Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →SMART is an early-warning system, not a countdown clock. A drive’s SMART status and attributes can reveal that its internal measurements have crossed vendor-defined limits, but they cannot tell you the exact day the drive will fail or prove that a drive showing “Pass” will remain healthy. Treat a manufacturer-reported SMART FAIL as an urgent data-preservation event: back up important files first, then use the drive maker’s diagnostic guidance.
What is SMART data?
SMART stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology. The firmware in a hard disk drive or solid-state drive records internal attributes and compares relevant measurements with thresholds. When a monitored condition crosses a threshold, the drive can change its overall health state from Pass to Fail.

The information comes from the drive itself. An operating-system utility or monitoring application may display the values, but the drive vendor defines how each attribute is encoded, scaled and evaluated. That is why the same attribute number, raw value or percentage shown for two different models may not represent the same physical condition.
SMART is most useful as a warning and monitoring layer. It can tell you that a drive has reported a condition associated with elevated failure concern, or that a vendor-defined limit has been exceeded. It cannot establish a reliable remaining-life estimate for one particular drive.

What does SMART data tell you about a hard drive?
It reports the drive’s own health signals
SMART attributes are measurements or counters maintained by the drive. The overall status is a summary generated from rules and thresholds supplied by the manufacturer. A threshold crossing is therefore more meaningful than a color, score or interpretation invented by a third-party dashboard.
It can identify a serious warning before total loss
A failing attribute may appear while the drive still reads and writes normally. Seagate Support describes this situation directly: “SMART Status FAIL is a near-term prediction of drive failure and the drive usually functions like normal.” Normal operation after the warning should not be mistaken for recovery; it means you may still have a window to copy data.
It provides context for a vendor diagnostic
SMART output helps support staff and diagnostic utilities determine which drive deserves attention. For Seagate hardware, the company says its SeaTools utility is the standard it uses to determine drive failure and recommends it for physical-integrity testing. That is Seagate-specific guidance, not a universal rule that every manufacturer’s product must be tested with the same program.
What SMART cannot tell you
It cannot give an exact failure date
A FAIL state indicates an elevated and potentially near-term risk, but it does not provide a countdown. Seagate Support says: “Unfortunately, there is no way to specifically predict when the failure will occur, so your best response is to back up your data as soon as possible.” A drive might continue working for a short period, or it might become unreadable during the next power cycle.

A PASS state is not a guarantee
SMART only sees the conditions that the drive measures and reports. A drive can suffer an electronic, mechanical, firmware or connection problem that is not represented by a currently failed attribute. “All green” means that the reported thresholds have not been crossed; it does not certify future reliability.
Raw values do not have one universal meaning
Manufacturers can encode and interpret individual attributes differently. A raw number displayed by a generic monitor may be vendor-specific, transformed, or difficult to interpret without the model’s documentation. Do not compare a raw value from one drive brand or model with the same number from another and assume the risk is equivalent.
It cannot calculate your personal probability from fleet statistics
Large data-center studies can show associations between SMART measurements and later failures. Those associations describe a population operating under particular workloads, ages, environments and replacement practices. They do not become a dependable failure probability for your own desktop, laptop or external enclosure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat does a SMART status FAIL mean?
An overall SMART FAIL means the drive has reported that one or more monitored conditions crossed a manufacturer-defined threshold. It is a high-priority warning even if files are still accessible. The correct sequence is preservation first, diagnosis second.

- Stop nonessential work on the drive. Avoid downloads, system updates, disk cleaning and experiments that create additional writes.
- Back up important data immediately. Copy irreplaceable files to a separate destination before running tests or attempting repairs.
- Record the exact model and the displayed status. Save a screenshot or text report, including the attribute name and raw value if the tool provides them.
- Use the manufacturer’s current support instructions. Select the diagnostic utility intended for that drive family and follow its explanation of pass, fail and warranty outcomes.
- Plan replacement or warranty service. A diagnostic result can support a return or replacement decision, but it does not make the existing copy of your data safe.
Long or destructive diagnostics should wait until the data has another verified copy. A test can confirm physical integrity; it cannot substitute for a backup.
Can SMART predict hard drive failure?
SMART can contribute to a risk signal, but evidence does not support using SMART parameters alone as a precise individual-drive predictor.
What the Google fleet study found
In a 2007 study, Google researchers Eduardo Pinheiro, Wolf-Dietrich Weber and Luiz André Barroso found several SMART parameters highly correlated with failures in a large fleet. They also reported that temperature and activity level were less correlated with failures than earlier reports had suggested. Their central qualification is essential: “Despite this high correlation, we conclude that models based on SMART parameters alone are unlikely to be useful for predicting individual drive failures.”
What Backblaze’s data show
Backblaze’s SMART data page, updated 10 May 2023, presents raw correlations between selected attributes and failures using Smartmontools data from a data-center fleet. Attribute numbering and reporting depend on drive model, so the page is useful for understanding fleet-level patterns rather than forecasting a consumer drive.

