What Telemetry Should MSSPs Collect for Ransomware Threat Hunting?

Managed security service providers (MSSPs) need a connected evidence set, not a single alert feed. Collect endpoint, identity, remote-access, network, DNS, and cloud control-plane telemetry, then correlate it against each client’s assets, users, processes, and normal administration patterns. That coverage lets a hunt reconstruct an intrusion from initial access through privilege escalation, lateral movement, defense evasion, backup or log tampering, data theft, and encryption.

The collection is valuable only when it is consistently enabled, retained long enough, protected against attacker changes, and monitored for gaps. CISA’s ransomware guidance calls for centralized, secured logs and proactive hunts across enterprise and cloud environments.

The telemetry baseline for ransomware hunting

The following sources form a practical baseline. An MSSP can add deeper data when a client’s risk, architecture, legal obligations, or an active investigation justifies the volume and privacy cost.

Telemetry area Events to collect Questions it helps answer
Endpoint and host Process creation and lineage, scripts, executable activity, file changes, services, scheduled tasks, security alerts, and host connections What executed, under which account, what changed, and which systems did it contact?
Identity and remote access Authentication, account and group changes, privilege assignment, privileged use, VPN and remote-access logins, directory audits Was an account created or elevated, and was access consistent with the user and location?
Network and DNS Firewall, IDS, VPN, device events, flow records, sessions, DNS queries and responses Did a host move laterally, contact command-and-control infrastructure, tunnel traffic, or transfer unusual volumes?
Cloud and SaaS Sign-ins, IAM and security-policy changes, discovery, network configuration, storage and snapshots, sharing, and data movement Did an identity enumerate resources, weaken controls, alter snapshots, or move data across accounts or regions?

Correlate every event with a client, asset, identity, time zone, and retention policy. Record source health and known gaps so an analyst can distinguish “no activity” from “no telemetry.”

Endpoint and host telemetry

Process, script, and file activity

Capture process creation with parent-child lineage, command lines where permitted, executable and script execution, file creation and modification, and the initiating user. Lineage can expose a suspicious script launched by an office process, a service account spawning an interactive shell, or a trusted tool used outside its normal context.

Preserve Windows Security and PowerShell logs where applicable. CISA’s LockBit advisory notes that PowerShell history can reveal operating-system and registry interaction and show how an actor used the host. Security-product detections, quarantine actions, and prevention results should flow into the same timeline rather than remain isolated in an endpoint console.

Persistence, recovery, and defense-evasion changes

Monitor creation or modification of services and scheduled tasks, unexpected software installation, and changes to boot configuration, disk journaling, backup settings, and shadow copies. These events can mark persistence, preparation for encryption, or attempts to remove recovery options. Treat precursor malware and unusual administrative utilities as hunt leads even when an endpoint product has not classified them as ransomware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record host network connections with the process and user that initiated them whenever the endpoint platform supports that association. EDR can expose unusual processes and lateral connections; Sysmon is cited by CISA as a way to monitor indicators and malicious file creation. The aim is not to collect every possible debug event, but to retain enough context to connect execution, modification, and communication.

Identity and remote-access telemetry

Authentication and directory changes

Collect successful and failed authentication, account and group creation or modification, privilege assignments, privileged-account use, and relevant directory audit events. Include service-account activity and changes to authentication policies where available. A newly created directory account, a sudden group-membership change, or a privilege assignment immediately before broad file access deserves a timeline review.

VPN, RDP, and remote administration

Ingest VPN and other remote-access logins with username, source address, device or client details, authentication method, and timestamps. Hunt for unusual geographies, impossible travel, unfamiliar devices, repeated failures followed by success, and access outside the user’s established schedule. Correlate remote sessions with endpoint process creation and network connections so a suspicious login is not evaluated in isolation.

Remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools require a client-specific baseline. Authorized technicians and the MSSP’s own tooling can resemble attacker behavior. Document approved accounts, maintenance windows, source networks, and expected commands; alert when the same tooling appears from an unapproved identity, host, or time.

