Read the three together to understand opportunity and deployment—not to prove a receiver’s skill, efficiency, or future production.
What each metric measures
Snap share: overall offensive deployment
Snap share is a player’s offensive snaps divided by the team’s total offensive snaps. It indicates how often he is on the field, but it does not show what he was asked to do on each snap. A receiver may be present to block, run a route, or take part in a formation-specific assignment.

Route participation: involvement in passing plays
Route participation measures how often a player runs a route when the team drops back. StatRankings defines it as the percentage of team dropbacks on which the player runs a route. It narrows the view from all offensive snaps to availability in the passing game. Routes are not targets: a player can run a route without receiving a pass.

In the cited glossary, target share is a player’s targets divided by the team’s pass attempts. It describes his portion of the team’s passing volume, not his portion of routes. The same target share can yield different target totals depending on how often the team throws.

Definitions and denominators can vary by provider. Snap Count Picks explains the three measures in its NFL usage stats glossary; StatRankings details its own route-participation calculation in Route Participation | NFL Advanced Stats.

| Pattern | What it may indicate | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| High snap share, high route participation, high target share | The receiver is broadly deployed, runs routes on many passing plays, and receives a large slice of team targets—a strong opportunity-role signal. | Target quality, catchability, route value, stability of the role, or the team’s total passing volume. |
| High snap share, lower route participation | The receiver is often on the field but may block, play in run-oriented situations, or appear in formations where he is not a route runner. | The exact reason; that requires formation and play context. |
| High route participation, modest target share | The receiver is available on many passing plays but receives a smaller portion of attempts. | Why he is targeted less. Quarterback decisions, coverage, route design, target quality, and how targets are distributed may all matter. |
| High target share, low snap or route volume | Targets may be concentrated on the receiver when he is involved. | Whether the percentage is stable or the role will expand. Check actual route and target counts and the sample size. |
These are interpretation guides, not official role labels or universal thresholds. Snap share, routes, and targets alone do not establish that a player is a starter, slot receiver, or “alpha.”
Check the denominator and the opportunity pool
Route participation and target share use different bases: dropbacks and pass attempts. Those totals are not interchangeable. StatRankings says its dropback denominator includes quarterback scrambles and excludes plays negated by penalty; its player calculation also counts games missed. Those conventions affect the meaning of a percentage, so compare players using the same provider and method.

Route data can also depend on how routes are identified. NFL Next Gen Stats describes a tracking-based recognition model trained and validated on passing plays from the 2018 and 2019 regular and postseasons, with separate wideout and backfield route categories. In that historical model, wideout routes were capped at the forward pass or 4.6 seconds after the snap, whichever came first; backfield routes were capped at the forward pass or 4 seconds. These are details of that model, not universal rules for every provider’s route counts. See the NFL’s Next Gen Stats route-recognition methodology.
Share rates are relative to team totals. To estimate a target count, apply target share to expected team pass attempts; a higher share on a low-volume passing offense can still mean fewer targets than a lower share on a team that throws more often.

Compare receivers without overreading small differences
- Use the same source and window. Keep provider, season or game span, and denominator conventions consistent.
- Put rates beside counts. Compare offensive snaps, routes or dropbacks, targets, team pass attempts, and team dropbacks alongside the percentages.
- Account for missed games and role context. Disclose the sample window and how the source treats games missed; compare a player with himself across game or season segments when assessing a role change.
- Separate opportunity from results. These measures describe usage. If the question is whether a receiver converts opportunities effectively, look at separate receiving production or efficiency evidence.
A small percentage gap may not be meaningful without the underlying counts and context. Even a clear opportunity advantage does not by itself predict future output.
What route-level data can—and cannot—add
NFL Next Gen Stats published historical averages for wideout routes in the 2018–19 seasons; “wideout” in that article includes players aligned wide, in the slot, or tight. Go routes made up 22.3% of wideout routes and had a 10.8% target rate; WR screens made up 3.4% and had a 40.7% target rate. The same table reports a 27.8% target rate for out routes and 25.2% for slants.

Those figures illustrate why route frequency and target frequency are different: a common route need not be targeted often, and a less common route can have a higher target rate. They are historical averages from the NFL article’s particular model, not current benchmarks for evaluating a receiver. The NFL article describes route classification as a way to contextualize the passing game, but these rates do not explain the value or outcome of any one player’s routes.
