Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReliability and safety ratings answer different questions. Reliability ratings usually summarize defects, malfunctions and design problems reported by owners during a defined ownership period. Safety ratings summarize controlled crash, rollover and crash-avoidance assessments. Neither is a universal score for every aspect of an SUV, and a star rating, a 100-point score and a problems-per-vehicle figure cannot be ranked on one shared scale.
To use a rating intelligently, identify who produced it, what was tested or surveyed, which model year and equipment were involved, and what time period the result covers.

Reliability and safety are not interchangeable
An SUV can perform well in crash tests yet develop frequent infotainment or mechanical faults. Another can have a strong owner-dependability record but offer fewer driver-assistance features or weaker performance in a particular crash test. Treating both results as one measure of “quality” hides the evidence behind each number.

What a reliability rating measures
Owner-experienced defects across vehicle systems
In the methodology described by J.D. Power, quality and reliability reflect defects, malfunctions and design flaws that owners report. The scope can run from the engine and transmission to electronics and infotainment. The data comes from verified owner survey feedback rather than a laboratory endurance test.
That makes the result useful for estimating the problems a population of owners encountered, but it also means the score depends on who responded, what they noticed and how the study defines a problem. It is evidence about owner experience, not a mechanical guarantee for a particular vehicle.
The ownership window changes the meaning
J.D. Power describes collecting feedback about the first three months of ownership and subsequently the first three years. A rating tied to the early ownership window captures initial quality issues, while a result covering the longer period reflects problems that emerge as vehicles accumulate use. Always read the study name and period shown with the score; “reliability” without a time frame is incomplete.

Overall scores may include more than reliability
The same methodology says its overall rating also incorporates driving experience, resale value and dealership experience. Therefore, an overall score should not be presented as a pure count of mechanical or electrical failures. Look for the quality-and-reliability portion when the question is specifically “How often does this SUV go wrong?” and keep the other dimensions separate.

New designs can be statistically strong and still unproven
J.D. Power notes that newer and recently redesigned vehicles can receive better driving-experience ratings, while also cautioning that all-new or substantially redesigned models may not have an established history. Some first-year ratings may be unavailable or may rely on information from the prior year. A strong number for a carryover model and a strong number for a brand-new platform do not represent the same level of evidence.
What NHTSA safety ratings measure
Crash protection, rollover resistance and crash avoidance
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) conducts frontal-crash, side-crash and rollover-resistance assessments. It also evaluates crash-avoidance performance and publishes procedures and reports through its NCAP resources and datasets and APIs.
Crashworthiness testing asks how well the vehicle protects occupants when a collision occurs. Crash-avoidance evaluation asks whether safety technology can help prevent a crash. The protection and rollover results contribute to the familiar star ratings; avoidance assessments also produce safety-technology recommendations. Those are related but distinct findings, so do not treat an avoidance recommendation as another crash-test star.
How the Overall Vehicle Score is constructed
NHTSA’s Overall Vehicle Score combines estimated injury risk from frontal and side crashes with a projected injury risk associated with rollover resistance. The agency weights the components to reflect the share of real-world injuries associated with each crash type, then compares the result with average fleet injury risk.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
A star is therefore a relative risk summary of specified tests and modeling. More stars indicate lower modeled injury risk relative to the comparison baseline, not a promise that a vehicle will prevent injury in every crash, at every speed or in every seating position.
Why vehicle class and weight matter
NHTSA cautions that Overall Vehicle Scores should be compared among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another because the calculation includes a frontal-crash test rating. When comparing two SUVs, confirm their class, curb-weight relationship, model year and tested configuration before concluding that one star result is directly superior.
What IIHS ratings measure
Crashworthiness versus crash avoidance and mitigation
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) divides its work into crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants in a crash—and crash avoidance and mitigation, which covers technology intended to prevent a crash or reduce its severity. Its tests and rating categories are explained on the About our tests page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ratings may carry over to another model year
IIHS says time and budget make it impossible to test every model every year. When a vehicle has no relevant changes, a previous model’s rating may carry over. That does not mean every trim, package or later production change has been independently tested. Use the specific vehicle-rating page and read the notes for the model year and equipment shown.

