It is a summary of user sentiment, not an expert rating and not a promise that the game will suit you. For a new release, read the percentage and review count behind the badge, identify whether the figure is lifetime, recent, or language-specific, and then examine written reviews that address your priorities.
What the “Very Positive” badge actually tells you
Steam’s review label compresses a percentage of positive recommendations into a short category. When a store page says “Very Positive,” the useful conclusion is that favorable reviews substantially outnumber unfavorable ones among the reviews Steam is using for that particular score.

The label does not say that the game is technically polished, that every player will enjoy its genre, or that it is a safe purchase at any price. It also does not identify which aspects reviewers liked. A role-playing game can receive a strong recommendation rate while still frustrating players who dislike long tutorials; an online game can be well received while having a small population in your region; and a new release can have a positive early response before later patches change the experience.

How Steam calculates and displays the score
Paid-game reviews are tied to Steam purchases
For paid games, Steam Support says that only reviews from players who purchased the game on Steam count toward the review score. That qualification matters when you compare a score with comments posted elsewhere, such as reviews from press outlets, another storefront, or people who received a separate access key. Those opinions may be useful context, but they are not necessarily part of the Steam percentage shown on the store page.
Steam can exclude reviews it classifies as off-topic
By default, reviews written during periods that Steam classifies as off-topic are excluded from the score. The resulting percentage is therefore not always a simple count of every review visible on the page. A review can remain available for readers while not contributing to the displayed recommendation rate.
The score may be language-specific
When enough reviews exist in a particular language, Steam can calculate a score for that language. If there are not enough reviews, Steam uses reviews written in all languages instead. The language shown on your store page can therefore affect both the percentage and the comments you encounter.

Translation quality, cultural references, customer support, and network conditions can all shape those experiences. Do not assume that an all-language score or another country’s language score describes your own likely experience.
Recent and lifetime scores answer different questions
Steam can show a recent score alongside lifetime review context. The recent score uses positive reviews from the previous 30 days when enough recent reviews exist and the game has been available on Steam for at least 45 days. Steam’s official explanation describes this as a way to show what a game is like in its current state.

A lifetime score represents the accumulated response over the game’s Steam history. A recent score is a narrower, moving snapshot. If a developer has released major patches, changed monetization, added content, or allowed a serious bug to persist, the two figures can diverge. Neither is automatically the “correct” one: lifetime sentiment shows the long-run record, while recent sentiment can reveal a current change.
Is there an official percentage cutoff for “Very Positive”?
Valve’s public support, Steamworks, and review-explainer material describe how review scores are calculated, but the official pages reviewed do not publish a complete table of percentage and review-count cutoffs for every label. You should therefore avoid presenting a precise threshold as an official Valve rule.
Recommended Free Tools
A secondary analysis by Steam Review Rescue, reported from its review of Steam’s public review API in July 2026, found “Very Positive” appearing at 80% or more with at least 50 reviews. That is an empirical observation of the public data at that time, not a threshold table published by Valve. Steam can change its categorization rules, and the result may not apply identically to every language or score view.
| Figure or condition | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| “Very Positive” label | A category indicating that positive recommendations dominate the included reviews. | A guarantee of quality, value, compatibility, or personal enjoyment. |
| 80% and 50 reviews | An empirical boundary reported by Steam Review Rescue from a July 2026 public-API analysis. | An official Valve rule or a permanent threshold. |
| Percentage shown on the page | The proportion of positive reviews in the score’s defined population. | A measure that necessarily includes every visible review. |
| Review count | How many reviews contribute to the displayed result, as presented by Steam. | A population statistic predicting whether an individual buyer will be satisfied. |
For a new game, the practical lesson is to treat the label as a starting point. Use the percentage and count to understand the scale of the signal, but do not reverse-engineer a purchase decision from a single category name.
How to read a new game’s score before buying
- Open the game’s Steam store page. Locate the user-review area and record the displayed label, percentage, and number of reviews. Store-page figures are live snapshots and can change as players post new reviews.
- Identify the score’s scope. Note whether Steam is showing an overall lifetime result, a recent result, or a language-specific result. Do not compare two percentages until you know that they describe comparable review populations.
- Check the review count beside the percentage. A category hides detail. The count tells you how many recommendations contribute to the figure, while the percentage shows their balance. For illustration, 48 positive reviews out of 50 and 4,800 out of 5,000 both equal 96%, but they represent very different amounts of accumulated player experience.
- Look for a recent-score panel. If the game has been on Steam for at least 45 days and has enough recent reviews, Steam may show the previous 30 days separately. A recent result that is materially lower than the lifetime result deserves investigation; so does a recent improvement after a troubled launch.
- Confirm the language context. Check which language Steam is using for the score. If the page falls back to all languages, read comments in the language you understand and look for issues that cross regional boundaries, such as crashes or missing features.
- Filter the written reviews for your decision. Read comments that mention the genre systems you care about, controller or keyboard play, performance on your hardware, accessibility, single-player content, multiplayer activity, mod support, or the length of the campaign. The badge cannot supply these details.
- Read both recommendations and criticisms. A positive review can still identify a serious limitation, and a negative review can explain a problem that does not affect your use case. Look for repeated, specific observations rather than one unusually enthusiastic or angry post.
Why a new game can have different scores on the same day
Launch momentum and early access to the game
A new release often accumulates reviews rapidly. A small change in the mix of recommendations can move the percentage noticeably when the count is still low. Early purchasers may also be a self-selected group of committed fans, while later buyers arrive after broader coverage or a price change. The score describes the reviews included at that moment; it does not freeze the launch response.

