What Stablecoin Adoption Means for Corporate Accounting and Financial Reporting

Stablecoin adoption does not automatically make a company’s token balance cash, a cash equivalent, or a conventional investment. The accounting depends on the company’s reporting framework, the token’s enforceable rights and terms, how the company uses it, and the details of the arrangement. A company must analyze those factors before deciding how to measure, present, and disclose stablecoins; issuer reserve rules do not decide the holder’s accounting.

Why the accounting depends on the arrangement

A stablecoin is designed to maintain a relatively stable value, often by reference to a fiat currency. That design goal is not, by itself, an accounting conclusion. A token’s name, target price, or claimed reserve backing does not establish that its holder can demand a particular amount of cash, access reserves, or use it in the same way as a bank deposit.

For accounting purposes, begin with the rights the company actually holds. Identify who is obligated to redeem the token, what the holder can receive, how and when redemption can occur, and what restrictions or conditions apply. Then consider the arrangement as a whole: a company holding tokens for treasury liquidity may face a different analysis from one using tokens to settle a supplier payment, selling them in the ordinary course of business, or holding them for a customer.

Those facts can affect several parts of the financial statements, not just the balance-sheet label. The analysis may determine the applicable measurement model, whether changes in value affect earnings, how a transaction is recorded when tokens are received or transferred, the statement-of-cash-flows presentation, and what disclosures are needed. U.S. GAAP and IFRS also have different rules and boundaries, so a conclusion under one framework should not be carried over to the other without analysis.

How U.S. GAAP may treat a corporate stablecoin holding

First determine whether ASU 2023-08 applies

FASB’s ASU 2023-08 establishes fair-value measurement and disclosure requirements for a defined subset of crypto assets. For assets within its scope, fair value is measured each reporting period, and changes in fair value are recognized in net income. The standard also adds disclosures. It is not a blanket stablecoin rule: a company needs to determine whether the particular asset meets the standard’s scope and whether exclusions or other applicable GAAP affect the analysis.

That distinction matters because it is easy to overread the standard in either direction. ASU 2023-08 does not establish that every stablecoin is an intangible asset, and it does not make every stablecoin a cash equivalent. If the asset is outside the standard’s scope, the company still has to identify and apply other relevant accounting guidance to its facts; exclusion from this standard is not a complete accounting answer.

Other potentially relevant accounting models

FASB’s materials on its current project explain that a holder’s accounting may depend on the token’s terms, conditions, and rights. Potentially relevant areas of U.S. GAAP include intangible-asset accounting, financial-asset accounting (such as a receivable, debt investment, or equity investment), derivative accounting, and cash-equivalent accounting. These are possibilities to assess, not a menu from which management can choose whichever presentation seems most convenient.

For example, the existence of an issuer or redemption promise may be relevant to whether the holder has a contractual claim, but the precise promise and any limits on it matter. A company should not conclude that a token is equivalent to cash simply because its stated target is one U.S. dollar. Nor should it assume that reserve assets backing the token are assets the holder owns directly. The relevant question is what rights the holder has under the actual token and redemption arrangement.

Cash-equivalent standard-setting is still evolving

FASB’s active project addresses whether certain digital assets may meet the definition of cash equivalents and how to improve transparency about significant classes of digital assets. In an update dated July 8, 2026, the Board decided to provide illustrative examples. That is project status, not a final accounting amendment or a universal conclusion that stablecoins qualify as cash equivalents. Companies making an accounting-policy decision should check for subsequent authoritative guidance and assess the rules effective for their reporting period.

The project reflects questions about both classification and transparency. For a company, the practical consequence is that a policy should explain the analysis rather than relying on the broad label “stablecoin.” Management should be prepared to support its conclusions about the rights conveyed, the purpose and expected use of the holding, and the presentation chosen under the applicable GAAP.

What IFRS guidance says—and what it does not settle

The IFRS Interpretations Committee’s June 2019 agenda decision addresses a defined cryptocurrency fact pattern. It considered digital or virtual currencies recorded on a distributed ledger, secured by cryptography, not issued by a jurisdictional authority or another party, and not giving rise to a contract between the holder and another party. For holdings matching that description, the Committee concluded that IAS 2 applies when the cryptocurrency is held for sale in the ordinary course of business; otherwise IAS 38 applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Committee’s analysis explains that the cryptocurrencies in that fact pattern are not cash or financial assets because they do not provide the relevant cash or contractual rights. The boundary is important for stablecoins: a fiat-redeemable token may involve a contractual redemption claim, which can make its facts different from the assets described in the agenda decision. The decision therefore should not be applied mechanically to every stablecoin. A company needs to analyze the particular rights and consider whether other IFRS requirements address its arrangement.

Holding purpose also matters within the IFRS analysis. The agenda decision distinguishes cryptocurrency held for sale in the ordinary course from other holdings. A company should document what it does with the asset and why, rather than treating all digital assets in its systems as a single accounting class.

Holder accounting is separate from issuer reporting

A company that holds or uses a stablecoin is not necessarily subject to the same accounting as the issuer that creates it or manages reserves for token holders. Issuer financial statements may describe reserve assets, customer obligations, redemption arrangements, and payments made by the issuer. Those disclosures can inform a holder’s understanding of the arrangement, but they do not dictate the holder’s own classification or measurement.

Circle Internet Group, Inc.’s 2025 annual report illustrates the distinction. Circle said that, when it makes operating payments using corporate-held stablecoins, it records an associated “Deposits from stablecoin holders” and records the cash associated with those stablecoins as “Cash and cash equivalents segregated for the benefit of stablecoin holders.” It also reported qualifying operating payments in its statement of cash flows in the same manner as if they had been settled in cash. This describes Circle’s accounting for its arrangement; it is not a general policy for companies holding stablecoins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Circle reported $75.1 billion in cash and cash equivalents segregated for stablecoin holders at December 31, 2025, compared with $43.9 billion at December 31, 2024. Those are issuer-side balances reported by Circle, not a measure of corporate adoption and not a balance-sheet benchmark for a corporate customer.

