An AI accelerator works only when the entire configuration is supported: the exact accelerator model, host system, operating system and kernel, driver, firmware, toolkit or runtime, framework, and application. A card that fits a PCIe slot can still fail because its architecture, driver branch, or framework version is unsupported.
Before buying or installing one, record the intended workload and verify every layer against the vendor’s current, model-specific documentation. Then check the board’s dimensions, slot clearance, power connectors, PSU capacity, and cooling in the exact chassis. Treat software support and physical fit as separate decisions that must both pass.

Compatibility is a complete configuration, not a connector
“Compatible” has several meanings. Mechanical compatibility means the board can be installed. Electrical compatibility means the system can deliver the required power safely. Platform compatibility means the motherboard, firmware, and expansion slots can initialize it. Software compatibility means the operating system, kernel, driver, firmware, runtime, libraries, framework, and application all support that specific device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese conditions are independent. A PCIe connector establishes only that the card can plug into a slot; it does not prove that the operating system will load a driver or that an AI framework can execute kernels on the device. A vendor listing for a related graphics model may also omit support for the compute workload you intend to run.

| Layer to verify | What to match | Typical failure when it is ignored |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerator identity | Exact make, model, architecture, memory configuration, and form factor | A similar model is supported, but the purchased model is not |
| Workload | Training, inference, video, scientific computing, or the named application | Graphics support is mistaken for AI-compute support |
| Operating system and kernel | Distribution and release, kernel version, Windows, Linux, or WSL status | Driver installation succeeds only on a different release |
| Driver and firmware | Driver branch and firmware versions approved for the device and runtime | The device appears in the system but frameworks cannot use it |
| Toolkit or runtime | CUDA, ROCm, oneAPI, or another vendor runtime and its supported release | Libraries reject the driver or cannot find a compatible device |
| Framework and application | Framework version, plug-ins, libraries, and the built application’s requirements | Only some operators run, or the application falls back to the CPU |
| Host hardware | Slot type and spacing, dimensions, PSU, connectors, firmware, and cooling | The board cannot be installed, powered, or kept within safe temperatures |
| Deployment mode | Bare metal, multi-device, passthrough, or virtual machine support | A configuration that works on one device fails when shared or virtualized |
Step 1: Name the exact accelerator and workload
Record the complete device identity
Write down the manufacturer, exact model number, architecture or device family, memory capacity, board form factor, and whether it is an add-in card, integrated device, module, or another design. “A 16 GB accelerator” is not precise enough: two boards with the same memory size can have different instruction support, drivers, dimensions, power requirements, and framework coverage.
Describe what the machine must do
State the actual application and workload before checking compatibility. Distinguish model training from inference, and name the framework and version if known. Include any required libraries, plug-ins, containers, or vendor extensions. A vendor’s support for display output or graphics APIs does not automatically cover machine-learning kernels; AMD’s compatibility guidance explicitly separates compute support from graphics use cases.
Step 2: Read the vendor support matrix for the exact release
Use model-specific rows, not brand-level assurances
Open the support matrix for the accelerator family and software release you plan to deploy. Confirm that the exact device or architecture appears, rather than assuming that every product in a brand’s range is covered. Record the matrix’s publication or revision date and repeat the check whenever you change the operating system, kernel, driver, toolkit, or framework.

AMD’s ROCm 7.14.1 matrix, dated September 2, 2026, is organized by device family and identifies supported operating systems, kernels, drivers, AI frameworks, and ecosystem components. Its documentation states: “ROCm depends on a coordinated stack of compatible firmware, driver, and user space components.” That coordination is why installing an apparently newer individual component can make a previously working stack unsupported.