Patches and changes in the current build
Lifetime sentiment includes experiences from older versions. A recent score can provide a better indication of the current build once Steam has enough qualifying reviews, but it still covers only the recent 30-day window. Read the dates and text of reviews to connect a complaint to the version in which it occurred.
Language and regional experience
Different language communities can emphasize different issues. Players may evaluate localization, cultural references, server distance, payment options, or customer support differently. A language-specific score is not an error or a universal ranking; it is a view of the reviews Steam has enough evidence to treat as a separate language population.
Reviews that are visible but outside the score
Because Steam can exclude reviews it classifies as off-topic by default, the number of comments a reader can scroll through is not necessarily the exact population behind the percentage. Use the count Steam associates with the score rather than trying to count every visible card manually.
How to compare two games fairly
The “Very Positive” label is only like-for-like when the underlying measurements are comparable. Use the same checklist for both pages:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Score type | Are both figures lifetime, or are both recent? | A recent score covers a different time period from an accumulated lifetime score. |
| Language | Are both pages using the same language or the all-language fallback? | Language-specific populations can produce different percentages. |
| Review count | How many reviews contribute to each figure? | The percentage alone does not reveal the size of the evidence base. |
| Current state | Do the newest comments refer to the present version? | Older reviews can describe mechanics, bugs, or policies that have changed. |
| Personal requirements | Do reviewers discuss the features and problems that matter to you? | A strong aggregate can coexist with a deal-breaking issue for a particular player. |
For example, a game with a 92% lifetime score from a long history should not automatically beat a game with an 88% recent score if you are choosing based on the current build. Conversely, the newer game’s high recent percentage may rest on a much smaller review count. Record the scope, language, count, and recurring themes before drawing a conclusion.

What “Very Positive” cannot tell you
- Genre fit: The label does not reveal whether the pacing, difficulty, camera, progression, or story suits your taste.
- Hardware performance: It does not guarantee stable frame rates, acceptable loading times, or compatibility with your graphics card, processor, operating system, or display.
- Accessibility: The aggregate does not specify subtitle controls, remapping, color options, text size, assist modes, or other accommodations.
- Multiplayer health: A positive score does not tell you whether matchmaking is active in your region or at the times you play.
- Value for your budget: Recommendation sentiment is not a price-to-content calculation and does not account for a sale price, downloadable content, or your available play time.
- Future support: A strong current score cannot promise that a developer will continue patching or expanding the game.
These are reasons to read the text, not reasons to disregard the label. The category is useful for quickly identifying the overall direction of player recommendations; written evidence supplies the context it omits.
Common mistakes when interpreting the badge
Assuming the category is an expert review
“Very Positive” is generated from user recommendations. It is not a critic score, a technical certification, or a statement from Valve that the game meets a particular quality bar.
Treating an exact threshold as permanent
The 80%-and-50-review figure reported by Steam Review Rescue is tied to its July 2026 API analysis. Since Valve’s official material reviewed here does not publish the full tier table, quote that figure with its source and date rather than presenting it as universal policy.
Ignoring the denominator
Two pages can show the same percentage while representing very different numbers of reviews. Always read the count next to the percentage and pay attention to whether Steam is reporting a language-specific population.

Mixing recent and lifetime results
A lifetime “Very Positive” label and a recent “Mostly Positive” result are not contradictory measurements of the same window. They describe different periods. Investigate the dates and the reasons in the written reviews.

Assuming another language’s score applies to you
When Steam has enough reviews in a language, it may show a separate score. Translation, regional infrastructure, and cultural context can change how players experience the same release, so read the score and comments relevant to your language and region.
Reading the badge without reading the criticism
Positive recommendations can still contain warnings about crashes, missing features, repetitive content, or an unpopular design decision. Those details are often more useful for a personal purchase decision than the category itself.
A practical decision rule
Use “Very Positive” as permission to investigate, not as a substitute for investigation. A sensible purchase check is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The displayed percentage and review count are clear.
- You know whether the score is lifetime, recent, or language-specific.
- The written reviews do not reveal a repeated problem that conflicts with your priorities.
- Recent comments describe a version you can actually play now.
If those checks pass, the badge is a strong shorthand for favorable player sentiment. If they do not, the label alone cannot resolve the uncertainty.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Steam’s published explanations establish the mechanics of the score, including purchase eligibility for paid games, off-topic exclusions, language-specific views, and the recent-score conditions. They do not provide a named population statistic showing how often the “Very Positive” badge predicts an individual player’s satisfaction. No such predictive percentage should be inferred from the category.
Review counts, percentages, and labels on live store pages are also date-sensitive snapshots. A game’s displayed result can change as new reviews arrive or as Steam’s presentation evolves. Treat the page you see as the current reading for that score scope and language, not as a permanent property of the title.
