What Sundar Pichai Said About Google Layoffs in 2024—and What Later Reports Show

Sundar Pichai’s January 2024 warning was that Google would remove some workforce layers to make room for investment in company priorities. He did not name affected roles or give a planned layoff total, and said the reductions would be less extensive than in 2023 and would “not touch every team.” The memo connected the cuts to investment priorities amid Google’s AI push; it did not establish that AI caused each job elimination.

What Pichai’s January 2024 memo actually said

On January 18, 2024, CBS News reported that Pichai told Google employees the company would “remove layers [of its workforce]” that year to free resources for “investing in… [the company’s] big priorities.” A Google representative confirmed the memo to CBS MoneyWatch. Pichai described the choice as difficult: “The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices.” CBS News reported the memo and its limits.

He did not provide a list of roles or a number of employees for the 2024 plan. He said the cuts would be less extensive than the prior year’s and would “not touch every team.” This was a warning about workforce layers and reallocating capacity, not a confirmed count or a blanket announcement that every team would shrink.

How the 2024 warning differs from Google’s 2023 cuts

The more than 12,000 roles eliminated in 2023 are a historical baseline, not the size of the 2024 plan. CBS News reported those 2023 reductions across areas including hardware, shopping, core engineering, policy and ad sales. The memo did not say Google would eliminate another 12,000 roles, nor did it quantify its planned reductions.

Did Google say it was firing people because of AI?

Not in the January 2024 memo as reported. Pichai said Google needed capacity for investment in company priorities, in the context of its AI push. That supports describing investment as part of the stated rationale; it does not establish that AI was the direct cause of any specific role elimination.

Later reporting also does not settle the cause of each cut. The Guardian reported on July 16, 2026, that Google had not commented on whether AI played a role in its layoffs. A company’s AI investment, a worker’s concern about its effects, and the reason a particular job is eliminated are distinct claims.

What later 2026 developments add—and what they do not

Workers called for layoff protections

On July 16, 2026, members of the Alphabet Workers Union delivered a petition with more than 4,500 signatures calling for layoff protections, guaranteed severance, buyouts before mandatory layoffs and other safeguards. The Guardian reported that Google did not immediately respond to the article’s request for comment on the petition. Union president and Google software engineer Parul Koul characterized the cuts as “not difficult decisions, but simply profit being put over the people that make this company run.” That is Koul’s assessment, not an independently established finding about the cause of every reduction. The Guardian’s report describes the petition and its demands.

Pichai discussed AI business activity, not layoffs

In remarks for Google’s Q2 2026 earnings on July 22, Pichai described AI investment across Search, Cloud and products, alongside company-reported business indicators. Those remarks provide context for the scale of Google’s AI focus; they were not a layoff announcement and do not explain the cause of a specific staffing decision. Google’s Q2 2026 CEO remarks.

Hassabis offered a different view of productivity

In a May 19, 2026 WIRED interview, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis argued that if engineers become more productive, his preference is to use that productivity to do more work: “if engineers are becoming three or four times more productive, then we just [want to] do three or four times more stuff.” This is Hassabis’s opinion, not a workforce guarantee or a policy for all of Alphabet. How many people is Google laying off?

The January 2024 memo gave no planned total, so there is no memo-based count for those reductions. Nor do the cited later reports establish a single company-confirmed total for Google job cuts across 2024–2026. TechCrunch’s July 25, 2026 roundup describes reductions happening through different processes; any estimates in that secondary report should not be treated as a company-confirmed tally. How to read the headline

  • Date: The specific warning about removing workforce layers was made in January 2024, not in Pichai’s July 2026 earnings remarks.
  • Count: More than 12,000 refers to roles eliminated in 2023; Pichai did not announce a 2024 total.
  • Cause: The memo tied reductions to capacity for investment priorities amid an AI push, but it did not identify AI as the cause of each job loss.
  • Later context: The 2026 petition documents worker demands and the earnings remarks describe AI activity; neither supplies a definitive count or causal breakdown of cuts.