Check the operating-system column carefully
Look for the exact distribution and release, kernel range, and deployment type. Verify whether the matrix lists Windows, native Linux, or Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) for the device family. “Linux supported” without a distribution and kernel qualification is not a complete answer. A system image that is outside the listed range may boot and even detect the card, while still lacking a supported compute path.
Check framework and ecosystem entries
Support for a runtime does not guarantee support for every framework release or operator. Match the framework version, acceleration plug-in, numerical libraries, and any container image to the matrix. Check whether the application vendor has its own device list; an application can lag behind the underlying runtime and exclude a newly supported accelerator.
Step 3: Align driver, firmware, toolkit, and application versions
Treat the stack as a versioned chain
Write the versions in one place: operating system, kernel, accelerator firmware, kernel or display driver, toolkit/runtime, framework, libraries, and application. The driver must be supported by the toolkit, and the toolkit must support the accelerator architecture. The application must in turn be built for that toolkit or for a compatible runtime interface.

AMD describes ROCm as a coordinated firmware, driver, and user-space stack. Intel’s oneAPI 2026.1 documentation lists GPU classes, operating-system versions, and driver requirements by release and notes that its tools are optimized and validated on Intel platforms. Those statements are release-specific; they are not guarantees for every operating system or third-party platform.

Account for built applications and containers
If you received a prebuilt application, container, or binary, check the toolkit version used to build it, not only the version you intend to install. NVIDIA’s AI Enterprise release documentation states that a CUDA application requires a CUDA-enabled GPU and a display driver compatible with the CUDA Toolkit used to build the application. Confirm the current CUDA documentation for the particular release before deployment, because driver and toolkit requirements change between releases.
Plan upgrades instead of mixing components
Choose a supported combination first, then pin or document those versions. Do not update the driver, firmware, or toolkit independently on a production machine without checking the matrix again. Keep a rollback image or documented previous versions so a failed upgrade can be reversed.
Step 4: Verify the host platform and operating system
Motherboard and firmware
Confirm that the motherboard or server lists the accelerator class, required PCI Express generation and lane arrangement, and any firmware settings needed to initialize a large add-in device. Check the system vendor’s support list as well as the accelerator vendor’s documentation. A workstation support list can be narrower than the electrical capabilities of its slot.

Decide whether the accelerator will run on native Windows, native Linux, WSL, or another supported environment. Use the same environment in which the application will run; installing a Linux driver on the host does not by itself provide support inside a virtual machine or WSL instance. Confirm that the kernel package, secure-boot policy, and update process are compatible with the selected driver, where the vendor documents those conditions.