How U.S. issuer rules and SEC guidance fit in

U.S. statutory requirements for covered permitted payment stablecoin issuers address issuer reserves and disclosures. The U.S. Code requires covered issuers to maintain qualifying reserves at least 1:1, publish redemption-policy information, and publish monthly information about reserve composition and outstanding tokens. It also requires a GAAP-audited annual financial statement for a defined issuer subset: an issuer with more than $50 billion in consolidated outstanding issuance that is not already subject to specified Exchange Act reporting.

These are issuer requirements, not a rule assigning a corporate holder’s token to cash, a financial asset, or another accounting category. A holder can use issuer disclosures as evidence when assessing redemption terms, reserve information, or liquidity, but it still needs to analyze its own rights and accounting framework.

In a separate, narrower context, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance issued a staff statement on April 4, 2025, concerning a defined type of U.S.-dollar-denominated stablecoin that is redeemable one-for-one and backed by reserves. The statement describes a covered model in which reserve assets are segregated and unavailable for general business purposes. Its date, authoring division, and scope matter: it is not a universal statement about all tokens called stablecoins, nor does it resolve every corporate holder’s accounting question.

How stablecoins can affect the financial statements

The exact presentation follows the accounting conclusion for the asset and transaction. A company should trace the full life cycle of its use—from acquisition or receipt, through custody and any transfer or redemption, to the reporting-date balance—rather than making a decision only when a token first appears in a wallet.

  • Balance sheet: Determine the appropriate classification and whether the asset is subject to any relevant restrictions. A stablecoin held for the company’s own account is different from one held in custody for another party or subject to contractual limitations.
  • Measurement and earnings: Apply the measurement model required by the relevant guidance. Where fair-value accounting applies under ASU 2023-08, fair-value changes are recognized in net income; do not assume that this model applies to tokens outside the standard’s scope.
  • Income statement: Identify where gains, losses, transaction effects, or other relevant changes belong under the selected accounting model. Do not infer presentation solely from the token’s intended peg.
  • Cash-flow statement: Assess whether a particular transaction is a cash flow and how it should be classified under the applicable requirements. An issuer’s choice to report its own qualifying payments as if settled in cash does not automatically determine a customer’s cash-flow treatment.
  • Notes and disclosures: Consider whether users need information about significant holdings, the accounting policy and judgments, valuation inputs, restrictions, custody, or contractual sale limitations. FASB’s project materials specifically reflect stakeholder interest in transparency about significant classes of digital assets.

A stablecoin can be designed to trade near a reference value and still have liquidity or access risks. The holder’s ability to sell or redeem may depend on available channels, eligibility, timing, counterparties, and market conditions. For period-end reporting, management should support its valuation and cut-off with appropriate evidence rather than treating the peg or reserve claim as conclusive proof of realizable value.

A practical decision process for corporate finance and accounting teams

  1. Define the reporting perimeter. Identify the entity that owns or controls the token, the reporting framework (U.S. GAAP or IFRS), the reporting period, and whether the company is holding tokens for itself, holding them for customers, or acting in another capacity.
  2. Read the governing terms. Record who owes redemption, what currency or asset is deliverable, whether redemption is enforceable, and the applicable eligibility, timing, fee, suspension, or other limitations. Distinguish a direct contractual right from a general market expectation that a token will remain near its peg.
  3. Classify the business purpose. Document whether the token is used for operating payments, settlement float, treasury liquidity, investment, inventory held for sale, customer funds, or custody for another party. Explain how that purpose affects the applicable guidance and expected presentation.
  4. Assess scope and accounting guidance. Under U.S. GAAP, evaluate ASU 2023-08 scope and relevant alternative guidance, including the potentially applicable areas identified in FASB materials. Under IFRS, assess whether the 2019 agenda decision’s fact pattern fits or whether contractual rights make the case different. Record the basis for the policy conclusion.
  5. Establish control and custody evidence. Determine who controls the keys or account credentials, who can authorize transfers or redemption, whether custody is provided by a third party, and whether contractual or legal restrictions constrain access. Reconcile on-chain records and custodian statements to the company’s books.
  6. Set valuation and cut-off procedures. Identify the evidence used for reporting-date measurement, the relevant market or redemption channel, and how transactions close to period end are captured. Preserve transaction records, confirmations, fees, and evidence of any redemption or settlement.
  7. Decide presentation and disclosures. Document the balance-sheet classification, measurement, income-statement effects, cash-flow treatment, and note disclosures. Ensure that significant restrictions, judgments, and liquidity considerations are reflected where required and material.
  8. Revisit the analysis when facts change. Changes in redemption terms, issuer structure, custody, token functionality, the company’s use, or authoritative guidance may affect the accounting conclusion. Assign responsibility for monitoring relevant changes and retaining updated evidence.

What adoption figures can—and cannot—show

The Federal Reserve reported aggregate stablecoin market capitalization of $317 billion as of April 6, 2026. That is a market-size figure, not a count of businesses using stablecoins, the value companies hold, or evidence of how corporate balances are accounted for. Likewise, issuer reserve balances and payment activity do not establish how many companies have adopted stablecoins.

Accordingly, a company should not rely on a headline market figure to infer accounting practice, liquidity for its own token, or peer adoption. Adoption measurement and accounting classification answer different questions: one concerns use across a market, while the other concerns the rights, purpose, and reporting treatment of a particular entity’s position.
