What the ChatGPT Windows App Can Do That the Web Version Can’t (2026)

Short answer: the ChatGPT Windows app’s clearest advantages are a system-wide Companion Window, direct Snipping Tool and webcam capture, and—when your plan and workspace allow it—access to local files, desktop applications, terminals and developer tools. It also includes a separate in-app browser. Those are workflow differences, not a wholesale feature victory: the web version already supports uploads, data analysis, Voice, Canvas, Memory and Projects, and many desktop features depend on account, region, permissions and rollout.

If you mainly ask questions in a browser, the app may feel faster rather than fundamentally smarter. It becomes more useful when you frequently switch between ChatGPT and other Windows work, need to capture what is on screen, or want approved local computer context.

The practical differences at a glance

Workflow Windows app Web version What the difference means
Quick access Companion Window opens with Alt+Space while the app is running. Open ChatGPT in a browser tab or window. The app can put a small chat over other Windows work without returning to the main app.
Screen capture Windows release notes document inserting a Snipping Tool capture of a window, full screen or custom region. You can still upload an image or screenshot that you captured separately. The app integrates the capture step into the conversation workflow; this does not prove that the web service cannot accept screenshots.
Camera capture Release notes document taking a webcam photo directly into a conversation. Camera and image-upload behavior depends on the browser and account. The desktop path is more direct when you need a quick photo of a physical object or document.
Local computer context Eligible Work and Codex experiences can use permitted local files, folders, repositories, terminals, desktop apps and developer tools. Work and Codex Cloud run in the cloud; normal web chats do not automatically see your computer. This is the most meaningful difference for developers and people working with local documents.
Built-in browser A desktop browser with its own state, tabs, navigation, downloads and sign-in. Uses the browser in which you opened ChatGPT. The desktop browser keeps its account state separate from your ordinary browser profile. It is also available on macOS, so it is not Windows-exclusive.
Voice Voice in desktop Work or Codex is available to eligible accounts, with computer-context permissions where required. Live Voice is also documented on the web. Desktop Voice can work alongside local Work or Codex, but Voice itself is not a Windows-only feature.

OpenAI describes the Windows app as an “early version” and says that some web or macOS features may not be available. Because the support page is updated over time without a complete parity matrix, check the controls in your own app instead of treating an old list of missing features as permanent. See OpenAI’s Windows app help page.

Use the Companion Window for instant chats

The Companion Window is the most obvious Windows-specific convenience. With ChatGPT already running, press Alt+Space to open a compact chat without switching back to the main window. OpenAI says it can be used to ask a question, upload files, generate a new image or start a conversation.

#1 Best Overall

“You can use the Companion Window to instantly ask ChatGPT anything, upload files, generate a new image, or start a new conversation.”

The window remembers its last position. After an app reset, it returns to the bottom center of the screen. If another Windows application already owns Alt+Space, change the shortcut at Settings → App → Companion window hotkey. The shortcut works only while the Windows app is running; it is not a browser-wide hotkey.

When it saves time

  • Draft or rewrite text while another application remains in the foreground.
  • Ask about a file without navigating through the full ChatGPT interface.
  • Generate an image or open a fresh conversation during a meeting or research task.
  • Keep a short-lived assistant window available without adding another browser tab.

This is a faster entry point, not a separate model or a guarantee of different answers. Your plan, workspace policy and normal account limits still apply.

Capture a screen or webcam photo from inside the app

The Windows release notes document two integrated capture paths. On November 14, 2024, the app added screenshot capture through Snipping Tool. You can select a single window, the entire screen or a custom region, then insert that capture into a conversation. On November 7, 2024, the notes documented taking a webcam photo and attaching it directly to a conversation. The dated entries are recorded in Windows App – Release Notes.

Screen-capture workflow

  1. Open the ChatGPT Windows app and a conversation.
  2. Choose the app’s screenshot or Snipping Tool capture control.
  3. Select Window, Full screen or Custom region.
  4. Confirm the capture so it is inserted as an attachment.
  5. Add a specific instruction, such as “Extract the error message” or “Compare the two visible totals,” before sending.

The web version can analyze an image that you save or otherwise capture and then upload. The distinction is that the Windows app documents the capture action as part of the chat flow, reducing the save-and-upload steps. Do not interpret this as proof that web ChatGPT cannot receive screenshots.

Webcam-photo workflow

  1. Open a conversation in the Windows app.
  2. Select the webcam-photo option.
  3. Allow camera access if Windows requests it.
  4. Take the photo, review it and attach it to your message.
  5. Tell ChatGPT what to inspect: text, damage, a label, a handwritten note or another visible detail.

A built-in camera is not required by the documentation. If your PC has no suitable camera, a USB webcam may be used, but it is an optional accessory rather than a Windows-app requirement.

Give Work and Codex approved access to local computer context

The desktop app can do something a normal browser chat cannot do by default: an eligible Work setup may use local files and desktop applications after you grant permission. Codex can work with local folders, repositories, terminals and developer tools. This lets a task operate on the computer where the files and tools actually exist, rather than requiring you to upload everything or move it to a cloud workspace.

OpenAI distinguishes this from cloud workflows. Work on the web and mobile runs in the cloud, and Codex Cloud is a separate cloud experience. Local tasks run on your computer, although messages and task context may still be stored in the cloud. Availability depends on your plan, workspace configuration and the permissions you approve. The distinctions are described in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

What local context enables

  • Read or work with files in an approved local folder instead of uploading each file manually.
  • Inspect a local code repository and use the repository’s existing development tools.
  • Run or assist with terminal-based workflows where your organization permits it.
  • Use desktop applications as part of a Work task when the integration and workspace policy support them.