Backblaze’s Q2 2026 report covers more than 350,000 production drives and reports a 1.73% quarterly annualized failure rate for that fleet. The figure is affected by model mix, drive age, screening, operating environment and operational replacement practices. It is not the chance that an individual reader’s drive will fail in the next quarter.
How to interpret the main diagnostic approaches
| Approach | What it is good for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Overall manufacturer SMART status | Identifying that the drive has crossed a vendor-defined failure threshold | Signals serious risk but supplies no exact failure time |
| Third-party raw-attribute display | Showing counters and measurements for monitoring or troubleshooting | Interpretation can be inconsistent because vendors encode attributes differently |
| Drive-maker diagnostic utility | Testing the physical integrity of the manufacturer’s drive and documenting a support or warranty result | Instructions and meaning are manufacturer-specific |
| Fleet-level correlation study | Revealing patterns associated with failures across many drives | Does not produce a reliable prediction for one person’s drive |
Should you replace a hard drive with a SMART warning?
For a drive containing data you cannot easily recreate, a SMART FAIL should lead to replacement planning after the backup is secured. Do not wait for audible noises, repeated crashes or complete inaccessibility to begin copying files.
A warning that has not reached an overall FAIL still deserves investigation. Check the model-specific documentation, look for a vendor diagnostic result, and consider the drive’s role. A noncritical scratch disk may be taken offline after its contents are discarded; a boot or archive disk should be replaced once its data is safely migrated.
Warranty status, the diagnostic result and the drive’s symptoms determine the practical route. Keep the original drive untouched until the replacement copy has been opened and checked. If the drive is unstable, prioritize the most valuable files and use a professional recovery service only when the data’s value justifies that cost; SMART itself does not establish recoverability.

How to back up when SMART raises an alert
Use a separate destination with enough capacity for the files that matter. A capacity-appropriate external USB hard drive can serve as a local backup target, while a cloud backup service is another category of destination. One local copy is not a complete backup strategy because theft, fire, malware or a failed enclosure can destroy both the original and the copy.
- Connect the destination and confirm that it is recognized before starting a large transfer.
- Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, project files and exported databases first.
- Open a sample of copied files from the destination to verify that the transfer produced usable data.
- Only after verification, continue with less important data and then run the vendor diagnostic if needed.
Why fleet statistics need careful wording
A fleet failure rate combines thousands of drives that differ in age, model, workload, screening and operating conditions. Backblaze’s 1.73% quarterly annualized Q2 2026 result is valuable for understanding how a managed production fleet performed during that period. It cannot be converted into “your drive has a 1.73% chance of failing,” because your drive is not sampled under the same conditions or replacement policy.
The same caution applies to correlations between an attribute and failure. Correlation can help identify useful warning signals at scale while still being too noisy for an exact individual prediction.

Quick Recap
Common SMART mistakes and the safer alternative
- Mistake: waiting for a precise countdown. There is no reliable date calculation. Safer alternative: treat a serious warning as a backup deadline.
- Mistake: assuming a normal-looking drive is safe. A PASS status covers only reported and thresholded conditions. Safer alternative: maintain independent backups and monitor symptoms.
- Mistake: decoding every raw number with a generic chart. Attribute meanings vary by model and vendor. Safer alternative: consult the manufacturer’s documentation and diagnostic tool.
- Mistake: testing before copying data. Extended tests can add activity to an unstable drive. Safer alternative: preserve data first, then test.
- Mistake: treating a fleet rate as personal risk. Population statistics include conditions unlike yours. Safer alternative: use them for context, not a personal forecast.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the overall status FAIL? Begin an immediate backup and replacement plan.
- Is only a raw attribute changing? Identify the exact model and obtain the vendor’s interpretation before drawing a conclusion.
- Has the backup been verified by opening copied files? If not, postpone nonessential diagnostics.
- Does the manufacturer’s test report a failure? Save the report for support or warranty service and retire the drive after migration.
- Does the drive pass the test but show recurring errors or instability? Keep independent backups and investigate the surrounding system, cable, enclosure and workload rather than assuming the drive is guaranteed healthy.
