Its portfolio covers touch and display control, fingerprint sensing, wireless connectivity, audio and video processing, graphics interfaces, multimedia chips, image processing and edge-AI computing. The company generally supplies the technology inside laptops, docks, cars, headsets, smart-home devices, streaming equipment and industrial products rather than selling those finished products under the Synaptics name.
What does Synaptics do?
Synaptics is a fabless semiconductor and embedded-platform supplier. Device manufacturers use its integrated circuits (ICs), system-on-chips (SoCs), processors, microcontrollers, firmware and development software when they design a product that needs human input, wireless communication, media handling, sensing or local computing.

That distinction matters. A laptop with a Synaptics touchpad controller is made by the laptop manufacturer, not by Synaptics. A USB-C dock that uses DisplayLink technology is assembled and sold by a dock brand, while Synaptics supplies the graphics technology in some models. An automotive display, smart speaker or security camera can likewise contain Synaptics silicon without being a Synaptics-branded finished device.
The company organizes its technology around several overlapping jobs:

Product names, wireless standards and availability can change by model and region. A portfolio category does not mean every feature is present in every chip; the relevant product brief and software-support list determine the actual specification.
Touch, display and biometric chips
Touchpads and touchscreens
Synaptics develops controllers that convert a finger, stylus or other contact into digital input. In a laptop touchpad, the controller detects position, movement, gestures and sometimes pressure-related information, then passes that data to the host computer. In a phone, vehicle display or other touchscreen, a touch controller measures changes in the electrical field across the panel and reports touches to the main processor.
These controllers are the part that lets an OEM tune palm rejection, multi-finger gestures, response characteristics and interaction reliability. The visible glass, touchpad surface and industrial design still come from the device maker or its manufacturing partners.

Display-driver and touch-and-display ICs
Display-driver ICs control the electrical signals that illuminate pixels. Combined touch-and-display devices put display driving and touch sensing into a coordinated component, helping a manufacturer reduce board space and simplify system design. Such parts can be used in mobile devices, computers, vehicle screens and other displays.
Fingerprint sensing
Fingerprint sensors provide biometric input for authentication. Synaptics supplies the sensing component and associated technology; the finished device maker determines where the sensor appears, how enrollment works and how authentication is integrated with its operating system and security architecture.
Wireless connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and IoT links
Synaptics’ connectivity portfolio includes wireless SoCs and products for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, DECT/ULE and broader IoT use cases. A wireless SoC can combine radio circuitry, a processor, memory interfaces and software support in one package, reducing the number of separate components an OEM must place on its board.
These technologies can appear in connected appliances, wearables, smart displays, audio products, gateways and industrial equipment. The practical specification depends on the exact part: supported frequency bands, throughput, Bluetooth profile support, positioning features, antenna design, security functions and operating-system drivers all vary. Synaptics’ portfolio description establishes the capability categories, but a product’s current documentation should be used to confirm a particular standard or feature.

DisplayLink graphics technology
DisplayLink is Synaptics’ USB-oriented graphics technology. A compatible dock or adapter can use it to send display data over a host connection, allowing manufacturers to build multi-display and peripheral-expansion products around a common interface architecture. DisplayLink technology is present in some docks and adapters, not all of them.
For a real dock, compatibility must be checked at the individual model level. Important questions include:
- Which host operating systems and processor platforms are supported?
- Does the dock require a DisplayLink driver or use an alternate video mode?
- How many displays can operate simultaneously?
- What resolutions and refresh rates are supported for each output combination?
- How much USB-C power delivery is available to the host?
- Which ports remain usable when all displays and high-speed peripherals are connected?
A DisplayLink-capable dock is therefore a downstream example of Synaptics technology, not proof that Synaptics manufactures or sells that particular dock.