What it does not mean

  • The app does not receive unrestricted access to every file on your PC automatically.
  • Local access is not available to every plan, workspace or region.
  • Codex is a distinct desktop view and is not simply the same history experience as ChatGPT on the web or mobile.
  • Cloud Work and Codex Cloud remain available as separate workflows; installing the Windows app does not turn every web task into a local task.

For sensitive company data, confirm what your administrator allows, which folders are approved and how task context is retained before granting access.

Use a separate in-app browser

The ChatGPT desktop app includes a built-in browser on both Windows and macOS. It maintains browser state separate from your ordinary browser and supports page navigation, tabs, downloads and sign-in. OpenAI’s documentation also describes richer browser functions such as autofill, password management and extensions, with availability depending on plan and workspace. See Using the built-in browser in the ChatGPT desktop app.

This can be useful when you want a dedicated research session that does not mix with personal browser tabs or existing cookies. You can sign in to a site inside the app, move across tabs and download files within that browser context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not evidence that ordinary web ChatGPT lacks browsing or web search. The comparison is between a desktop-embedded browser and the browser you already use to visit ChatGPT. Workspace administrators may restrict browser use, particular websites, file transfers, history access or saved approvals. Those controls can make the built-in browser less capable in a managed organization.

Use desktop Voice with Work or Codex, but do not call Voice Windows-only

Eligible workspaces can use Voice in Work or Codex on Windows and macOS. Microphone permission is required; computer context may additionally require Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions. The permission and desktop requirements are covered in OpenAI’s Work and Codex documentation.

Voice itself is available in more places. OpenAI documents Live Voice in Chat on the web, iOS and Android, as well as Voice in the desktop app for eligible workspaces. Video and screen sharing are documented for eligible subscribers on iOS and Android using Advanced Voice; Live Voice does not support those functions. Access can vary by plan, workspace settings, region, app version and parental controls. The current platform details are in ChatGPT Voice.

Therefore, the Windows advantage is the combination of desktop Voice with approved local Work or Codex context—not exclusive access to conversational Voice.

What the web version already does

Installing the app does not unlock the basic ChatGPT capabilities that many people assume are desktop-only. OpenAI’s capabilities overview documents a broad cross-platform baseline, including supported file and audio uploads, data analysis, Voice, Canvas, Memory and Projects. Availability still depends on plan and account. Consult ChatGPT capabilities overview for the current baseline.

Requirements, installation and organization controls

System requirement

The Windows support page lists Windows 10, x64 or arm64, version 17763.0 or higher. The app is distributed through Microsoft Store, so access to the Store may be controlled by your organization. Enterprise and Education administrators may deploy it with mobile-device or mobile-application management tools such as Microsoft Intune. OpenAI also documents winget installation support in a January 30, 2025 release entry. Verify the current deployment method with your IT team if Store access is blocked.

Before you install

  • Confirm that your Windows build meets the requirement.
  • Check whether your plan or workspace includes Work, Codex, desktop Voice or the built-in browser.
  • Ask an administrator whether Microsoft Store apps, local folders, camera, microphone or screen-recording permissions are restricted.
  • Decide whether local execution is appropriate for the files and repositories you handle.

Permissions to expect

Camera and microphone prompts are normal for capture and Voice. Screen and Accessibility permissions may appear when computer context is used. A permission prompt is not proof that a feature is available: the plan and workspace must also allow it.

Which should you use?

Your situation Best fit Reason
You mostly ask questions, upload occasional files and use Projects or Canvas. Web or Windows app Core capabilities overlap; choose the interface you prefer.
You repeatedly jump between another Windows application and short ChatGPT requests. Windows app Alt+Space opens the Companion Window without changing your main workspace.
You analyze screenshots, window errors or physical objects often. Windows app Integrated Snipping Tool and webcam capture reduce handling steps.
You need ChatGPT to work with an approved local repository or terminal. Windows app with eligible Work or Codex Local context is the substantive desktop distinction.
You need isolated cloud execution or cannot grant local permissions. Web Work or Codex Cloud Cloud workflows avoid depending on your PC being available and approved.
You want a dedicated browsing session with separate sign-in state. Desktop app browser Its tabs, cookies and downloads are separate from your usual browser profile.

Common problems and fixes

Alt+Space does nothing

Make sure the Windows app is running, then check Settings → App → Companion window hotkey. Another Windows application may have claimed the shortcut. Choose a different key combination and test it again.

The capture or camera control is missing

Update the app, check Windows camera permissions and confirm that your workspace has not disabled capture. The release notes establish the dated features, but the support page warns that feature availability can differ by app version, account and rollout.

Local files are not visible

Local Work and Codex require an eligible plan, workspace approval and permission for the relevant folder or application. If those conditions are not met, use a supported upload or a cloud workflow instead of assuming the app has unrestricted computer access.

The built-in browser cannot open a site or download a file

Workspace administrators can restrict websites, downloads, file transfers, history access and saved approvals. Ask the administrator whether the restriction is intentional; changing browsers locally may not override an organization policy.

Voice works on the web but not in desktop Work

Check microphone permission first, then Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions if computer context is involved. Also verify workspace eligibility, because desktop Work or Codex Voice has separate availability from ordinary web Voice.

Bottom line

Choose the Windows app for speed of access, integrated screen and camera capture, or approved local computer work. Keep using the web version if your needs are ordinary chat, uploads, analysis, Voice, Canvas, Memory, Projects or cloud tasks. The app is a different operating surface, not a promise that every feature is newer or stronger; plan, workspace, region, permissions and rollout determine what you actually see.
