Valve’s Verified labels indicate how a game is expected to work on a particular Steam device, not whether it is a good game or guaranteed to work everywhere. Steam Deck has four statuses—Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown—and Valve expanded its Verified program to Steam Machine and Steam Frame in an announcement dated June 4, 2026. On Steam Frame, “Standalone Verified” specifically concerns games running on the headset rather than streaming from a PC.
What the four Steam Deck ratings mean
Valve presents the Deck categories as a quick guide to how games will play on the device. The labels describe current compatibility and expected setup effort; they are not permanent guarantees.

Verified
Valve defines Verified as: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” To earn this label, a game must meet Valve’s criteria for input, display, seamlessness and system support. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page lists those requirements.
Playable
A Playable game may work, but require a manual adjustment. Valve’s examples include selecting a community controller layout or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher.

Unsupported
This status means Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Steam Deck. It describes the game’s present compatibility status, not what every future version or other Steam device will do.
Unknown
Unknown means Valve has not checked the game’s compatibility yet. It does not mean the game is known to fail.

What Valve checks for Steam Deck Verified
Valve’s Deck criteria focus on whether the game is usable with the device’s controls and screen, and whether it runs cleanly with the system software.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Input: Full controller support, appropriate controller icons, and an on-screen keyboard that appears automatically when needed.
- Display: Support for the Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, suitable default settings, and legible text.
- Seamlessness: No compatibility warnings, and any launcher must be navigable with a controller.
- System support: If the game uses Proton, the game and its middleware must work with it. Valve specifically includes anti-cheat support in this check.
Do Deck ratings apply to LCD and OLED models?
Yes. Valve says its tested Steam Deck ratings apply to both LCD and OLED models. Compatibility details are available in the Steam store and library. Valve also says its Deck review process is ongoing as games, updates and the Deck itself change, so check a game’s current details instead of treating an old label as a lasting guarantee. Valve’s Deck Verified page explains the categories and review process.

How ratings differ across Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame
Valve’s June 4, 2026 announcement expanded the Verified program to Steam Machine and Steam Frame. The important distinction is the device and play mode named by the rating: a label describes the expected experience in that context. Valve’s aim is to help customers understand how smoothly a title works out of the box, without extra configuration. Read Valve’s Steamworks announcement.
| Device or rating context | What the label addresses |
|---|---|
| Steam Deck | How the game works on the handheld, including controls, display fit, launcher use and system compatibility. |
| Steam Machine | Compatibility in the SteamOS PC’s living-room context. Valve says the software stack uses SteamOS, the Steam interface and Proton. |
| Steam Frame Standalone Verified | How a game runs directly on the headset, without streaming from another device. Valve’s criteria include good performance at default graphics settings, legible text and interface elements on the built-in display, and a working default Steam Frame controller setup. They apply to VR and non-VR games. |
What “Standalone Verified” means on Steam Frame
Steam Frame can stream games from a PC and can also run some games on the headset itself. Standalone Verified is about the second case: running the game on Frame rather than receiving it from a PC. A game’s suitability for streaming and its standalone compatibility are different questions, so look for the mode named in the rating. Valve’s Steam Frame page describes the headset’s standalone and streaming use.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
How to use a Verified label when choosing a game
- Match the device: Check that the rating names the Steam hardware you plan to use. A Deck label is not a universal rating for every device.
- Check the play mode: For Frame, distinguish standalone play from streaming a PC game.
- Consider setup effort: Verified is intended to signal an out-of-box experience; Playable can involve manual changes.
- Look beyond the badge if needed: Valve’s criteria cover controller use, legibility, default settings, launcher navigation and system compatibility. Those details matter if you rely on a particular control method or feature.
- Recheck current compatibility: Ratings and games can change, and Valve says Deck reviews are ongoing.
What a Verified rating does not tell you
A Verified label is a device-compatibility signal, not a review of gameplay quality or a promise that every player’s experience will be identical. Steam Machine is a SteamOS PC intended in part for living-room play; Valve said in its June 4, 2026 announcement that its hardware is roughly six times as powerful as a Steam Deck. That is Valve’s relative hardware description, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of game-by-game performance.
Likewise, the label is not a current catalog-size measure. Valve’s pages use broad or undated title-count language, so those figures should not be read as a current count of games with a particular rating.