How to compare SUV ratings without misleading yourself
- Name the program. Record whether the number comes from J.D. Power, NHTSA, IIHS or another organization. Do not place unlike scales in one ranking.
- Capture the time frame. For reliability, write down whether the study covers the first three months, the first three years or another stated period. For safety, record the test year and publication date.
- Match the exact vehicle. Check model year, body style, drivetrain, seating configuration, optional equipment and trim. A rating for one configuration may not describe another.
- Separate the questions in your notes. Keep owner-reported problems in a reliability column and crashworthiness, rollover and avoidance results in separate safety columns.
- Apply NHTSA’s comparison rule. For Overall Vehicle Scores, compare SUVs in the same class and within 250 pounds, as NHTSA advises.
- Check for redesigns and carryover. A new platform may lack a long owner history; an unchanged vehicle may show a carried-over IIHS result. Read the model-year notes instead of assuming a fresh test.
- Read the underlying categories. A composite reliability result that includes driving experience, resale and dealership experience should not be used as a failure-rate proxy. A safety star should not replace the individual frontal, side, rollover and avoidance details.
Common ways ratings are misread
“Five stars means no serious risk”
NHTSA’s stars express relative modeled injury risk, not immunity from injury. Vehicle occupants, crash direction, speed, restraint use, road conditions and the struck object can all differ from the test scenario. Use the stars to compare tested performance, then read the component results and available technology assessments.
“The highest reliability score will last forever”
Owner surveys describe the problems reported during the study’s defined window. They do not forecast every repair after that window, nor do they account for how a particular owner drives, services or modifies an SUV. A score is one input alongside maintenance records, warranty coverage and the vehicle’s design age.
“A score from one publisher beats a different score because the number is larger”
Organizations can use different samples, questions, weighting and scales. A 90-point result, a four-star result and a problems-per-vehicle measure have no common mathematical meaning unless the publisher explicitly provides a conversion—which these methodologies do not.
“A model-year page automatically covers every trim”
Safety equipment, structural changes and optional packages can alter what was tested or what technology is fitted. Confirm the exact configuration listed by NHTSA or IIHS and verify that the SUV you are considering has the same equipment.

A practical decision framework for buyers
If reliability is your priority
- Prefer a rating with a clearly stated ownership period and a large enough, verified owner base to explain how the result was obtained.
- Use the quality-and-reliability category rather than an overall score that also includes driving experience, resale and dealer experience.
- Treat an all-new or substantially redesigned SUV as less proven when the methodology warns that first-year information may be unavailable or drawn from an earlier model.
- Ask whether the reported problems concern systems that matter to you, such as propulsion, climate control, driver displays or infotainment, rather than relying only on a single composite number.
If crash protection is your priority
- Check both NHTSA and IIHS results when available, because their programs and labels are not identical.
- Read the individual frontal, side and rollover findings instead of stopping at the overall NHTSA stars.
- Review IIHS crashworthiness and crash-avoidance or mitigation categories for the exact model year and equipment.
- Confirm that the SUV’s tested weight and class make an NHTSA comparison valid.
If you want a balanced choice
Build a two-part record: one section for owner-reported dependability over its stated period and another for independently tested crash and avoidance performance. A vehicle that is strong in one section and average in the other is not a contradiction; it is a trade-off the separate evidence makes visible.
What the ratings cannot tell you
These programs do not establish the total cost of ownership, the quality of a specific dealer’s service, how a used example was maintained, or how a driver will behave in an emergency. Reliability surveys also cannot prove that an individual SUV has never been neglected, modified or damaged. Safety tests cannot reproduce every crash geometry or predict the outcome for every occupant.
Those limits do not make ratings useless. They define the decision the rating can support: owner-reported problem experience for a stated period, or performance under a stated set of safety assessments. Use each result only for that question.
Where to verify a rating
For reliability methodology and definitions, consult J.D. Power’s Ratings Methodology. For NHTSA test procedures, reports and data, use its NCAP resources and datasets and APIs; the agency’s vehicle-specific results are available through its Car Safety Ratings pages. For IIHS definitions and model-year results, use About our tests and the Vehicle ratings database.