Meeting rooms and virtual reality
Video-interface components can also be used in meeting-room systems and VR headsets, where timing, bandwidth, connector support and reliable multi-display handling are central design requirements. The headset or room system manufacturer selects the rest of the hardware and software stack.
Audio, voice and headset processing
Synaptics supplies audio DSPs and SoCs for voice processing, smart speakers and connected devices. A digital signal processor can perform tasks such as microphone-stream processing, echo handling, noise reduction, beamforming and voice-trigger detection, depending on the product configuration and software.
The company also makes headset SoCs with audio and noise-cancellation functions. In a hearable or headphone, one chip may coordinate Bluetooth connectivity, audio decoding, microphone input, battery-conscious operation and active-noise-control processing. The exact codec, radio profile, microphone count and cancellation performance are product-specific and must be confirmed from the headset maker’s specification.
Synaptics does not sell every smart speaker or headset that uses these components. It provides building blocks that an OEM combines with microphones, speakers, batteries, enclosures, companion applications and cloud services.

What Astra processors are for
Astra platforms combine some mix of general-purpose compute, AI acceleration, multimedia handling and sensing interfaces. The target applications listed by Synaptics include:
- Smart appliances that need local perception, voice or vision functions.
- Wearables with sensor processing and power constraints.
- Robotics requiring camera input, control and local inference.
- Industrial-vision equipment that analyzes images near the source.
- Medical devices that process sensor or imaging data locally.
Running analysis on the device can reduce round trips to a cloud service and may help with latency, privacy and connectivity resilience. It also places greater responsibility on the product designer to select a model, optimize software, manage heat and provide a secure update path.
SL-series processors and SR-series microcontrollers
The SL and SR labels describe different classes within the Astra family rather than one universal specification. An engineer must compare CPU resources, AI acceleration, memory interfaces, graphics or video functions, peripheral connectivity, operating-system support, power envelope and software maturity for the exact part.

Development kits and software
Synaptics offers developer resources and kits for Astra. A kit lets an engineering team test sensors, run sample workloads, evaluate inference performance and begin software integration before designing a custom circuit board. The production path still requires a separate hardware design, certification work, supply planning and validation against the final enclosure and power system.
Multimedia and imaging processors
VideoSmart for media devices
VideoSmart processors are designed for set-top boxes and OTT streaming hardware. They can provide the host processing and media capabilities needed to receive, decode, render and output video, with the final feature set determined by the selected device and software stack.
A television, set-top box or media streamer that uses a VideoSmart component is made and branded by an OEM. Synaptics supplies the processor technology; it is not the subscription provider or the retailer of every finished streaming product.
ImagingSmart for printers
ImagingSmart technology addresses image processing for printers and related equipment, including pocket printers. Image-processing silicon can manage the conversion and movement of image data needed between a host device, print engine and memory system. Printer manufacturers add the mechanical print hardware, consumables, firmware and user interface.

