SpaceX’s uncrewed Cargo Dragon delivers a changing mix of crew provisions, station-operating equipment, laboratory hardware, and scientific investigations to the International Space Station (ISS). NASA’s mission descriptions show that there is no single standard grocery list or permanent payload: each Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) flight is assembled around the crew’s needs, station maintenance, and the investigations scheduled for that mission.
The clearest recent example is CRS-34, which arrived in May 2026 with food for Expedition 74, supplies and equipment for station operations, and a large set of biology, physical-science, and Earth-observation payloads. Earlier CRS-32 and CRS-33 flights carried different research materials and hardware, illustrating why a Dragon manifest must be read mission by mission.

What Cargo Dragon delivers in practical terms
NASA groups Dragon’s outbound cargo into three broad functions. The first keeps astronauts fed and supplied. The second maintains or expands the station’s working infrastructure and laboratories. The third uses the space station as a research facility by delivering experiments, samples, instruments, and consumables that cannot be used in the same way on Earth.

Food and crew provisions
Dragon carries food and other supplies for the resident crew. NASA’s CRS-34 docking account specifically says the spacecraft brought food, supplies, and equipment for Expedition 74. Public mission releases do not provide a complete recurring menu or a universal list of toiletries, clothing, medical items, and other consumables. Those details can change with crew size, mission duration, existing stock and the requirements of a particular expedition.

Station and laboratory equipment
Some cargo is hardware that supports daily station operations or enables experiments. It can include laboratory equipment, replacement or supplemental systems, and instruments that monitor the station’s environment. CRS-32, for example, included an air-quality monitoring system and atomic clocks. These are operational or laboratory assets rather than ordinary crew provisions.
Scientific investigations and instruments
Research payloads are a substantial part of Dragon’s role. They cover biology and biotechnology, physical science, robotics, manufacturing, astronomy and observations of Earth or the near-Earth environment. The investigations are selected for a specific flight, so an experiment mentioned in one NASA release should not be treated as a standard item on every Dragon mission.
CRS-34: the May 2026 cargo snapshot
NASA’s May 15, 2026 launch release said Dragon delivered about 6,500 pounds of science investigations, supplies and equipment to the ISS. A NASA docking account dated May 17 described nearly 6,500 pounds of food, supplies and equipment for Expedition 74. The two descriptions refer to the same mission but use different wording and categories; neither should be converted into a universal Dragon capacity figure.

- Microgravity comparison work: a project compares Earth-based simulators with conditions in microgravity, helping researchers determine which ground methods reproduce the space environment accurately.
- Bone research: a wooden bone scaffold is being used in an investigation related to bone formation or repair.
- Blood and spleen studies: equipment examines red blood cells and the spleen, supporting research into how spaceflight affects blood-related biology.
- Charged-particle measurements: an instrument records charged particles in the space environment.
- Planetary formation: one investigation examines processes relevant to how planets form.
- Reflected sunlight observations: an instrument measures sunlight reflected by Earth and the Moon, producing data for studies of the near-Earth environment and planetary bodies.
These examples are the named payloads in NASA’s CRS-34 descriptions, not a permanent Dragon kit. A later flight may replace them with unrelated investigations while still carrying food, station supplies and equipment.
How CRS-33 differed from CRS-34
NASA’s CRS-33 mission, reported in August 2025, carried more than 5,000 pounds of supplies. Its research emphasis included biological materials and in-space manufacturing:
- Bone-forming stem cells for studying skeletal biology.
- Materials for three-dimensional printing.
- Bioprinted liver tissue for biotechnology research.
- Supplies for printing or processing metal in orbit.
The CRS-33 examples show why “supplies” can mean more than food or spare parts. A material consumed during a manufacturing run, a living-cell sample and a piece of laboratory feedstock are all cargo, but each serves a different scientific objective. NASA’s public description does not establish that these materials appeared on CRS-34 or that they will recur on later flights.
What CRS-32 brought in April 2025
NASA reported approximately 6,700 pounds of cargo for CRS-32 in April 2025. The mission’s highlighted payloads included free-flying robots, an air-quality monitoring system and atomic clocks.

