What Social Media Platforms Can See About Your Activity—and How They Use It

Social media platforms can learn more than what you post. Depending on the service, your settings, and your device permissions, they may record what you watch or click, how you interact, technical and location signals, and information shared by other people or business partners. They use these signals to rank and recommend content, personalize ads, infer interests or characteristics, and run or protect their services. The details vary by platform, region, account, and feature.

What counts as your activity?

Your public posts are only one part of the picture. Platforms may record content you view or engage with, features you use, actions you take, accounts you interact with, and the timing, frequency, or duration of your use. Meta describes these categories in its United States Regional Privacy Notice; TikTok likewise describes interactions with content and ads, service-use duration and frequency, and engagement with other users in its US Privacy Policy.

Depending on the service and feature, activity can also include searches, link interactions, and signals about the device or browser you use. These records can help a platform understand what you do within its services, even when you do not publish a post or comment.

What can individual platforms see?

Meta: Facebook, Instagram, and related products

Meta says it collects information about how people use its products: content viewed or engaged with, features used, actions taken, people or accounts interacted with, and when and how often activity occurs. It also says it may receive information about a person that other people provide—for example, through shared content, communications, or imported contact information. These descriptions are from Meta’s US notice; policies and controls can differ by region and product.

Meta’s June 2026 announcement describes an Accounts Center control called “Activity from other businesses,” formerly “Activity information from ad partners.” Meta said the control manages use of this shared activity data for personalization of content and ads, and that it would stop offering a separate “Your activity off Meta technologies” setting. The live label and availability may vary, so check the current Accounts Center interface rather than relying on an older menu path. Meta’s US notice and the control information linked from it explain the service’s stated scope.

TikTok

TikTok’s US policy describes interactions with content and ads, how long and how often someone uses the service, and engagement with other users. Some information depends on a feature or permission: for example, contacts when a user chooses to sync them, purchase or transaction information when shopping or payment features are used, and possible precise location data depending on settings. The policy also says TikTok may infer attributes such as age, gender, and interests and use information for recommendations, safety, and personalization. These practices should not be assumed to apply identically to every account or device; see TikTok’s US Privacy Policy.

X

X describes information people provide, information generated through use of its service, and additional signals such as location, link interactions, cookie and log data, and information from advertisers or ad partners. Its documentation says partner signals can include cookie or device identifiers, hashed user information, demographic or interest data, and actions on partner websites or apps. X also describes inferred topics of interest, age, and language, which it says can inform personalized content and advertising. Its data-processing information and Privacy Policy describe these categories.

Google and YouTube

Google says activity in its services can inform features such as YouTube recommendations. Searches and other activity may be saved to a Google Account depending on the account’s settings. Google also says location can support location-based services, with the types of location data collected and how long it is retained depending in part on device and account settings. Its Privacy Policy and Safety Center page, Ads that Respect Your Privacy, describe how activity and associated information can support personalization and ads.

Can social media apps track you outside the app?

Sometimes a platform can receive signals from outside its own service, but the sources and circumstances differ. X describes receiving information from advertisers and ad partners, including identifiers and actions on partner websites or apps. Meta says it may receive activity information from ad partners and information other people provide. These are platform-specific disclosures, not proof that every service collects the same information about every user.

Other outside signals may come from people you know. Meta, for example, says information about you can be provided by others through shared content, communications, or imported contacts. On TikTok, contact information is relevant when a user chooses to sync contacts. What a platform can connect to your account may depend on the feature used, account settings, and permissions.

How platforms use activity and what they infer

Ranking and recommendations

Platforms use signals about what people watch, search for, or engage with to select and order content. Google says activity can inform YouTube recommendations. TikTok says it uses information for recommendations, and Meta describes collecting interactions and feature use across its products. A recommendation is a platform’s selection based on its systems, not a definitive statement about a person.

Personalized advertising

Activity and other signals may be used to tailor advertising. Google’s Safety Center describes sites visited, apps used, searches, and associated information such as location as inputs to service personalization and ads. X says inferred topics and characteristics can support personalized advertising. Meta identifies controls for use of activity information from ad partners in personalized content and ads.

Inferences about you

A platform may estimate interests or characteristics from activity and other signals. X gives examples including likely topics of interest, age, and language; TikTok describes possible inferences such as age, gender, and interests. These are platform-drawn estimates, not verified facts about you, and they can be wrong. Their existence does not mean a platform has confirmed a characteristic or uses it in every decision.

Operating and protecting the service

Platforms also describe using information to operate their services and support safety. TikTok, for example, says information can be used for safety as well as recommendations and personalization. Turning off an advertising or history control should not be taken to mean that all service logging or safety-related processing stops.

How to limit personalized ads and review what is saved

There is no single setting that governs every platform, device, and use of data. Review account controls and device permissions separately, and read each control’s stated scope before relying on it.

  1. Review ad and privacy settings in each service. Look for the platform’s current privacy, ad-preference, or activity controls. Labels and menus can change, and availability may depend on region or product.
  2. For Google, check My Ad Center and account activity controls. Google says My Ad Center can customize ads or turn off ad personalization, and that users can delete activity data tied to an account. These choices address the uses Google describes; they do not promise to stop all data collection or service processing. Google’s Ads that Respect Your Privacy page explains these controls.
  3. For Meta, look for “Activity from other businesses” in Accounts Center. Meta’s June 2026 announcement says this control covers use of shared activity data for personalized content and ads. Check the current interface and regional availability; the earlier “Your activity off Meta technologies” setting is not described as a separate control going forward.
  4. Review device permissions. Check location and contacts permissions in your phone or operating system as well as in-app settings. A permission can affect whether a particular signal is available to a feature, but it does not cover every category of platform data.
  5. Check account activity and connected features periodically. Review saved activity, synced contacts, shopping or payment features, and any linked services you have enabled. Remove or disable items you no longer want connected, where the platform offers that option.

What changing a setting does—and does not do

Controls can change whether activity is saved to an account, whether shared signals are used for personalization, or which ads and content are tailored. They do not necessarily stop all service logging, safety processing, information supplied by other people, or data handled under other settings. The practical question is what a particular control says it changes, for which account and region, rather than whether a platform “tracks you” in a single all-or-nothing sense.
