6G does not have a finalized global spectrum assignment. As of 13 October 2026, the clearest candidate ranges are 4.4–4.8 GHz, 7.125–8.4 GHz (or portions of that range), and 14.8–15.35 GHz. They are being studied for possible terrestrial IMT use under WRC-27 agenda item 1.7, not awarded to 6G. Existing bands already identified for IMT are also expected to remain relevant to IMT-2030, the ITU name for the next generation of mobile systems.
The short answer: candidate bands are not 6G allocations
The phrase “6G spectrum” can describe several different regulatory and engineering steps, and those steps are often mistakenly treated as one decision. A frequency range can be studied, considered for sharing, identified for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), standardized for a radio interface, and eventually licensed by a national regulator. Each status means something different.

At the international level, the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) considers changes to the ITU Radio Regulations. Those regulations are the treaty framework that sets sharing conditions among radio services. National administrations then apply those rules in their own markets and decide whether, when, and under what conditions operators may use a band. A 6G radio standard can describe how equipment works, but it does not give a carrier a legal right to transmit.
The ITU’s Radio Regulations backgrounder calls the treaty “the foundation of international frequency management.” That foundation is why a possible 6G band must pass international compatibility studies and national regulatory decisions before it can support commercial networks.

Which frequency ranges are being considered?
WRC-27 agenda item 1.7 calls for sharing and compatibility studies and for technical conditions for possible additional terrestrial IMT use. The studies must account for services already operating in the candidate and adjacent bands.
| Frequency range | Current status | What that means for 6G |
|---|---|---|
| 4.4–4.8 GHz | Under study for possible terrestrial IMT use under WRC-27 agenda item 1.7 | A mid-band candidate; it is not a settled 6G allocation. |
| 7.125–8.4 GHz, or parts thereof | Under study for possible terrestrial IMT use | The wording matters: studies may cover only portions, not every megahertz across the entire range. |
| 14.8–15.35 GHz | Under study for possible terrestrial IMT use | A higher-frequency candidate whose sharing conditions and deployment implications remain unresolved. |
| Existing bands identified for IMT | Remain relevant to IMT-2030 according to ITU material | Future 6G networks can continue using earlier low-, mid- and high-band mobile spectrum alongside any new additions. |
These ranges are the most concrete candidates in the current global process, but none should be described as “the 6G band.” A WRC study item authorizes technical and regulatory work; it does not predetermine the conference decision. WRC-27 could establish conditions, limit a decision to parts of a range, attach regional provisions, or decline to make a new IMT identification if sharing cannot be protected.
Why the allocation question is really a coexistence question
Mobile operators want spectrum that can support large contiguous channels, predictable coverage and equipment economies of scale. Other radio services already use the candidate and neighboring frequencies. Satellite links, fixed links, earth stations, scientific systems and other services may have protection rights that limit power, antenna direction, geographic reach or indoor and outdoor operation. The studies therefore ask not only how much capacity a band could offer, but whether IMT can share it without harmful interference.
Compatibility work examines interference between IMT and incumbent services, including emissions outside the nominal channel. It can lead to conditions such as geographic exclusion zones, coordination procedures, power limits, antenna restrictions or different rules for uplink and downlink. The exact conditions are not fixed for the candidate ranges listed above.

International harmonization is another trade-off. A common range can support larger equipment volumes and easier roaming, while regional flexibility lets administrations protect local incumbents and address different demand patterns. The WRC process tries to balance those goals rather than simply selecting the highest-frequency or largest-looking block.
How 6G spectrum moves from an idea to a licensed network
There is no single “6G spectrum day.” The practical chain has several stages, and a decision at one stage does not substitute for the others.
- Technical and compatibility studies. ITU-R study groups, administrations and other stakeholders model propagation, interference and sharing options. For agenda item 1.7, those studies cover the candidate ranges and adjacent services.
- Government proposals and negotiation. National administrations bring proposals to a WRC. Delegations negotiate text, technical conditions and regional provisions. The conference can revise the Radio Regulations only through an agreed decision.
- International allocation or identification. If governments agree, the revised Radio Regulations can add or modify an allocation to a radio service, or identify a band for IMT under specified conditions. An IMT identification still does not require every country to use the band.
- National implementation. A country’s regulator updates its table of frequency allocations, consultation rules and technical licences. It may make the entire range available, only a portion, or none of it, depending on incumbent use and national policy.
- Operator authorization. Spectrum rights can be assigned through an auction, an administrative licence, a shared-access framework or another national mechanism. The government or regulator determines the licence area, duration, power, coordination obligations and permitted technology.
- Network deployment and coordination. Operators configure equipment to the national rules and coordinate where required. Cross-border agreements may be needed near national boundaries or for satellite and fixed links.
Consequently, “allocated to the mobile service,” “identified for IMT,” “standardized for a radio interface” and “licensed to a carrier” are not interchangeable descriptions. A range can reach one stage and remain unavailable to a particular operator at the next.