Free-flying robots
Robotic systems that operate independently inside the station can be evaluated for tasks such as inspection, navigation or assistance to astronauts. Their presence on CRS-32 does not mean every Dragon carries robots; it reflects that mission’s research and technology schedule.
Air-quality monitoring
An air-quality system helps investigators and station operators assess the cabin environment. It belongs to the station-support and laboratory-equipment side of the manifest rather than the crew-food category.
Atomic clocks
Atomic clocks provide extremely precise timekeeping for technology demonstrations and experiments. Including them on CRS-32 illustrates that Dragon can deliver precision instruments as well as biological samples and consumable materials.

The figures are not directly interchangeable measurements. NASA uses “about,” “nearly,” “more than” and “approximately,” and each release describes the cargo with a slightly different scope. They are mission-specific reports, not an advertised standard payload or an average load.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the manifest changes from one Dragon flight to the next
The ISS functions as both a home and a laboratory. A resupply flight therefore has to balance immediate crew needs with hardware replacement and research scheduling. If an investigation requires living cells, specialized scaffolds, printing feedstock or a dedicated sensor, those items are added for the flight that supports that experiment. Once the work is complete, the same item may never appear on another manifest.
Research also spans very different disciplines. CRS-33 concentrated examples in tissue biology and manufacturing, while CRS-32 highlighted robotics, air monitoring and timing technology. CRS-34 combined crew food with bone, blood, charged-particle, planetary-formation and reflected-light investigations. Comparing flights by the word “supplies” alone hides these differences; the mission’s named payloads explain what the cargo is intended to do.
What the published pound figures do—and do not—tell you
A reported cargo mass is a description of one flight, under one manifest and one NASA reporting convention. It should not be read as the maximum Dragon can carry, the amount of food delivered per astronaut, or the mass available for science on every mission. The CRS-34 launch release counted “science investigations, supplies, and equipment,” while its docking account emphasized “food, supplies, and equipment for Expedition 74.” CRS-33 and CRS-32 used their own summaries and qualifiers.
Best Value
For an accurate comparison, retain four details with every number:
- The CRS mission and launch or docking date.
- The exact qualifier NASA used: about, nearly, more than or approximately.
- The categories included in the description.
- The fact that the figure describes that mission rather than a permanent cargo specification.
Outbound cargo versus cargo returning to Earth
Dragon’s logistics role is not limited to delivery. NASA’s CRS-33 account also describes the spacecraft returning to Earth with research and cargo. Returned material can include completed experiment samples, manufactured items, data-bearing hardware or other equipment that investigators need to examine on the ground.
That return cargo should be kept conceptually separate from the outbound supplies discussed in this article. Food and new experiment hardware travel to the station; samples and used or completed research materials may come back. A NASA statement that Dragon returns “research and cargo” does not mean that the outbound manifest consisted only of research, nor that every item delivered is later returned.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to read a NASA Dragon manifest
When NASA announces another CRS flight, identify the mission number first, then separate the description into crew provisions, station or laboratory equipment, and named investigations. A release may mention only highlights, so the absence of an item from a short news story does not prove that the item was not aboard.
- Find the mission identifier. Record whether the release concerns CRS-32, CRS-33, CRS-34 or another flight.
- Check the date and event. Launch and docking accounts can describe the same cargo with different emphasis.
- Copy the mass qualifier. Preserve “about,” “nearly,” “more than” or “approximately.”
- Sort each named item by function. Food and crew provisions, station or laboratory equipment, and scientific investigations answer different reader questions.
- Separate examples from recurring cargo. A named experiment is evidence for that mission, not proof of a standard Dragon manifest.
- Look for return information. If NASA discusses cargo coming back, treat those samples or hardware as a separate logistics phase.
Can anyone get a complete item-by-item list?
Not from the short NASA mission summaries alone. The public accounts used for CRS-32, CRS-33 and CRS-34 provide categories, total-mass descriptions and selected payload examples, but they do not publish a complete recurring inventory of every meal, spare part, consumable, packing unit and experiment on all flights. A complete manifest would have to be tied to a specific mission and source, because the contents change.
For the question “What supplies does SpaceX Cargo Dragon deliver to the ISS?”, the reliable answer is therefore functional rather than a fixed shopping list: Dragon delivers food and crew supplies, station and laboratory equipment, and mission-specific science payloads. The exact contents and mass belong to the individual CRS flight NASA is describing.
