What Spacecraft and Telescopes Can Reveal About Venus’s Atmosphere

Spacecraft and telescopes can map Venus’s cloud patterns, estimate winds, identify atmospheric chemicals and infer how temperature and pressure change with altitude. A descending probe can also sample the air directly. No single method does all of this: each sees a different wavelength, altitude range or slice of the planet.

Why Venus’s atmosphere must be studied in different ways

Venus is wrapped in a dense global cloud deck, so ordinary visible-light views show the clouds rather than the surface. The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, and the clouds are made of sulfuric acid. Surface pressure is about 93 times Earth’s sea-level pressure, according to NASA’s Venus facts page.

Researchers therefore combine remote sensing—measuring light or radio signals that have interacted with the atmosphere—with measurements made by instruments inside it. The result is a set of complementary clues, not one all-purpose portrait.

What spacecraft can measure

Cloud patterns and circulation

Japan’s Akatsuki orbiter observes Venus through cameras spanning ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths. Its images reveal cloud structures and allow scientists to track their movement. The ultraviolet imager also maps sulfur dioxide and unidentified ultraviolet absorbers; infrared observations can help investigate lower-atmosphere cloud motion and water-vapor distribution. These measurements depend on the instrument band: a feature prominent in ultraviolet need not look the same in infrared. See JAXA’s Akatsuki spacecraft and instruments overview and its science overview.

Following cloud features over time gives an estimate of the winds carrying them. This is a remote estimate based on motion in images, not a wind sensor sampling the air at every mapped location.

Temperature and pressure by altitude

Radio-science observations add a vertical dimension. As a spacecraft’s radio signal passes through or is occulted by the atmosphere, changes in the signal can be used to derive profiles of temperature and pressure. Unlike a flat cloud image, these results constrain how conditions vary with altitude. Akatsuki’s ultra-stable oscillator supports this kind of investigation; radio-science measurements were also part of Venus Express, which orbited Venus until 2014 and complemented Akatsuki’s work, as described by JAXA.

Direct measurements during a descent

A probe descending through the atmosphere can measure local conditions along its path rather than infer everything from a distance. NASA’s planned DAVINCI mission combines flyby imaging with a probe designed to measure atmospheric chemistry, temperature, pressure and winds during descent. These are planned capabilities, not completed measurements or returned findings. Details are on NASA’s DAVINCI mission page and in NASA’s description of its temperature, pressure and wind instrument.

A descent produces a vertically sampled record at the probe’s location. It cannot, by itself, provide the global coverage of repeated orbital observations.

What telescopes can reveal from afar

Ultraviolet images trace cloud features

Venus’s cloud tops show distinctive patterns in ultraviolet images. NASA’s Hubble archive image and description illustrate how a cloud-covered planet can still reveal atmospheric structure. The patterns act as tracers: comparing their positions over time helps estimate winds. They are not views through the clouds to the ground.

Infrared spectra reveal emissions and chemical signatures

Infrared observations can detect thermal emission and wavelength-specific signatures associated with atmospheric constituents. NASA’s airborne SOFIA observatory observed Venus’s atmospheric composition in infrared. Flying above most of Earth’s infrared-blocking atmosphere made observations possible in bands that ground observatories cannot readily access, as described in NASA’s SOFIA account.

High-resolution infrared spectroscopy can separate narrow molecular emission features. NASA Goddard’s HIPWAC instrument uses infrared heterodyne spectroscopy at observatories including NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility and Subaru on Mauna Kea. The technique has been used to investigate planetary winds and composition, including on Venus; instrument details are available from NASA Goddard.

A transit offers a special view at the planet’s edge

When Venus crosses the face of the Sun, its atmosphere is seen at the planet’s limb against the solar background. During the 2012 transit, researchers analyzed X-ray and ultraviolet images from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory to measure how the atmosphere absorbed different wavelengths. This geometry is unusual: it is available during a transit, not during routine observations. NASA describes the work in its account of studying Venus’s atmosphere through transit images.

How to interpret an observation

When comparing results, ask what signal was measured, which altitudes it can probe, how much of Venus it covers and whether the instrument observed remotely or sampled the air directly.

Method What it measures or reveals Coverage and key limit
Ultraviolet imaging Cloud patterns, sulfur dioxide distribution and unidentified ultraviolet absorbers, depending on the instrument Maps visible cloud features; does not show the surface through the global clouds
Infrared imaging and spectroscopy Thermal emission, wavelength-specific signatures, and some cloud-motion or water-vapor clues Altitude sensitivity depends on wavelength and observing conditions
Cloud tracking Wind estimates from the movement of atmospheric features over time Tracks selected visible features; it is not direct sampling of air everywhere
Radio occultation and radio science Vertical constraints on temperature and pressure Samples atmospheric structure along a signal path rather than making a global image
Descent probe Direct measurements such as chemistry, temperature, pressure and wind Measures locally along a descent track; DAVINCI’s listed measurements are planned
Transit imaging Wavelength-dependent absorption at the atmospheric limb Requires the special geometry of Venus crossing the Sun

Can a telescope see through Venus’s clouds?

Not in ordinary visible light: the global cloud deck blocks a clear view of the surface. Telescopes can still study the atmosphere because ultraviolet and infrared light reveal cloud features or spectral signatures that visible images do not. Radio measurements and spacecraft instruments add other kinds of information, while a probe can directly sample air as it descends.