What existing mobile spectrum means for IMT-2030
IMT-2030 is the ITU’s formal name for the system commonly called 6G. ITU material explicitly says that bands already identified for IMT remain relevant to IMT-2030. That means the future spectrum mix is likely to combine continuity and additions rather than replace every earlier mobile band.

Lower-frequency holdings generally travel farther and penetrate buildings better, so they are useful for broad-area coverage when the rules and network design support it. Mid-band frequencies often offer a practical balance between coverage and capacity. Higher frequencies can provide wider channels but usually bring greater propagation loss and more demanding site engineering. These are engineering tendencies, not guarantees that any one candidate range will deliver a particular speed, latency or coverage footprint.
A 6G network could therefore use existing coverage layers while adding new capacity in a newly identified range. The exact combination will depend on national licences, equipment availability, channel sizes and the radio-interface technologies ultimately standardized.
How to compare the candidate ranges
Coverage versus capacity
Frequency alone does not determine user experience. Propagation, antenna configuration, transmit power, network density and channel width matter as well. A lower candidate range may be attractive for area coverage, while a higher range may offer more short-range capacity. Until technical conditions and deployment models are set, assigning guaranteed performance to 4.4–4.8 GHz, 7.125–8.4 GHz or 14.8–15.35 GHz would be premature.

Contiguous bandwidth and channelization
Advertised range width is not the same as a usable operator channel. Incumbent services, guard bands, regional splits and coordination limits can divide a candidate range. The phrase “7.125–8.4 GHz, or parts thereof” is a direct warning that only selected blocks might eventually be identified. Equipment makers also need channel plans that can be implemented consistently across markets.

Incumbent and adjacent-band protection
A band with substantial existing use may require stricter power, antenna or location rules than a relatively quiet band. Adjacent-band emissions can matter even when an IMT signal stays inside its assigned channel. The outcome of sharing studies will determine whether a candidate supports nationwide macro networks, localized systems, indoor use, or a combination.
Regional harmonization
The ITU divides the world into three regulatory regions, and a candidate need not have identical scope in all of them. A 2024 ITU seminar presentation showed 4.4–4.8 GHz in a proposal context for Regions 1 and 3 and included regional notes for portions of 7.125–8.4 GHz. That presentation reflects study scope and proposals at that time, not a final worldwide allocation. The official agenda’s “or parts thereof” language remains the safer description.
National availability and licensing
Even a globally harmonized identification does not compel a national regulator to clear incumbents immediately. Local allocation tables, defence or public-sector use, satellite coordination, border arrangements and the chosen licensing model determine when operators can actually obtain frequencies. Two countries can reach different deployment outcomes while both follow the Radio Regulations.

Where the 6G standards process stands in 2026
The ITU approved the IMT-2030 framework in 2023. In February 2026, ITU-R Working Party 5D completed draft minimum technical performance requirements. In June 2026, it completed draft guidelines for evaluating candidate radio-interface technologies. ITU said these drafts were submitted to Study Group 5 for approval in December 2026.
Best Value
Candidate radio-interface submissions are invited in the February 2027–February 2029 period. Those submissions will be evaluated against the IMT-2030 requirements and guidelines. The work covers technical capabilities and evaluation methods; it does not decide which countries will license a frequency range.
The framework describes intended scenarios including immersive communication, ubiquitous connectivity, artificial intelligence combined with communications, and integrated sensing and communication. These are design scenarios, not proof that a particular consumer service or performance level is already deployed. The ITU also cautions that draft minimum requirements are not guarantees of real-world results.
What WRC-27 could decide—and what it cannot decide alone
For the three candidate ranges, WRC-27 can consider the study results, negotiate sharing conditions and potentially revise the international rules. It cannot by itself issue a local licence to a named operator, clear every incumbent in every country, or select a final commercial radio interface. Those actions belong to national administrations and the separate standards process.

How to read future announcements without being misled
- “Under study” means technical and compatibility work is in progress.
- “WRC agenda item” identifies the conference workstream, not a completed allocation.
- “Allocated to the mobile service” describes a Radio Regulations category; it is not a carrier licence.
- “Identified for IMT” signals an international framework for IMT use under stated conditions, not mandatory national deployment.
- “Standardized” refers to radio-interface specifications, not ownership of frequencies.
- “Licensed” or “assigned” indicates a national regulator has granted usable rights with defined conditions.
The most reliable status check is to identify which of those words an announcement actually uses, then verify the relevant WRC text, national allocation table or licence decision. Until those documents exist, the 4.4–4.8 GHz, 7.125–8.4 GHz and 14.8–15.35 GHz ranges should be described as candidates under study, while existing IMT bands remain part of the potential IMT-2030 toolkit.