This is an application map, not a list of products Synaptics assembles itself. A particular laptop, car display or camera may use a competing component or a different Synaptics family.
How manufacturers use Synaptics technology
OEM integration normally follows a layered process:
- Define the product requirement. The manufacturer specifies the number of displays, wireless standards, sensor inputs, audio channels, AI workload, operating temperature, power budget and target cost.
- Select a component or platform. Engineers compare the relevant Synaptics family and exact part against competing solutions, paying attention to package, memory, interfaces and software support.
- Build the hardware. The OEM designs the circuit board, power rails, antennas, display or sensor connections, thermal solution and enclosure around the chosen component.
- Integrate firmware and drivers. The device maker adapts reference software, operating-system drivers and user-facing features to its own product.
- Validate the complete system. Testing covers radio certification, display combinations, audio quality, AI accuracy, heat, battery life, security updates and reliability under the intended conditions.
- Manufacture and support the finished product. Synaptics remains the component supplier while the OEM handles assembly, branding, retail distribution and most end-user support.
This model explains why two products containing related Synaptics silicon can behave differently: the host processor, firmware, panel, antenna, power design and enclosure all affect the final experience.
Comparing a DisplayLink dock with an Astra development kit
These are useful examples of Synaptics technology at two very different layers. A dock is a finished accessory bought for immediate use; an Astra kit is an engineering platform used to create another product. They should not be compared by the same criteria.
| Decision factor | DisplayLink-capable dock | Astra development kit |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Expand a computer with displays and peripherals | Prototype an embedded product with compute, sensing or AI |
| Compatibility | Host operating system, USB-C or other host interface, driver requirements and display outputs | Supported processor family, operating systems, SDKs, tools and attached sensors |
| Performance questions | Display count, resolution, refresh rate, bandwidth and power delivery | AI workload, multimedia pipeline, memory, latency and sustained thermal performance |
| Interfaces to check | Video outputs, USB ports, networking, audio and charging | Camera, sensor, storage, networking, display, control and expansion interfaces |
| Power concern | Power supplied to the host and connected peripherals | Board consumption, battery or adapter design and thermal budget |
| End point | A working consumer or business accessory | A prototype that may lead to a custom production device |
| What is not established by the category alone | Exact display support or reliability for every computer | Exact AI performance, production cost or certification outcome |
For either type of product, verify the exact model documentation rather than assuming that a technology label guarantees a particular feature.
Is Synaptics a chip maker?
Yes, in the practical sense that Synaptics designs and supplies semiconductor chips, SoCs, processors, microcontrollers and interface ICs. It is best described as a semiconductor supplier and embedded-platform company, not as a maker of complete consumer electronics.
The distinction between chip design and fabrication is also useful. Synaptics’ value is in designing the silicon, system architecture, firmware and development ecosystem. Semiconductor manufacturing, assembly and testing can involve external manufacturing partners, as is common for fabless chip companies. The important point for a buyer is that Synaptics supplies the component technology that an OEM integrates into a larger product.
Synaptics’ markets and business scale
Synaptics reported $1.2 billion in full-year fiscal 2026 revenue, with 11% year-over-year revenue growth and 43% growth in its Core IoT portfolio. These are company-reported fiscal-year results, not independent market estimates. The fiscal year ended June 27, 2026; the company’s Form 10-K record identifies June 27 as the year-end date and an August 10, 2026 filing date.

How to tell whether a product uses Synaptics technology
Brand names and product categories are not enough to identify a component. Use this checklist when investigating a particular device:
- Read the manufacturer’s technical specifications, service manual or regulatory filing for component references.
- Look for an explicit mention of Synaptics, DisplayLink, an Astra part number or a Synaptics driver in the support-download area.
- Check the operating system’s device manager or hardware information, understanding that a generic driver name may conceal the underlying component.
- For a dock, confirm the exact model’s driver requirement, supported displays, output combinations and host operating systems.
- For an embedded board, match the processor, SDK version, kernel or operating-system support and peripheral list to the planned workload.
- For wireless or audio products, verify the radio profiles, codecs, microphone features and regional approvals for the exact model.
Do not infer that every product in a category contains Synaptics silicon. Manufacturers can change components between revisions, regions or production runs while keeping the same retail name.
Common mistakes when describing Synaptics
Mistaking the component supplier for the finished-product maker
Synaptics may supply a touch controller for a laptop or a multimedia processor for a set-top box, but the OEM designs, brands and sells the finished device. Attribute the component correctly.
Treating a portfolio category as a guaranteed feature
“Supports Wi-Fi,” “has AI acceleration” or “uses DisplayLink” is not a complete specification. The exact chip, firmware, driver and host hardware determine what works.
Assuming compatibility from a connector
A USB-C connector does not by itself guarantee a given display mode, charging level, operating-system support or DisplayLink capability. Check the dock and host documentation together.
Confusing an evaluation kit with a production device
An Astra kit is intended for development. Production hardware may require a custom board, thermal design, enclosure, certifications, security review and a different supply arrangement.
Reading financial growth as a product benchmark
Revenue and portfolio-growth percentages describe the company’s reported business performance. They do not establish display quality, wireless range, battery life, AI accuracy or reliability for a particular device.
The bottom line
Synaptics makes the semiconductor and embedded software building blocks behind interaction, connectivity, media and local intelligence. Its technology can sense a finger, drive a display, connect a device, process a voice stream, decode video or run an AI workload near the source. Laptop makers, automotive suppliers, accessory companies and IoT manufacturers turn those building blocks into the products people actually buy. To understand what a specific device can do, identify the exact Synaptics component and then check the OEM’s implementation, drivers and compatibility documentation.