Network and DNS telemetry

Flow, firewall, and session records

Retain firewall, IDS, VPN, and network-device events alongside flow or session records. At minimum, preserve source and destination, protocol, timestamps, ports where available, and transfer volumes. This metadata can reveal lateral connections, scanning, unusual command-and-control patterns, and abnormal outbound transfers even when packet payloads are unavailable.

DNS context

Preserve DNS queries and responses and associate them with the requesting host. If the environment supports it, link the query to the initiating process or user. Look for newly registered or rarely seen domains, high-frequency lookups, algorithmically changing names, tunneling indicators, and DNS activity that begins immediately after suspicious execution.

When packet or session content is justified

Packet or session content can add detail beyond flow metadata, particularly during a focused investigation or where tunneling is suspected. Full capture also increases storage, privacy, and operational burden; it is not a requirement for every client. Choose targeted capture based on the environment, legal constraints, and the question the hunt must answer. CISA examples include tunneling over HTTPS and common exfiltration tools, while MITRE treats flow metadata and DNS logging as relevant evidence.

Cloud and SaaS audit telemetry

Control-plane and identity events

Cloud endpoint logs alone are insufficient. Enable provider audit and control-plane events for sign-ins and identity changes, IAM and security-policy changes, network configuration, resource discovery, storage and snapshot operations, and data movement. Preserve the actor identity, source IP, region, user agent, target resource, action, result, and timestamp where the provider exposes them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enumeration followed by impact

Alert on unusual identities, source addresses or regions, user agents, and discovery rates. Correlate listing and enumeration with later instance or snapshot changes, storage-policy updates, new sharing permissions, and high-volume or cross-account transfers. A burst of resource discovery followed by weakened IAM controls or snapshot deletion is more significant than any one event by itself.

Protect cloud logging configuration and destinations against deletion or alteration. CISA advises enabling logging across resources and alerting on abnormal use. Ensure an account that can administer production resources cannot silently erase the audit trail for those resources.

How to correlate telemetry into a hunt

A ransomware investigation should produce a single, ordered narrative rather than a pile of alerts. Use a common time source and normalize identities, host names, cloud resource IDs, IP addresses, and process identifiers.

  1. Establish the suspected start. Begin with the first encryption alert, ransom note, unusual file operation, suspicious sign-in, or high-confidence endpoint detection.
  2. Work backward to initial access. Review remote-access authentication, identity anomalies, exposed services, DNS lookups, and the first unusual process or script on the affected host.
  3. Trace privilege escalation. Match account and group changes, new service creation, scheduled tasks, credential use, and administrative logons to the same user, host, and time window.
  4. Map lateral movement. Join endpoint connections with firewall, VPN, flow, and authentication records. Identify reused accounts, remote administration, and systems contacted by the same process or source.
  5. Check defense evasion and recovery impact. Search for log-clearing, security-tool changes, boot-configuration edits, shadow-copy or backup manipulation, and disabled collection.
  6. Look for theft or staging. Compare DNS and flow volumes with file-access, archive-creation, cloud-storage, sharing, and cross-account transfer events.
  7. Preserve volatile evidence. During an incident, capture memory and firewall buffers before they disappear, and export relevant logs in a tamper-evident form.

Retention, integrity, and collection health

CISA, MS-ISAC, NSA, and the FBI’s September 2023 #StopRansomware Guide says to “Retain and adequately secure logs from network devices, local hosts, and cloud services.” It recommends maintaining and backing up critical-system logs for a minimum of one year, if possible. This is guidance, not a universal legal mandate; assess client-specific regulations, contracts, privacy commitments, and the retention limits of each platform separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Centralized log management or a SIEM should correlate host and network security events and maintain an auditable chain of custody. Store copies where the systems being monitored cannot delete or rewrite them. Use access controls, immutable or append-only storage where appropriate, encryption, and alerts for logging configuration changes.

Check collection health regularly. A disabled agent, expired cloud subscription, broken parser, clock drift, dropped network feed, or exhausted storage tier can create the appearance of a quiet environment. Track last-seen time, event volume, parser status, and coverage by client and asset. When a source fails, open an operational incident rather than waiting for the next hunt.

