, such as coffee shops, bus stops and ATMs, more useful.
You can review these permissions in your phone’s app settings. Denying one does not remove every search function, but it prevents the related input method from working until access is restored. Location is particularly worth checking when a “near me” result seems too broad or is centered on the wrong place.
Accuracy, privacy and safe use
Check generated answers
Search Live and AI Mode can produce fluent responses that are nevertheless wrong. For medical, legal, financial, travel or safety decisions, follow the linked sources and confirm critical details independently. Lens recognition should also be treated as a lead: confirm an object’s identity before relying on it, and proofread text before sending a message or opening a link.
Recommended Free Tools
Limit what you share
A camera or uploaded image can include people, documents, addresses or other private details outside the subject you intended to search. Crop or select only the relevant area when possible, and avoid uploading confidential material unless you understand the account and device settings governing that information.
Best Value
Expect changing controls
Search Live, AI Mode and selected-device features are being rolled out and adjusted. The button name, location or eligibility shown in your app may differ from another person’s. Use the current Google app or Google/Chrome app, install available updates, and check the relevant feature’s help screen when a documented control is absent.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The microphone or Lens icon is missing
Confirm that you are using the Google app or a supported Google/Chrome app interface, then check microphone, camera and photo permissions. A work or school account, language choice or regional rollout can also change which controls appear.
Lens misreads the image
Retake the picture with better lighting, move closer, hold the phone steady and select a tighter region. For text, make sure the entire line or number is visible; partial characters often remove actions such as translation, calling or tracking.
A local result is not local
Allow location access, state the city or neighborhood in the spoken request, and check that the device’s location setting is enabled. A query such as “closest coffee shop” relies on location context that may be unavailable when permission is denied.
Live, AI Mode or Circle to Search is unavailable
Availability may be the explanation rather than a fault. Search Live’s cited eligibility is English, United States and age 18 or older; Circle to Search is restricted to selected Android models; AI Mode’s entry points are changing. Verify account, region, language, age and device eligibility before resetting the app.
Quick Recap
A practical way to combine the features
- Start with the simplest input: speak the request if you can describe it clearly.
- Show instead of describe: use Lens when the object, sign, document or scene is easier to capture than to name.
- Narrow the result: select the exact object or text region rather than submitting a busy image.
- Continue only when needed: use Search Live or AI Mode for follow-up questions that depend on context from the first answer.
- Verify before acting: check sources and recognized text before making a decision, contacting someone or navigating anywhere.
