Steam displays separate scores for the past 30 days and for the product’s lifetime. Use those figures to spot a signal, then read dated reviews to learn what players liked or disliked and whether their reasons matter to you.
What the Steam review percentage measures
Steam calculates a review score from the aggregate of positive and negative reviews. In practical terms, the percentage indicates the share of counted reviews that recommend the product. It is a summary of customer recommendations, not a critic score, star rating, or direct test of technical quality. Steam’s documentation describes the score as an overview of how customers have reviewed a product over the past 30 days and over its lifetime: Steamworks: User Reviews.

A review can reflect much more than performance or bugs. Players may be responding to the game itself, its value, business practices, or the community experience. The percentage does not tell you which of those considerations drove the recommendations, so the written reviews are essential context.
Steam’s reviewed documentation does not specify a minimum review count that makes a percentage reliable, or publish a confidence interval for the displayed score. Avoid treating any particular sample-size cutoff as an official Steam rule.

Recent and lifetime scores answer different questions
The recent score covers counted reviews from the past 30 days; the lifetime score reflects the product’s longer review history. Compare recent with recent and lifetime with lifetime. If the figures differ, treat that as a reason to investigate—not proof that a patch, launch, controversy, or other event caused the change.
Check the dates on reviews and look for relevant product updates before drawing conclusions about a shift in sentiment. A current burst of feedback may describe a new state of the game, while the lifetime figure also includes older experiences.

The reviews displayed most prominently on a store page are another selection: Steam says they are chosen from recently written, helpful reviews. That selection may help surface current, useful accounts, but it is not the same thing as the complete set behind the score.
Why visible reviews and the score may not match
A review can be readable on Steam without counting toward the displayed score. Steam allows reviews from people who accessed a product through routes such as a key, a Free Weekend, a free game, or Family Library Sharing, but says only purchases made on Steam by the reviewing account count toward the score. This distinction helps explain why the visible review list and the score’s underlying set may not align.

When comparing reviews, also note the review’s date, language, playtime, and whether it was written during Early Access. Steam’s review data includes context such as purchase status, free-copy disclosure, refund status, and developer responses. These details can help you decide how closely a particular account’s experience matches your own.
How to judge the written reviews
- Start with your priorities. If you care most about performance, accessibility, multiplayer, controls, content, monetization, or support, look for specific comments on those points rather than relying on the overall percentage.
- Check timing and playtime. A review written shortly after launch or after a major change may describe a different version or experience from an older review. Playtime gives useful context, though it does not by itself prove that a review is accurate or representative.
- Look for recurring, concrete details. Several independent reviews describing the same issue can be more informative than a single broad verdict. Do not assume a complaint is widespread unless the reviews you examine support that conclusion.
- Assess relevance. A helpful or prominently displayed review may be informative, but it is not necessarily representative of all buyers. Consider whether the reviewer’s circumstances and priorities resemble yours.
What review bombing does—and does not—mean
Steam describes a review bomb as a large group of players using reviews to express unhappiness, lower a score, and provoke a response. Its documentation distinguishes activity related to the product or service from an abnormal period of activity unrelated to it. Steam says the unrelated activity is removed from the overall score; that does not mean every organized wave of negative reviews is excluded. A response to a product issue is not off-topic merely because it is sudden or coordinated.

For review data retrieved through Steam’s API, filtering also matters. Off-topic activity is filtered by default, and the Helpful filter can widen its day range until it finds results. A filtered selection therefore depends on the query and should not automatically be treated as an exhaustive record.

How to compare two games fairly
- Match time windows: compare recent scores with recent scores, and lifetime scores with lifetime scores.
- Remember eligibility: the reviews you can read may include reviews that do not count toward the score.
- Compare review context: consider dates, playtime, language, and Early Access status where relevant.
- Compare reasons, not just percentages: the score summarizes recommendations but does not explain them.
- Account for selection and filtering: a prominent store-page selection or API result may prioritize helpful reviews or filter off-topic activity.