MSSP operating model and client safeguards

Make context part of every event

Map each source to the client, asset, owner, identity, time zone, environment, and retention policy. Maintain inventories of critical servers, domain controllers, backup systems, cloud accounts, and approved administrative tools. Without this context, analysts cannot reliably separate a sanctioned maintenance action from lateral movement.

Control provider access

CISA warns that MSP access and tooling can become a risk path. Apply least privilege, separate duties, use strong authentication, and monitor the MSSP’s own accounts and RMM activity. Keep client environments logically separated, limit standing privileges, and require an auditable approval path for emergency access.

Agree on action before an alert arrives

Contracts and runbooks should define who can isolate a host, disable an account, block an address, preserve evidence, contact the client, and notify legal or regulatory teams. Establish severity thresholds and response time targets for high-confidence findings. Collection without an agreed action model produces delay at the moment containment matters.

Choosing tools without choosing a vendor

CISA supports EDR, IDS, and SIEM as technology categories but does not endorse a specific provider. Compare options on the following axes:

  • Coverage: endpoint, identity, network, DNS, remote access, cloud control plane, and SaaS data.
  • Context: event detail plus host, process, identity, resource, and session relationships.
  • Retention and integrity: export, long-term storage, tamper alerts, access controls, and recovery of deleted or delayed events.
  • Correlation and hunting: joins across time, clients, hosts, identities, cloud resources, and custom baselines.
  • Operational fit: multitenant separation, role-based access, parser maintenance, timezone handling, and coverage reporting.
  • Data burden: event volume, bandwidth, storage, privacy exposure, licensing, and analyst workload.

Do not assume that a framework’s named event is available in every tenant or license. Validate the actual fields, export behavior, retention period, and alerting controls in each client environment.

MITRE ATT&CK references and version awareness

MITRE ATT&CK’s Data Sources page states that data sources were deprecated in version 18, released in October 2025, while remaining available as reference material. Newer detection strategies are more behavior- and analytics-oriented. Relevant pages include Network Traffic Content (last modified 12 May 2026), Active DNS (21 October 2025), Cloud Infrastructure Discovery (12 May 2026), Cloud Service Discovery (12 May 2026), and Cross-Platform Detection of Data Transfer to Cloud Account (created 21 October 2025). Use these as mapping and detection-design references, not as a guarantee that a particular provider exposes every event.

Common collection failures and fixes

Only endpoint alerts are retained

Problem: The MSSP sees a malicious file but cannot determine how the actor entered, which account was used, or where data moved.

Fix: Add identity, VPN, DNS, flow, firewall, and cloud audit feeds and normalize their timestamps and identifiers.

Logs exist but attackers can erase them

Problem: A compromised administrator disables logging or deletes evidence from the affected system.

Fix: Forward events to protected centralized storage, alert on configuration changes, and maintain an independent backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RMM activity generates constant false positives

Problem: Legitimate provider actions look like lateral movement or remote execution.

Fix: Baseline approved tools, accounts, source networks, and maintenance windows; alert on deviations rather than the tool name alone.

Cloud activity is invisible

Problem: The client collects virtual-machine logs but not IAM, storage, snapshot, discovery, or transfer events.

Fix: Enable provider control-plane and resource logging, protect the log destination, and test that events arrive after policy and identity changes.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Inventory client endpoints, identities, remote-access systems, network devices, cloud accounts, storage, backups, and security tools.
  2. Define the minimum event fields and map each source to an asset, identity, time zone, owner, and retention policy.
  3. Enable endpoint, Windows Security, PowerShell, directory, VPN, firewall, IDS, flow, DNS, and cloud audit collection where applicable.
  4. Forward logs to centralized, access-controlled storage with independent backup and tamper or deletion alerts.
  5. Build client-specific baselines for administrators, RMM use, remote access, cloud regions, user agents, and normal transfer volumes.
  6. Create correlation rules for privilege changes, new services or tasks, backup and log tampering, lateral connections, enumeration followed by cloud changes, and abnormal outbound transfer.
  7. Test source health, parser accuracy, clock synchronization, retention, export, and incident-time evidence preservation.
  8. Run scheduled hunts and review gaps with the client; update coverage when assets, providers, or regulatory requirements change.