Single-device versus special deployment
Bare-metal support for one accelerator does not establish support for several devices, PCIe peer-to-peer transfers, passthrough, or virtual machines. For those deployments, consult the vendor’s system and virtualization documentation and verify the hypervisor, guest operating system, reset behavior, and device-assignment model for the exact hardware.
Step 5: Check physical fit, power, and cooling
Use the exact board and chassis manuals; software matrices generally do not provide universal chassis, PSU, or cooling values. Measure the installed system rather than relying on the nominal size of the expansion slot.
| Physical check | Questions to answer before purchase |
|---|---|
| Dimensions and clearance | What are the board’s length, height, and thickness? Will drive cages, side panels, or radiator hardware interfere? |
| Slot placement | Is the required slot electrically suitable, and are adjacent slots blocked by the cooler? |
| Power connectors | Which connector type and number does the exact board require, and can the PSU provide dedicated leads? |
| PSU capacity | Does the system’s rated capacity cover the accelerator and the rest of the machine under sustained load? |
| Airflow and cooling | Can the chassis supply the intake, exhaust, and ambient-temperature conditions specified for the board? |
| Service access | Can the card be installed, latched, and removed without stressing cables or neighboring components? |
Do not infer any of these values from a different board in the same product family. A higher-power variant may require additional connectors, occupy more slots, or need a different airflow path. If a manual does not state a value, treat it as “not stated” and obtain the exact specification from the system or board manufacturer before ordering.
How to compare two candidate accelerators
Compare complete supported configurations, not headline performance or brand reputation. Build a side-by-side record using the same workload and deployment assumptions.
Best Value
| Comparison axis | Evidence to record | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Workload and framework | Named application, framework version, supported operators, and acceleration plug-ins | Can the software perform the required job on this device? |
| Device/OS/kernel support | Exact model row, supported OS releases, kernel range, and deployment type | Is the planned host configuration listed? |
| Driver and toolkit lifecycle | Supported driver branches, runtime versions, release dates, and upgrade policy | Can you keep the stack supported over the system’s useful life? |
| Memory and performance specifications | Capacity, bandwidth, precision support, and workload-relevant performance published for each exact model | Does it meet the application’s memory and throughput needs? |
| Host requirements | Dimensions, occupied slots, connectors, PSU requirements, and cooling conditions | Will the existing chassis run it safely? |
| Operations | Monitoring, reset behavior, multi-device support, virtualization, and service procedures | Can your team deploy and maintain it reliably? |
If a candidate lacks a published entry for your OS, framework, or application, mark that item as unsupported or unverified rather than substituting a similar model. The sources establish that support differs by device family and software release; they do not establish a universally superior ecosystem.
Pre-install verification procedure
- Freeze the target configuration. Record the exact accelerator, host model, operating system and kernel, workload, framework, and intended deployment mode.
- Collect current vendor documents. Use the accelerator support matrix, toolkit release notes, firmware and driver documentation, and the host system manual. Note each document’s version date.
- Mark every support intersection. Confirm the device, OS/kernel, driver, firmware, runtime, framework, and application as one supported chain. Any blank or conditional entry requires resolution before purchase.
- Inspect the physical system. Measure clearance, identify the electrically appropriate slot, count neighboring-slot obstructions, and verify connector routing, PSU capacity, and airflow.
- Validate special modes. If using multiple accelerators, passthrough, or virtual machines, check the dedicated deployment documentation rather than extending bare-metal assumptions.
- Install in a controlled state. Apply the documented firmware and driver order, keep the approved toolkit and framework versions, and avoid unrelated system upgrades during the first validation.
- Run an application-level test. Confirm that the intended framework selects the accelerator, loads its libraries, and executes a representative workload without CPU fallback or unsupported-operator errors.
- Document the working set. Save versions, configuration settings, test results, and recovery steps so future updates can be compared against the known-good combination.
Common compatibility failures and what they mean
The system does not detect the card
Start with physical causes: an incompletely seated board, wrong slot, missing power lead, blocked airflow, or insufficient PSU. Then check motherboard firmware and the operating system’s supported driver. Detection failure is not evidence that the framework is at fault.
The driver loads but the framework cannot use the device
Compare the framework and toolkit versions with the support matrix. A driver can enumerate hardware while the installed runtime lacks support for that architecture. Check for a mismatched container or prebuilt binary and verify that the application was built against a compatible toolkit.
Recommended Free Tools
The application runs on the CPU
Confirm that the application recognizes the exact device and that its acceleration plug-in is installed. Check whether the workload uses operators or precisions unavailable on that accelerator. A successful launch with CPU fallback is not equivalent to accelerator support.
An update breaks a previously working installation
Identify which component changed, then compare the new combination with the matrix. Restore the documented driver, runtime, or framework version if necessary. Keep version records and a rollback path; coordinated stacks can fail when one component is upgraded alone.
Several devices or a virtual machine fails while one device works
Treat this as a different deployment. Verify multi-device topology, reset and peer-access behavior, hypervisor support, guest drivers, and resource assignment in the vendor’s system documentation. Single-device bare-metal support does not cover these modes.
When to recheck compatibility
Recheck before purchase, before the first installation, after an operating-system or kernel upgrade, when changing driver or firmware branches, when moving to a new framework or container, and before adding a second device or virtualization. Vendor matrices are versioned and change by release, so a check that was correct for one toolkit may not remain correct for the next.
